Anxiety affects about eighteen percent of the United States’ population ages eighteen and older (Facts). Have you ever experienced an anxiety attack? Many people that suffer from anxiety seek treatment; of those people, many take anti-anxiety medicines. I have only used any kind of anti-anxiety medication once because I know that many of them have serious side effects such as addiction, drowsiness, dizziness, memory loss, nausea, depression, and many more; some medicines, if taken often enough, can even cause one to seem drunk (Smith). The one time I have ever taken any kind of anti-anxiety medication, I felt extremely lethargic and tired until it wore off. I decided that I would not take medicine to manage my anxiety again because there are other ways that do not involve feeling dizzy and sick. However, when prescribed a medicine, doctors observe the patient while on the medication, and they expect the patient to tell them if are experiencing any of the side effects that may come with their specific medicine, so many people believe that one should not worry about the side effects much. They believe that if someone is being monitored, then he or she can take an anti-anxiety medication without worrying about how their lives may be affected because the doctors will determine if the patient needs to adjust their prescription—or their lifestyle—due to the side effects that may be
Can you remember how you felt the last time you took a test or went on a job interview? You probably noticed your heart beating faster or found it hard to breathe. All antidepressants work in a similar way, though there are various types of antidepressants—often called “families”—that each work a bit differently. They all, however, increase the brain’s concentration of various neurotransmitters. Antidepressants are psychiatric medications given to patients with depressive disorders to alleviate symptoms. They correct chemical imbalances of neurotransmitters in the brain which probably cause changes in mood and behavior. Antidepressants may be used for a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including social anxiety disorder, anxiety disorders. Antidepressants were initially developed in the 1950s. Their use has become progressively more common over the last twenty years. Generally speaking, antipsychotic
Many people experience side effects from taking medication that they are prescribed for mental illnesses. The article “Depression” it is announced that medication and psychotherapy can take 4 to 8 weeks to have an effect. The delay can actually increase depression and risk of suicide(par. 48). Three quarters of the benefit from antidepressants seems to be a placebo effect says scientists from “The Depressing New About Antidepressants.”(par. 4). Most common side effects are fatigue, nausea, anxiety, irritability, and dizziness. These side effects could impact how many who take the drugs live, such as molding the rest of their lives around those side effects to make sure they are out of
Adolescence is a difficult time period in a young person’s transition into their later stage of both physical and mental development. Mood disorders are often overlooked during this time for the brain becoming more developed; however among children, anxiety disorders seem to be the most common disorders to be experienced (Nelson; Israel, pg 112). Barlow (2002) defines anxiety as a future-oriented emotion that is characterized by the inability to be in control and predict future events that can be potentially dangerous to the individual. Anxiety shares commonalities with fear, but the difference between the two being that fear is the initial response made from a present threat, where anxiety is due to a unknown future event. A common
Recent studies indicate that limiting the use of certain medications can improve a senior's life. One study, conducted by researchers at Indiana University, finds that the prolonged use of anticholinergics may cause physical changes within the brain that could lead to dementia. Furthermore, The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) released information related to a program it started in 2014: This study examined how the discontinuation of antipsychotic medications affected the seniors who were taking them to treat dementia. The results indicate that seniors’ lives may improve when antipsychotic medications (that are being used to treat dementia) are discontinued.

My point of view regarding the issue of using psychotropic medications to treat ADHD (and/or EBD) in children and adolescents.
A major concern for children who are being treated with medications are that they are either being overprescribed or under prescribed (Rey & Sawyer, 2003). When prescribers have not had sufficient training in use of these medications, especially practicing on youth that are in underserved areas where access to prescribers with expertise in treating youth with psychopharmacology is extremely limited, they are at risk for being under or over prescribed. Medication may be overprescribed when there is insufficient attention paid to other supports and services that may benefit the youth, as well (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s Committee on Community-Based Systems of Care [AACAP], 2012). Another major concern for those who

Antipsychotics are classified as major tranquilizers that are used to treat mental health illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other mental illnesses. They can also treat severe depression and severe anxiety. These antipsychotics drugs reduce or increase the effect of neurotransmitters in the brain to regulate levels that help transfer information throughout the brain. The neurotransmitters that are affected are the serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline.
College represents a form of higher learning. For many, it is also a time for personal growth as we transition into adulthood. This in itself is a stressful situation as one must make drastic adjustments to a new role, environment, and demands. Stress is a major contributor to the development of mental and emotional issues (Rodgers, L., Tennison, L. 2009). Research has been done to determine the impact of depression and anxiety on university students. It has been
Anxiety is sourced by the breakdown of neurotransmitters inside the brain.
