This study investigated the effects of a behaviour modification plan based on a tripartite design in increasing the consumption of fresh FV and decreasing junk food eating behaviour. The results showed that both the frequency and amount of fresh FV increased after the implementation of a behaviour modification plan by modifying the antecedents to the behaviour and when reinforcing the behaviour of FV eating behaviour. As anticipated, both frequency and amount of junk food eating behaviour decreased when junk food behaviour was not reinforced contingently or was punished.
The results supported Skinners (1938) theory of operant conditioning where behaviour could be modified and the use of reinforcement or punishment can increase or decrease

However, the process of creating a behaviour modification plan may also influence these results. Noojier et al. (2006) has suggested that the intention of changing behaviours influences an individual’s thought process, thus behaviour. Hence, in future replications it would be best to use both cognitive and behavioural therapy in increasing the consumption of fresh FV. It is also observed that 42% of participants endorsed that they were living with parents or careers. This means that social influences may motivate an individual thus increase the desired behaviour and decrease the undesired behaviour (Noojier et al. 2006). Thus, in future studies it would be best to separate the recorded data for participants who lived with parents or carers and with other’s that do not, to see whether this has an effect on our hypothesis. Since our sample size has been taken from university students, our results may not be able to be generalised to the entire population, thus future studies could incorporate a wider range of individuals to see the effects of behaviour modification plans.
Despite these limitations, this research adds to the study of self-implementation of behaviour modification plans. The behaviour modification plan followed a tripartite design. First the antecedents to the behaviour, in particular FV eating behaviour were identified
Participants: this study will help participants to improve their health promoting behaviors according to the least frequent healthy behavior.
I consider only the first two practices as health promotion activities. So, to increase health promotion, I chose three activities that I could incorporate including, getting eight hours of sleep nightly, removing diet soda from my diet, and adding weight training three times a week. A full-time job, family responsibilities and class work are perceived barriers to getting adequate sleep and participating in strength training. My desire to do well in school conflicts with my fear that less time for class work results in lower grades. Pender’s model acknowledges the importance of personal perceptions by stating that they directly, and indirectly influence health behavior (Petiprin, 2016-b). To incorporate these two activities, I need to assess and document my daily time commitments and activities. This will show where I could fit these health practices into my life. Another possibility is asking family members to take over some of my responsibilities on certain days to free up my time. Abstaining from diet drinks may be more difficult because eating patterns and food/drink preferences are ingrained from past experiences. For example, if someone thinks pizza and a cola go together, then eating pizza while having a glass of water is less enjoyable. For me, the key to giving up diet drinks is finding an alternative beverage such as tea or fruit infused water that I could substitute when wanting something to drink other than water. To meet these goals, Pender’s model emphasizes the need to identify and commit to a strategy which will support healthy behaviors (Petiprin,
For this client, the target behavior is to increase the number of fruits and vegetables consumed per day, decrease the number of high sugar and high fat meals consumed per day, decrease the number of cigarettes
This paper will focus on theoretical approaches to health behaviors. When looking at behaviors in theory, it is important to understand what is actually possible then what realistically may be true. This paper will Identify a health behavior issue targeting a specific population and its goals in the program. Next, the paper will identify a health behavior model and/or theory to examine specific issues. Finally, this paper will include how the given model and/or theory focus on the issue and facilitating the behavior health change in the selected population within the target population.
