I am an AVID Tutor at my old high school Sierra Vista High School in Baldwin Park. This is going to be my second year working at SVHS and so far I love working at this school and helping the students. I work with sophomore, junior and, senior students. AVID is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. It is also a program that motivates students to try to go to college. As an AVID tutor, I am responsible for helping the students by tutoring them in small groups in a specific subject matter (Math-History) by using homework/lesson discussion in groups. We use the Socratic questioning to get students to think critically about a problem they are struggling on and help them when they really cannot solve the question they have. I try to find resources (videos, notes, textbooks) to help the students get a better understanding of their question. Every Friday I grade
Providing a rich and varied context is essential, tutors should utilize a range of different methods to engage all students interests and learning styles. Identifying and meeting the learners needs are important so that tutors can facilitate students learning and ensure that both the students and tutors meet the required goals. Each learner is unique and brings to the learning situation their own different learning style, knowledge set, past experiences and motivational levels. It is important for tutors to consider the level of knowledge and skill development attained by the learners prior to instruction through a variety of different types of assessment, in order to offer a high quality learning experience, delivered and resourced to suit the needs of the learner. Tutors can assess learner needs through numerous means, such as; informal and formal assessment strategies, pre-course interviews and learning style tests. This will allow tutors to tailor lessons and activities to support learners individual needs.
Tutoring is designed just for that particular client and his needs. Kim Bloomberg-Schamus’s approach is different. She asks her clients that after each exam, or essays is graded students are encouraged to bring in their exams to be reviewed. Therefore, going over each mistake to teach the student how to do the problem correctly. It is all about individualized attention that most other tutoring companies don’t have the time to do.
As a student at Portland Community College, I have found PCC to be a diverse and inclusive place for educators and students alike. This is achieved by fostering an accepting environment by the PCC staff who make this possible. If you see an opening position for a writing tutor, someone who would promote equity and efficiently assist students with their writing, please consider me for the opening position.
I learned that my focus learner isn’t able to communicate as much as I would like him to do, not because he isn’t confident in his answers but because he isn’t confident in his pronunciation. His work shows that he knows what he is doing, but when I check for understanding verbally he second guesses himself or doesn’t finish saying a word in fear that he is saying it wrong. In terms of my teaching practice, I’ve learned that I need to be more patient when waiting for my students to think on their own. Sometimes I want them to understand what is being taught so much that I try to make it easier by hinting at things that may not benefit them in the end because I’m not letting my students think for themselves. Additionally, I learned that a little
The overall purpose of this Instructional Design project is to identify how dogs can help to enrich the lives of those who are disabled by subsequently being rescued from destruction. “The instructional design process begins with the identification of a problem or need and determine the appropriate intervention” (Morris, 2013). The urgent need for finding new homes has been identified among Canine Rescue Groups.
At a young age, school work is sometimes not one of the main things on a child’s agenda. They can easily get distracted and would rather play games on the electronics or gossip with friends and find ways of getting around their school work. I’ve found that being an ARAC tutor is more than just a job. It allows for college students to make a difference on an individual level that can later on impact a whole community. Working in the Bibb County schools has provided me with insight into a community that is less fortunate than where I grew up. It has made me realize that I am giving these students more than just help with their education. I am providing them with an image of a person that provides a positive contribution to
The therapy tool I explored and critiqued was the Language Lab RTI. This therapy tool is a response to intervention (RTI) program for teaching grammar, vocabulary and story telling. It is designed for elementary school students from grade kinder through fourth whose English language abilities are below grade level standards. After exploring this therapy tool, I found it to be a great intervention tool because it is a 15-hour program that provides tier II and III language intervention for children in groups of 2-4. The language lab RTI comes in a box and contains all the required materials for the program. This intervention program can be done in a clinic setting or in a classroom, which is perfect for school aged children. The main goal for
To celebrate the 10 millionth student using Impero, Impero's Board of Directors has announced the "Best Technology for Schools" Grant. Teachers may or may not have experience in developing a website when they join the EISD, even with some experience, they may never have used the Schoolwires software or Office 365, it would therefore be unreasonable to expect prior knowledge of these two specific components. However, Schoolwires does have an interface that is similar to common word-processing applications that they will have used (e.g. Microsoft Word, Apple’s Pages or Google Docs). With Office 365 they will need to understand how to save files to or access files from OneDrive and/or a team site rather than a computer, network drive or external drive. The pre-requisite skills are therefore basic computer literacy skills
It is heartbreaking for parents to watch their kids struggle in school. Thankfully, math tutoring centers provide students with the tools they need to achieve academic success. When children in Lorton, VA, need help understanding mathematical concepts, their families turn to Mathnasium of Lorton.
I write my personal philosophy from the perspective of a maths tutor, as I am yet to engage as a maths teacher. Ideally, I would love to impart on my students the same love of mathematics as I have. However, the world is rarely an ideal place.
Barriers to participation in further education can be considerable for many Foundation Learning students. When planning and developing my resources I shall remember the following points which will ensure I agree to the needs of the learners I am teaching.
Last school year, three of my peers and I decided that our high school needed a peer-tutoring club, so the last few months of my junior year and the first few weeks of my senior year were dedicated to starting this organization. We organized the structure and goals of the club, and presented our ideas to the administrators. Once we got our approval, we immediately began planning lessons. Two days a week we meet with groups of students that come to us for help on improving their ACT scores or general grades. Our service is open to any and every student. We have tutored students in dual-enrollment courses and in standard academic classes.
Developing a tutoring philosophy takes time, as a tutor I had to build a relationship with the students that I was tutoring before I could understand my personal method of teaching. However, as the semester progressed, I could feel myself developing a natural rhythm when working with the students on their lab materials and the conversations during the tutoring sessions began to flow.
