Batman's Origin Story

Myths are everlasting stories that have been passed on for decades. Usually, these stories contain special significance depending on culture and religion. Although there are several types of mythology, Greek mythology is one of the most popular. It was created by the ancient Greeks to serve as a basis for their religious beliefs and cultural practices. Greek myths consist of gods and goddesses, which obtain unique superpowers that permit them to control nature in all of its forms. Furthermore, ancient mythology has inspired contemporary culture by linking similar characteristics to new characters and improved stories. Modern day society has reimagined mythology through superheroes that save the world from villains and crime. Some superheroes have special powers either from birth or from scientific experiments, while others become heroes by training and with the help of modern technology; however, these modifications do not disregard the fact that modern folklore developed from ancient tales. For instance, Batman is the modern interpretation of Achilles because they are an archetype, share several characteristics, and demonstrate the evolution of mythology.

The Byronic hero is immortalized as the bridge between epic hero and an anti-hero, in-between with the romantic and tragic hero as well. The main key elements that are present in many Byronic heroes is their sense of darkness and social exile, the struggle for acceptance not only from themselves but also from society, and finally internal traumas that were caused from past events. One of the modern characters that immortalizes the Byronic hero is DC Comics, Batman. From the original comic books, to television adaptations, and finally to the big screen, there is a lot of material that helps fixate him as a truly Byronic hero—all the way from his childhood to his adult and even afterlife years. “Somewhere, a Long, Happy Life Probably Awaits You” (Jill Sexsmith) and “Batman and Robin Have an Altercation” (Stephen King) both share a common trait between each of the two stories that revolve around a mentally ill family member. The two stories each follow in accordance with Tzvetan Todorov’s Theory of Narrative. They each begin with an equilibrium and after a disruption, they fall into an offset of the balance of the story. The characters then recognize the problem and take action to restore the initial balance that had previously existed. In “Somewhere,”, theory of narrative is portrayed through a man and his mentally ill wife. The author uses two stories, one about the man’s wife and another about the tree on their front lawn that coincide to develop a path that follows the Todorov’s theory. Batman follows the story of a man and his father who has Alzheimer’s disease. This short story follows a day with the man’s father to convey Todorov’s theory.

The creators of the movie “Batman Begins” use literary devices such as flashbacks, archetypes, motif and character development to convey the theme that if one is willing to try hard enough to make a change in the world or in themselves it is possible.

In the world of superheroes, there are numerous that believe they are heroes, while in actuality, they are merely vigilantes. This is demonstrated throughout the world of superheroes, but it is not as prominently demonstrated as in Batman. Batman presents himself as a hero, while he is only an over imaginative vigilante. He is more a vigilante than a hero since he has the ability to stop crime, but doesn’t, he only does deeds for his own benefit, and he helps the law but isn’t part of it. These are only a few ways Batman is a vigilante, rather than a hero. These are mainly based upon the idea of him trying to right his own past.

In a very highly tense and stressful situation, people tend to go as far as they can to avoid the situation at all costs. To people that have comic book illiteracy, Batman and Superman would seem like they would be pretty similar to each other, which is true but only to a degree. They have similar names, outfits, and both live two different lives, etc. On the other hand, when it comes down to what makes these two men special, they are polar opposites. They have differences in backgrounds, powers, motivations, and in what makes them popular among fans. Despite their similarities in outward appearances, Batman and Superman are exceedingly distinct from one another.

Since his creation, readers and viewers have admired Batman's unique ability to battle villainy, transcend the law and administer justice. As cultivators of the noir genre in film as well as in literature, Americans have always identified with this enigmatic hero, who exists on the margins of society and yet represents one of the largest corporations in the world. The evolution of Batman in particular and the superhero genre in general (from comic book to television to film and back again) has seen in the latest adaptation from Christopher Nolan's Batman revamp a veritable tilting point for the character once known as the World's Greatest Detective. Batman is one of the many fictional superheroes which appears in the “American comic books” that is published by the DC comics. The character is a secret identity for Bruce Wayne, the only heir to Wayne Enterprises. Bruce Wayne swore an oath of vengeance when he witnessed the death of his parents;Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne (Diamond, 2015). Bat man combats criminals in Gotham: a fictional city, with assistance from various characters, for example, his butler Alfred and Gordon; Gotham city police commissioner. Unlike many of the superheroes characters, Batman possesses no powers .Bruce Wayne trained himself intellectually and physically .it is from dedication to training he possessed the useful traits of physical prowess, martial arts skills, detective skills and indomitable will to fight for justice. Though his motive is to combat crime and protect people of Gotham city from criminals, the justice system in most of the times views Batman as a villain and vigilante. He can inflict fear to Gotham city criminals thereby bringing calmness to the city. He was a gritty and depressing character that has been able to remain in print even to this day. But not even Batman, Superman, or even Captain Marvel could brace themselves for the arrival of the Marvel comics.

Now in these days everyone one likes to read comic books since they became part of our society. What makes them interesting is how entertaining they could get giving us different points of views on different stories of superheroes. Many of us believe that “Classic superheroes stories are wildly fun, suspenseful and exciting” (Tom and Matt Morris) forgetting the idea of what really makes a hero. Different perceptions of superheroes are considered based on their wrong actions and way of thinking. Frank’s Miller Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is one of the comic books that make us “rethink the conception of the superhero and press each of us to reconsider some of the fundamental moral principles
