Are friends working together a good idea?
When first starting this module I made the group with four other good friends, thinking that it would be a good idea because we will all get along. I don’t think I have ever been more wrong. From the first assignment there was clashes between members of the group for multiple different reasons and this ultimately lead to the group splitting. This module has revealed different qualities in my so-called friends/team members and really leads to the loss of friendship between us. So are friends working together really a good idea?
For the first assignment this module we shot ‘2002: An Interstellar Gravitational Space Trek’. While shooting this short film I should have realised then that the group was doomed to fail. One member lied about how big his house was so the green screen wouldn’t work properly as we couldn’t light it. While the other two sat round laughing and joking for the whole time and refused to help out with the actual production. The other team member was great and just wanted to get the short film completed, like me but we where slowed down by the other members of the group. What should have took and hour maybe two at most took us nearly seven hours to complete with a lot of the footage missing. We managed to salvage what we shot and made something half decent. Admittedly we did have a good laugh filming but we knew we could not film the same way for the next task if we wanted to do well. Along came our next endeavor
It is important to choose the right friends, good friends can take you wherever you want to go in life, and the wrong friends can be a disastrous decision. A quote from The Pact sums this up nicely, “Friendship can lift you up, strengthen and empower you, or break you down, weaken and defeat you.” (32) This is why it is so important to surround yourself with positive people, and
There are many problems that hinder good group dynamics. We don’t usually have the luxury of picking who we are going to work with on a team; dealing with different personalities and personal agendas are common challenges in working within a team. Other commons challenges like, poor leadership, bad communications, and lack of focus can be helped or eliminated by establishing team roles.
Initially, I had a negative view on group working because of the challenges that I had. When I was in high school, my five other friends and I used to work together in a music competition. Although we were supposed to get together to practice
The first five weeks of this assignment nobody within my group was willing to make an actaul effort outside of class to make time to film and organise how we would approach this assignment. Leaving me to do basically all of the work from ideas, shot lists and organising everyone to meet and film, while Nick (Nicholas Aw) did some of the filming on his own I was left to do 90% of the moving camera work as Lahi and Anna disapeared for a solid hour during filming after returning the Dolly equiptment. From there I edited the assignment together as I’d originally offered to do the editing as I have the Final Cut Pro software on my Laptop. The entire group came up with the idea for the assingment and how we would approach it after we agreed on the idea. Production wise that Role went to myself as I took lead in the group and organised times and shot lists. However, after an chat and email to Louise after class, I stepped back as discussed, but still I have had to find out if anyone was doing any work and doing a small amount of editing and trying to explain that this assignment was about incorporating the moving camera technique not narrative and this has not really been done in the final assignment as the majority of the assignment footage is still shots.
However, if we spent a few moments to get to know each other a bit better, we might find that bonding a positive component in working together in this group and completing assignments. Individuals in group G have expressed their concern with another class group they have and how the communication is not flowing as it does in this group. They are frustrated and overwhelmed with the issues that are problematic in the other groups. There has been descriptions of social loafing and levels of conflict in discussing some of the issues the individual group members have expressed. One of the main complaints is based on how they communicate which is a slow process if only done via email, which one of the group mates has express of how they
Why is working effectively together important? According to the novel, The Chrysalids, by John Wyndham, working together effectively allows a group of individuals to achieve their goals and prevent danger for others. In fact, a group of individuals must be able to understand others who make dangerous decisions, and give others realistic solutions that would control other’s actions and prevent their death. Furthermore, when a group of individuals collaborate with one another, it allows them to defeat and avoid being caught by their enemy. Overall, members of a society must effectively work together in order to avoid chaos.
Friendship plays a major role in developing teamwork, which ultimately leads to a higher rate of success. Friendship is one of the two lessons in taught in this book. Friendship allows people to speak more freely and
Comradery makes the team better and stronger. It elevates moral and work ethic, which leads to greater mission success.
One of the biggest lessons I learned throughout the shoot was the value of maintaining a positive attitude, even when in stressful situations. While I myself tried my best not to ever come across as negative, there were a few instances where other members of the production team came across as tense or even slightly antagonistic toward me. When these events happened, it caused me to feel insecure about the work I was doing. Instead of motivating me to work harder, it only made me feel unhelpful. In my opinion, treating people respectfully and maintaining a positive attitude is a better form of motivation than antagonism, especially when you are in a position such as 1st AD. I’ve found people are more willing to cooperate when you lead with kindness rather than in a dictatorial manner. Furthermore, another thing I plan on continuing to do is ensuring that there is good communication between the Assistant Directors. One of the aspects that I thought worked very well on this shoot was that Savannah (the other AD) and I tried to work as a team as much as possible. As a result, we made sure to communicate as much as possible so we each knew when we were needed, how we were needed, and when the crew was filming among other things. This helped me feel like I was part of team and, in my opinion, helped make the shoot run more
This past week was a very important week, as my group and I filmed most of our sports documentary scenes. And although we have not finished yet, I think we as a group were more effective and focused on our work than we were last week. Before we started filming, I reserved two different locations for my group: the outside field on Monday, and a classroom on Tuesday. I did this after talking with them and making sure that this would be in their interest. When I brought my soccer ball the next day, I was expecting that we would get the whole class period to film. That didn’t happen, and I was reminded once again that you should always plan for setbacks. In addition to reserving space and bringing equipment, I explained Newton’s Laws of Motion
Since much of our time is spend in groups, it is helpful to work in groups because it will give an opportunity to improve their human functioning. Group work helps to develop individual skills in communication, relationship building and asserting oneself
It is important to have a legitimate relationship with the others. This is because it will make it less likely that the personal issues and hatred will affect the group. When the other know about your empathetic to their concern, they are willingly to work and share in
I do not think a leader can maintain a personal friendship with some member of his or her group or team without creating the perception of an in-group. By creating a personal friendship, the leader will get to spend time with this person outside work; by doing so, they leader gets to know this member at a much deeper level than the other member. They get to know how they think, how they act and behave. In addition, the member becomes more trustworthy of the leader, including their judgment. In-group members are invited to participate in decision making and giving more responsibilities, whereas out-group member are managed according to the requirements of the contract that was signed. In-groups also more often achieve higher performance, commitment and job satisfaction that out-groups.
It takes two friends actively being friends to each other for the relational good of friendship to occur (Fowers, 2005). In real life there is no taking turns in “doing” friendship between friends because it is a shared good.
This about how to work with groups and other team members, most of the time it is hard to do but with our jobs nowadays we have to do what we have to do. I like working with others for the most part, especially when they are motivated in getting the job done in a timely manner. Then we have some that just don’t want to help but want everybody else to do their work for them.
