In the beginning of starting my service learning, I preferred to work with older adolescents. I believe that it would be easier to interact, engaged, and teach adolescents life skills that they could use once I left my service site. I do not want children in the future and I did not think I could manage younger children because I typically get annoyed quickly because they need consistent help and guidance. Younger children need an extreme amount of attention and I am someone who prefers to watch over children, but also allow them to have their independents and learn through experiences. I realize with younger children I am not granted that ability because in a blink of an eye, if I am not watching closely, there could be a serious safety or health concern. I was nervous when I was told that I will be working with children ages 5 and 6. I have been apart from my family for five years, so I have a disconnect to what children their ages like to do or what interest them. Despite my preferred preference, I have learned an abundance of knowledge about this age group. It is important that adults that interact with this age group realize how crucial their thoughts, feeling and behaviors influences the children's future interactions with their peers and authority figures. Children academic development and social/emotional development are important for their future success. Children around this age are like sponges and are looking to adults for guidance. They depend on us to keep
4.1 Analyse the importance of early identification of speech, language and communication delays and disorders and the potential risks of late recognition. It is essential that speech, language and communication delays and disorders are noticed early so the relevant interventions can be used to support the child or young person. Answer the questions below.
routines is a great way to assess children. This will allow the teacher to get the most accurate information of the child’s progress.
Isabella Manns is a third grader at Vienna Elementary School in Scott County, Indiana. Isabella is a quirky young girl who enjoys playing music and sports. Isabella answered most of the questions without any trouble as well as giving ample answers on a few. According to Piaget’s State of Concrete Operations (CITE), Isabella is on par with other children her age. Developmentally, Isabella is comparable to other children her age in terms of language, cognitive, social, and emotional domains. Characteristically, Isabella and I are very alike, but there are a few minor things the make us different. Most importantly, Isabella has given a taste of what one needs to expect in the teaching field in her age range.
At the beginning of my third observation at the Child Development Center, I decided to observe a three-year-old girl that I will call Cady. I chose her because of her irrepressible attitude, which shown through in all of her actions and loudly voiced opinions. Throughout the semester not only did I gain developmental information about Cady, I gained some background information as well. She is the youngest child in the CDC, having only turned three during the last semester. Not only is she the youngest child at the CDC, she is the youngest of five children at home.
Throughout my course work I have learned how essential Early Childhood Education is to the proper growth and development of young children. Without quality care young children can be limited socially, emotionally, and cognitively. Personally, my reasons for choosing ECE as my field of study has matured into responding to the need to provide quality professionals that produce quality care to every child regardless of ethnicity, ability, culture, or gender. However, looking back on my prior experiences I have worked with children in all capacities within my community. I have coached soccer of various ages, taught Sunday School, ran preteen Bible studies, and taught character building classes for young girls. Even though these experiences motivated me to enter this field, I now see child development from a totally different perspective.
I believe that every child is special and unique their learning experience is based in their environments around of them. Family is essential to children?s development, and it?s the first school where they get first knowledge that will define personality characteristics and behavior.
Choosing a child to interact with is a complicated process; however I have decided that my niece, Paige, with whom I spend a comfortable amount of time is a great candidate for this assignment. She is at ease in my presence and I can accurately assess her developmental level without too much bias. At two years old, Paige is in Piaget’s preoperational stage of development, which is characterized by the ability to use symbols and language to “represent objects in the environment.” Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development include the abilities: “visual acuity, hand-eye coordination, planning ahead, and caution.” Developmentally, Paige is not exceptionally advanced in the preoperational stage, as her language skills are not fully
In the classroom it is beneficial for a teacher to have a basic understanding of a child’s development growth. A child’s emotional, physical, mental, social, and intellectual foundations are still developing in elementary. Along with those foundations, there are also intellectual stages of development. That being said, it is important to be aware of developmentally appropriate curriculum so teachers are not teaching material too advanced for a certain age group to grasp. I personally feel that education is a form of child development. They key to effectiveness is for a teacher to understand the study of child development. The understanding of child development helps a teacher to plan and develop content and complexity of the lessons and curriculum
Over the past eight weeks this class has not only fulfilled my major requirements, but also made me understand more about the complexity of child development and how I can become a better person as a future parent and educator. Since I am an Education major, the four topics that would benefit me in the future are Erikson’s stages, Induction, Educational Self Fulfilling Philosophy, and Adolescence. I plan to be successful with my career and use what I have learned in Child Development to prepare future’s leaders of tomorrow.
My article critique on Child development, turned out to be very resourceful and knowledgeable. In my Introduction to Psychology 201S CRN 24460 class, we discussed development across the Lifespan and on my pyschlab, they went into further detail about the development in each stage of life. In the article “Why children differ in motivation to learn: Insights from over 13,000 twins from 6 countries” by Yulia Kovasa, Gabrielle Garon-Carriere, Michel Boivine, Stephen A. Vygotsky sociocultural theory of child development has direct application towards the experiences of children in classroom settings (Berk, 2008). Vygotsky’s theory was that all people in a child’s environment were important to a child’s growth, which would apply directly to classroom settings. In 1945, Rene Spitz wrote concerning the high death of infants under one-year-of-age who resided in institutions (Spitz, 1945). Spitz noted that the reason for the high death rate was a lack of stimulation and not disease along with the absence of the mothers. The work of Spitz and other researchers supports Vygotsky’s ideas that a child is not only a product of their cultural environment, but also affects their environment (Berk, 2008).
This semester in Child Development has helped me a great deal. I came into this class wanting to be a Child Development teacher at the high school level. I am leaving this class with the same ambition to become a Child Development teacher. I have learned so much by taking this class and I know it will all be helpful in the future once I am standing at the front of a classroom. Also, just by watching the way Mary teaches the class, I have learned things that I want to take into my own style of teaching.
In summary, incident one highlighted several factors which helped to promote the development of the child’s writing. However, from analysing this critical incident, it appears to show several elements that could have been considered and incorporated to ensure the child’s needs were paramount.
Compare and contrast a child from younger age group with a child from an older age group.
The birth and growth of mankind are magical. During these eight weeks study, I found the huge interest in lifespan human development. This course taught me the “roots” of human beings. Until now, I realized how human was born, and I also learn a lot about human development and possible diseases in each period. Besides, I learned the research process. They are really wonderful knowledge and helpful to me!
