Assignment 1: Human comfort within buildings Scenario- A property developer is converting an old railway station into retail and office accommodation. The client is keen to make the working environment for the staff as comfortable as possible. As a consultant, explain how this can be done by addressing the relevant grading criteria.
Introduction- I will begin by trying to understand what the client is doing, and then I will include a picture of the old railway station, but also a picture of what the client hopes the offices and retail businesses will look like when they are completed
In this photograph we can see the old railway station, in which the client hopes to convert into an office.
In this picture we can see what the client is aiming for their office to look like.
Task 1A
Identify the basic factors that will influence human comfort in the office accommodation in thermal, acoustic and visual terms.
Thermal
Thermal comfort is when people feel comfortable in the office, neither too warm nor cold, buildings should ensure that people are warm enough in the winter and cool enough in the summer, and causing no discomfort to the people working in the business Thermal comfort is the temperature inside the office; the minimum work temperature should be at least 13 degrees and TUC guidelines a maximum 30
The Lime Tree Estate – Factors which have lead to the decline of this estate
The office has existed in one way or another throughout time as an administrative supplement to the power of the state. But for the sake of time, let's go through the landmarks of workspace history.
The work of Judd (1997) explores how an environment is designed to enhance well-being. E.g. does the design of the building compensate for disability, maximise independence, enhance self-esteem, demonstrate care for staff, reinforce personal identity and welcome relatives and the local community?
* The individuals physical environment could be their home or a residential setting so we have to ensure they are comfortable in their surroundings, so the temperature, light and seating should be considered. Having the possessions and pictures they like around them and removing any equipment should make them feel more settled
Before a client session starts it is important to make sure that the facilities and environment are chosen carefully. The practice room should be safe, clean
2.3.1 The proposed project will face a high level of repetition as there will be a certain amount of similar or identical hotel rooms and floors. Thus, the workers’ expertise will increase with time. However, the design

For this assignment, I selected a property located in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Built in 1996, this one-story building is used for commercial purposes for a rental and cleaning company, and it combines the functions of an office and a storage-warehouse. The types of office activities carried out in the building include organizing and scheduling deliveries and pickups, preparing reports, ordering supplies, answering the phones and communication with customers. The storage-warehouse operations include organizing the cleaning supplies and rental products and

2.3 The main conditions that affect individual comfort within the environment are warmth, lighting, food and cleanliness. With regards to warmth it is important to ask the individual whether they are comfortable especially in the winter months when the thermostat may need to be turned higher up. A change to the blankets on the bed will be necessary according to the seasons and particularly in winter a blanket over them while they are sitting in the chair or a hot water bottle may be required. Lighting is more often than not unchangeable and it is important to ensure that light bulbs work. I do care for a lady who felt that the lighting in her front room was to bright so we brought lamps down from of the spare bedrooms to create a softer feel to the room which she is now pleased with. Food is extremely important in affecting individual comfort as we all need to eat and drink and we also like to have snacks to eat between meals or while watching TV. We can ensure that the fridge is
The building was originally constructed in 1974 and was renovated in 2013. The building nowadays is a typical sample of green building with all new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and data systems. It is designed to make it one of the most energy efficient office buildings in the country. The owner of the project is United States General Services Administration. The work was completed by a custom integrated team of Cutler Anderson Architects as the design excellence architect, SERA Architects as the executive and interior design architect, and Howard
To begin my assignment I would need to look at an Old Railway Station and how human comfort is affected within the building. In an old railway station there may already be rooms designed for offices and maybe a large area for retail depending on the size of the building, but when it was built along time ago human comfort may not have been taken into consideration as deeply. In an old building like this there will be small windows which will restrict natural light and also fresh air getting in, also with it being an office and retail accommodation together this means there may be a lot of noise in the offices which could cause a stressful environment to work in. When newly converted the new shop will be open and welcoming for the customers by having bright warm colours to make it feel inviting. It will be designed for a small shop like a coffee shop or small groceries shop. The offices will
Thermal environment within the office: the thermal factors of the office block should be a constant comfortable heat this allows the workers to concentrate a lot better and results in a better work environment. This can be accomplished by underground heating using heated pipes under a carpeted office block. Also insulation will be needed to a high degree which will allow the room to remain at the constant temperature desired I mentioned
Traveling anywhere can be a hectic experience. Thinking about all of the planning and the actual flying can make what’s supposed to a relaxing trip stressful. However, traveling somewhere where you don’t know anyone with you or the language where you’re going make can amplify the stress. Going to Bali with my CCS group was something I never thought I would be able to do. The majority of the trips I’ve been on I’ve typically gone alone due to my anxiety disorder, so going somewhere with complete strangers was already out of my comfort zone. However, I’ve always wanted to experience other cultures and travel to exotic locations, and I knew to do that knew I had to step out of my comfort zone and select a trip where I knew nothing about. It turns out selecting Bali for my CCE was the right choice. This trip allowed us to completely immerse into the culture for two weeks, and allowed us to take time to learn it alongside each other. In those two weeks, I learned that Balinese culture is a culture very different from our own, and experiencing it was an enormous culture shock.
