Conan O'Brien’s 2011 Dartmouth College commencement speech was an inspirational but at the same time a comedic presentation. He uses jokes to get his point across and motivate the future graduates. The linguistics that he uses are different from any other speaker at a graduation speech, however he has his own method of delivering his message. Conan O’Brien’s seems very comfortable conveying his commencement speech ,with great posture and eye contact, mostly since he is a talk show host and has experience talking in public. Overall, his speech was unorthodox, however the graduating class and the public enjoyed it and there was a lesson behind his speech. Throughout his speech Conan O’Brien uses a lot of offensive words, however the audience did not seem to take much offense to what he said since he was a comedian and got away with it. Some of the offensive things he said was “Many old people attend this graduation ceremonies because they have nothing else to do”, also “That only people that are rich get more benefits like if it rain only they will get a tent because of their …show more content…
Some examples of this was calling the president of the university “Special-K” or “Stinky Pete” just to name a few. Nick names like these ones are just like the ones college students will use to give their friends. Conan O’Brien is just trying to relate or imitate how the college students by act and talk. Other familiar words and topics that he mention was Twilight, which is a movie that came out around 2011, and also he stated how he wrote the commencement speech the night before, like student writes their paper the day before it is dues. In addition, Conan uses acronyms so that only the young graduates can understand like “FSP”. His usage of these type of linguistics helps him connect with the audience and allows them to understand what he is trying to
Steve Jobs effectively uses pathos throughout the speech to appeal emotions of his audience, effectively connecting with audience. Jobs starts off his speech by using pathos saying “I'm honored to be with you today for your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. Truth be told, I never graduated from college, and this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation” (Jobs). From these first two
The rhetorical essay has been a tradition in public speaking since Ancient Greece. Meant to persuade an audience to believe an idea or to embrace a way of thinking, public speakers have utilized this technique for centuries to inspire change in those who listen to it. Carrie Chapman Catt's commencement speech to the 1936 graduating class at Sweet Briar College is a speech that exemplifies the key devices and methods of persuasion in rhetoric, as well as inspiring her audience, a girls-only institution of higher learning, to work hard not only to improve their own lives, but to create a world greater than their own for generations to come. Carrie Chapman Catt delivered a highly effective commencement speech using the rhetorical devices logos,
Graduation caps fly into the air, cheers erupt, and diplomas are received. This is a typical graduation day. Not only did these ceremonial events take place for Tulane University's class of 2009, but Ellen DeGeneres was there to congratulate them as well! This class was dubbed the "Katrina Class" for being survivors of the devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Katrina was named one of the deadliest Hurricanes, causing more than 1,836 deaths. Tulane University is located in New Orleans, Louisiana, where the most significant amount of deaths took place and 80 percent of the city was destroyed. These graduates have survived a lot , and Ellen wants to congratulate them on their
Steve Jobs, a businessman in Silicon Valley, gave the Stanford Commencement Address in 2005. Rhetorical tools are used to persuade the audience. Ethos deals with the speaker's credibility, Pathos appeals to emotion and Logos appeals to logic. Steve Jobs’ successfully used the rhetorical tools Ethos, Pathos, and Logos throughout his speech.
In David Foster Wallace’s Commencement Speech, he opens with a short parable about how a fish greets two other fishes and ask them how’s the water today, this parable introduces us to his message which is changing that default setting which is hard-wired into our brains to have a life worth living. I agree with his statement because this is’nt just the first time this formula has been brought to our attention. Many success people have said this statement in some form or fashion, we can even look at David Sedaris’s commencement speech.
One of the finest commencement speeches was given by David Foster Wallace at Kenyon College. Wallace’s speech can be viewed as enlightening to those who are often blindly single-minded. It forces the audience to take a look at the way they approach everyday situations, rather than being self-centered, consider others before yourself. However, many overlook Wallace’s impeccable rhetorical maneuvers, focusing on the constant clichés and fictional anecdotes used. What people don’t realize is these clichés and fictional anecdotes are what make Wallace’s speech effective and reinforce the basic principles we were taught as a child, to share and think of others before ourselves. Overlooking Wallace’s flawless technique is doing a disservice to
Good evening Yucaipa high school graduates, friends, family, staff, school board members, and administration. I'm honored to be the class speaker of the Yucaipa high school graduating class of 2017! Tonight I will be sharing different events from my life that have impacted me the most and that inspire me, as I hope they will inspire you. Although before I start I want to give a huge shout out to my best friend/sister Haley Hillrich because without her I don’t think I would be up here tonight. Now lets get started so we can officially graduate.
Colin Powell had some funny parts in his speech to keep the audience awoke. He made jokes on mostly everything he said. A joke was made about every five minutes. The joke he made was when he said that he wouldn't go to long. All of the graduates of Howard just laughed. I think jokes are an essential part of your speech. If you don't have jokes than your speech will always be on the boring side. I think a joke should be made about two to three minutes of every speech that you make to the public. President Clinton's State of the Union even have jokes in it. I hate it when a public speaker make a speech that last about an hour an never have a single joke. I not saying to try to be a funnyman but just let some semi-funny jokes come at your mouth. Colin Powell didn't have any hilarious jokes but it was enough to grab the audience attention. I remember at my high school graduation when the valor victorian made her speech. I t was the most boring speech in George Washington High School history. She didn't even mention a word about the people who was killed. That speech made me so sick to my stomach. Colin Powell on the other hand made points about the situation that Howard University was going through. He even made a joke about where was Connie Chung (making reference on the news anchor getting fired for making false reports about Howard University).
Former President, Barack Obama, in his speech “Obama’s Commencement Address at Arizona State University”, the purpose is to convey the ideas that there is always more to do, always more to learn, and always more to achieve. His rhetoric is so successful because of his effective use of pathos, kairos, and structure matters.
Inauguration day marks a new beginning. Every four years, Americans officially welcome a new president. Each president has to address the plans, goals and ideas for the future. Therefore, the inaugural speech is meant to be an emotional and hopeful ceremony for all Americans. The inaugural speech sets the tone for the president’s first weeks in the white house. Ideally this speech will encourage those who voted to believe and trust that the right leader is in the office. On January 20, 2017 Donald Trump gave his inaugural speech and through the use of hyperboles, repetitions, and metaphors he aimed to unify the nation and give hope for the future.
Donald Trump, a once controversial political candidate, gave his 2017 Inaugural address on January 20th, 2017 when he was inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States. Through appeals such as syntax and diction, religion and patriotism, and logic, Donald Trump was able to generate a unifying speech toward his audience. Amidst the growing violence and repercussions of the 2016 election, Donald Trump, in his 2017 Inaugural address, sends the message that he will put America and its citizens first to unite the country and change America for the better.
Famous actors, musicians, politicians, artists and authors are often called upon to deliver commencement addresses at prestigious places of higher learning. It doesn't take Nobel-Prize-winning social scientists or psychologists, or speech professors to predict what these elite guest speakers will say on such occasions such as these. The speaker will tell the graduating class to aim high, never give up, make the most of opportunities, and do as our forbearers did: pull yourselves up by the bootstraps. But when Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks showed up at Vassar College to present the commencement address, his presentation avoided those clichés and platitudes. Hanks was refreshing original and yet remarkably pragmatic. This paper critiques Hanks' themes, examines his rhetorical techniques, and editorially analyzes his purpose.

On January 20, 2009, President Obama was officially inaugurated and sworn in as the forty-fourth president of the United States of America. The tradition of being inaugurated requires the president to give a speech about the goals they want to reach during their presidency.