As a manager myself I used various forms of strategies to motivate employees and to keep morale up. In the field of human services it is very easy to overexert yourself and employees and the maintaining motivation for employees can be challenging. The strategy I commonly follow is the behavior modification method, this is defined as “changing behavior and encouraging appropriate actions by relating the consequences of behavior to the behavior itself” (Ferrell, Hirt, & Ferrell, 2009). I have found this method to be effective, however this method has come with the noted side effect of high turnover and some employee dissatisfaction. Although we have these side effects I stand by this method given the level of work that we do. When assisting people
The majority of people will decide to change their health behavior at least once throughout their lifetime. The reasons for the change might be quite different from individual to individual. Some may be motivated to take action after experiencing a life threatening illness, while others are proactive and change their health behavior to decrease the risks of developing a potential disease. However, even if the reasons for the change are valid and well understood, there is a great possibility that one will not follow set goals long term. If the implementation of the scientifically proven health behavior change treatments in people’s routine is something that is going to cause them a lot of effort, or is difficult to implement, then they probably
The health issue of childhood obesity affects the well-being of many children and adolescents; however, applying Icek Ajzen and Martin Fishbein’s Theory of Planned Behavior directly reflects the behaviors of the parents and their influential habits on their children. Before the Theory of Planned Behavior, Ajzen and Fishbein developed the Theory of Reasoned Action based off of Donelson E. Dulany’s Theory of Propositional Control from 1968 (Boster, Shaw, Carpenter, & Massi-Lindsey, 2014). The Theory of Reasoned Action consists of four major elements, “normative social pressure (the subjective norm), affect (attitude toward the behavior), cognition (behavioral intention), and action (behavior)” (Boster et al., 2014, pp.700), which illustrates
The journal “ From mindless eating to mindlessly eating better” discusses how certain environmental factors such as; size, shape, color and layout contribute to the amount of food a person consumes. A point made in this journal was that these factors influence our eating behavior by increasing the amount we eat and decreasing our observation on how much we are consuming. Another point made in the journal was that education on nutrition would be simply ineffective in reversing our eating behaviors. Lastly, the journal provided results that suggest principles that can help people overcome mindless eating by making small changes that can help diminish bad eating habits.
At the beginning of this assignment (#1) I had high self-regulation capabilities, but as the time goes on, it’s getting harder to regulate my eating habits. My family has been constantly treating my out to lunches and dinners and I end up eating food both healthy and unhealthy. I can began to combat this by ordering healthy foods such as a salad for fries or fruit for a soda. Although this process is on that is always to start, it’s harder to continue this lifestyle change for the long run. By using the concepts of self- regulation, making smarter decisions via my environmental determinants and altering my psychological determinants of this behavior, I can continue to change my eating
The study included 283 third-grade students and their parents. All the children were participating in the BASICS program. The program used lesson that were based on "Pick a better snack & Act" campaign. The study called for the parents and children to complete an evaluation before and after the program. On average the parents were 30 years old. The groups sampled were selected randomly from school participating in the program. The evaluation judged the program in several categories. The categories included recognition of healthy lifestyles and the changes in the parents and children’s behavior.
Health is the most precious asset in the possession of human beings. From my classroom experience and through interaction with literature texts, I have come to the conclusion that people can be responsible for their health. As a student of public health, it is important to maintain good personal health in order to address the public health problems in the future. To be responsible for my personal health, I have taken the initiative to implement a personal health behavior changing plan to test whether a positive reinforcement of rewarding myself to watch one episode of my favorite TV show each night is an effective method to change my eating habit in a short period of time.
My topic for the Behavior Modification was to lose 10 pounds by exercising at least 30 minutes a day along with pursuing a healthy diet by the end of the semester. The strategies I incorporated to support this goal are: phone apps and using the P90X exercise program. The thought of using the apps, is to see the actual data and to point out unhealthy behaviors. Furthermore, healthy eating and daily exercise would promote sound body and mind along with restful sleep patterns. I also included prayer in my everyday workouts asking for the strength and stamina to get through the day.
Fast food has turned into a diet to millions of people across the world. This is because of the fact that the food is readily available and provided in many business premises along the streets. As one of those individuals who have been addicted to fast food consumption, I have realized the need to change the behavior for the better. There are various benefits of reducing the intake of fast food, strategies and challenges of changing my behavior which will be analyzed.
Many things can improve health whether it be for ones short-term or long-term health. After performing the task of composing a daily health diary for fifteen consecutive days, I have come to the realization that there are many things that I could change in oder to improve my health. I will be proposing a plan in this paper that will consist of behavioral changes for the next five weeks. I will want to engage in these changes for a various reason, I will conduct the plan for my adaption to these positive behavior changes, and I will strategize how to overcome any obstacles that I may face in this journey.
For this health behavior change paper, I selected to target a behavior that I have wanted to change for a long time, junk food. By observing and evaluating my behavior I was able to provide some possible solutions to this problem. I have gained a lot of insight from doing this project. I felt motivated to change my eating habits because I wanted to better my lifestyle, and I had very little resistance in starting this behavior change project.
