Summary of myth Education is arguably the most fundamental tool a person can have, it sets the foundation for future success and directly affect earning potential. There are numerous controversies regarding education and there are multiple views of these controversies, but the main area of concern, seems to be, whether or not single-sex schools leads to better academic outcomes than co-educational schools. Most people infer that single-sex schools lead to better academic outcomes, simply due to the contrast between males and females; logically most people accredit the differences in gender to differences in learning styles. What does Jean Mercer conclude from this rational assertion?
According to Mercer, teen boys and teen girls are extremely different, these gender differences, in turn, leads to different treatment and outcomes for males and females. Yes, Mercer believes there are fundamental differences between the two genders, but she doesn’t agree with the contention, that students who attend single-sex schools have a scholastic advantage over students who attend co-educational schools. Mercer doesn’t agree with this claim because it’s exceptionally challenging to document, whether males and females have different academic needs and abilities. This can be achieved by attending public schools, private schools, or by doing homeschooling. The most popular school system is the public system where children from both genders attend. An article that was written about a school in Texas stated that more than 50% of boys and girls in single-gender classrooms cause disruptions, and they bring their behavior from home into the classrooms at school. In an article, it stated that “in October of 2006, federal regulations established the requirements for legally permissible single-sex schools and classes within the public system; nearly 200 schools in South Carolina have single-gender classrooms” (“Single-Sex Education Spreads” 2). On September 22, 2015 an article was published on Global News, which was entitled “‘Girl talk’ or ‘career exploration’? Texas school’s gender segregation peeves parents.” In this article, Patricia Kozicka discusses the controversial issue regarding Borchardt Elementary School in Texas, in which students in grade four and five were divided into separate classes based on their gender (Kozicka, 2015). According to the article, it is reported that, at the beginning of this school year, females and males would be placed in separate classes in which they would focus on different curriculums (Kozicka, 2015). Specifically, that females would focus on confidence and relationship building skills, whereas, males would focus on career and future aspirations (Kozicka, 2015). The principle cleared up the issue with an email stating that the class would be split based on gender, however, both would still receive the same curriculum only with different schedules of the lessons and more emphasis on particular topics (Kozicka, 2015).
Because school is where students learn about culture, it follows that the activities therein should contribute to the understanding of their culture, as well as the culture of others, preparing them for a pluralistic world (Quebec Education, 2001, Section 1.2). This makes the project in question all the more relevant as it does the aforementioned. Additionally, by concentrating on gender norms, the project has the ability, and will to expose the intercultural nature of gender boundaries, how stereotypical images of gender pervade the world as a whole (Schieffelin, & Ochs, 1986). But more than just preparing its students theoretically, highlighting the multitude of diversification will work to arouse the feeling of harmony, that no matter their differences, they are all part of humanity. By doing so, the project, and school, will “act as agents of social cohesion by fostering a feeling of belonging,” contributing to a socially just society (Quebec Education, 2001, Section 1.2).
Many people might say the single sex schools are ineffective, because girls and boys need to know how to communicate with the opposite sex. They should be enforced to help children reach their full dreams without the thought of humility standing in their way.
