In the United States, about 1 in every 68 births has a mental disorder called autism. (CDC, 2014) However in the world, about 1 percent has autism. (CDC, 2014) Autism is a mental disorder that an individual develops in their early childhood with the causes of abnormal brain structure, shape, and function. This mental disorder deals with the impairment of someone’s ability to communicate and their interaction with others. Each individual with autism is unique and will have different treatments provided for them. Based on the website Autism Speaks, it says an individual will have an intervention plan for their specific needs. From this intervention plan, they will have behavioral treatments, medications or both. By addressing the medical conditions an individual may have, it will improve their attention, learning and related behaviors. (Autism Speaks, 2016) There are many different treatments provided for individuals with autism and it will most likely be a part of the intervention plan. From the Autism Speaks website, structured and therapeutic activities are provided, at least 25 hours a week. There will also be learning activities to help with their ability to learn. The adult doesn’t know what to do and needs help, because they are afraid of their future and wants to get better for themselves. According to what Dr. Marie has to say, her options will be to regulate the person’s emotions and to also soothe themselves. Many treatment approaches have developed different ways of dealing with the challenges of autism. First, there is the theory of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which consists of giving a child a specific task, which teaches skills from basic ones to more complex ones, such as social interaction. Children taking this approach, work 30-40 hours a week with a trained professional.
