This can be achieved by attending public schools, private schools, or by doing homeschooling. The most popular school system is the public system where children from both genders attend. According to Christina Hoff Sommers in her article, “The Boys at the Back”, published on the internet February 2, 2013, we are seeing girls in these institutions outperforming boys at an increasing rate.

It is true, but single sex schools are failing due to the fact that more people choose to go to a co-ed school. An article that was written about a school in Texas stated that more than 50% of boys and girls in single-gender classrooms cause disruptions, and they bring their behavior from home into the classrooms at school. In an article, it stated that “in October of 2006, federal regulations established the requirements for legally permissible single-sex schools and classes within the public system; nearly 200 schools in South Carolina have single-gender classrooms” (“Single-Sex Education Spreads” 2). Teachers’ interest often drives the attention of students to single-gender classes, and growing interest from their parents is also pushing more schools and districts as they hear about these classrooms (“Single-Gender Classrooms” 2). Based on the situation in Mr. James 5th grade class, should more American elementary school students be taught in single-sex classrooms? Single-sex classrooms are not the reason for academic success and will not be a good educational decision for our future generations, therefore, public schools should not establish single-sex classrooms. Even though some people say single-sex classrooms is a smart decision for education, it can cause extreme sexism and is not the true reason for academic success.

In more recent years, our educational system has faced challenges that are leading our country back into segregation. On September 22, 2015 an article was published on Global News, which was entitled “‘Girl talk’ or ‘career exploration’? Texas school’s gender segregation peeves parents.” In this article, Patricia Kozicka discusses the controversial issue regarding Borchardt Elementary School in Texas, in which students in grade four and five were divided into separate classes based on their gender (Kozicka, 2015). According to the article, it is reported that, at the beginning of this school year, females and males would be placed in separate classes in which they would focus on different curriculums (Kozicka, 2015). Specifically, that females would focus on confidence and relationship building skills, whereas, males would focus on career and future aspirations (Kozicka, 2015). The principle cleared up the issue with an email stating that the class would be split based on gender, however, both would still receive the same curriculum only with different schedules of the lessons and more emphasis on particular topics (Kozicka, 2015).

Because school is where students learn about culture, it follows that the activities therein should contribute to the understanding of their culture, as well as the culture of others, preparing them for a pluralistic world (Quebec Education, 2001, Section 1.2). This makes the project in question all the more relevant as it does the aforementioned. Additionally, by concentrating on gender norms, the project has the ability, and will to expose the intercultural nature of gender boundaries, how stereotypical images of gender pervade the world as a whole (Schieffelin, & Ochs, 1986). But more than just preparing its students theoretically, highlighting the multitude of diversification will work to arouse the feeling of harmony, that no matter their differences, they are all part of humanity. By doing so, the project, and school, will “act as agents of social cohesion by fostering a feeling of belonging,” contributing to a socially just society (Quebec Education, 2001, Section 1.2).

Many people might say the single sex schools are ineffective, because girls and boys need to know how to communicate with the opposite sex. They should be enforced to help children reach their full dreams without the thought of humility standing in their way. School is a place where students get acquainted with the basics of the life, which further helps them to foster their proficiency level in different aspects of life required in this competitive world, and the most important part of school is not where students get time to socialize with each other.
