College Education Doesn´t Guarantee Success Essay

“You don’t have to be a genius or a visionary or even a college graduate to be successful. You just need a framework and a dream” (Michael Dell).College education prices are not worth it. College does not land you a good paying job, you end up in deep debt, and it is not worth it for low-income families. College prices are not worth it. Why, because of the rises cost of tuition and the lack of public school preparation.

From a young age, most kids have been brainwashed to believe that college is the only path to success in life. Is it? Is college the right choice for everyone? Or are there better alternatives? These are questions that have been asked many different times but it seems like there has been a lack of a clear-cut answer. There are many different things to consider when looking at colleges as the only path to success.

Nowadays, companies require at least a college degree for better income. If an employer has two candidates for an open position, he will pick the best of both the one that fills all the requirements. Also, there is a high probability that the person chosen is the one with the highest level of education. Another reason to have a college degree is to earn more money with better features and benefits. In today’s society the cost of rent, food, medical insurance, and others bills is too high. A person with a high school diploma may need to have two jobs to support its family. Nowadays, the best recommendations are to either have a business or at least have a degree this will facilitate your income. A college degree is the base to accomplish higher goals in a company. The more education an employee has the faster this person gets to move up in a company.

One question that comes to mind when graduating high school is, “should I attend college?” For many graduates this question have a very obvious answer. A high school graduate may state that, “college is the best option if one is trying to get a higher level of education, and will help one compete for a higher paying job.” However, in my opinion most graduates do not consider the fact that going to college is a very big decision to make and that the schoolwork will not be easy. Going to college is not the best choice for every high school graduate because many students cannot handle college, colleges’ lower standards, and not all jobs require a college degree.

Not only do we get a lot out of getting a college degree in what we want to do, but so does our society. There are requirements for every job for a reason. Jobs need people that specialize in just that career field. They want us to be passionate about what we do and more importantly know exactly what we are doing. For example, hospitals have no room for mistakes because not only may it cost a life, it can also costs them money. We feel safer knowing people know how to do their jobs right. College education is necessary whenever there is a shortage in certain careers. It’s important to have higher education so there can be growth and competition in our society.

Right now in our society a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather a necessity. We are practically raised and conditioned to believe that one needs higher education in order to succeed in life. There is a saying that says "if you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Nowadays, going to college is common in United States. According to the statistic, there are more than 70 percents of the student are going to college after high school graduation. Not all have to go to college to be successful, and not all hardworking jobs require a college degree. College is not necessarily a measure of intelligence. Especially in todays economy, a lot of people can not afford to pursue higher education. That does not mean they would not make really fantastic doctors or lawyers if they could afford to go to college. The words “You can’t”, have been apart of my mind set since day one. I was always told that it isn’t possible for me to be as smart as my sister, or on the same level of my brother who is special needs. Getting a job in a different occupations than what one received a degree seems to be easier than fighting the other 250 people applying for that one desired job. However, today over 15% of workers in these occupations have college degrees, along with 25% of retail workers. This proves how difficult it is to get a job in the area that a person studied in. The job market is more competitive that it has ever been. Also, the entry level positions that college graduates can get do not pay very well. A college graduate might be able to find a job in their desired field. However, it cannot pay the bills. So one might decide to be a taxi driver so they are able to pay their bills.

A person is more likely to be more successful in life when attaining a higher degree. They can pursue a successful career that they are passionate about. Higher education is beneficial because no matter what you choose to do it will always be there to back you up in the future. Having a college degree can help you with financial stability as well. But, in today’s world, does having a college degree mean you can get any job at any given place or time? Not always will you find jobs that need certain degrees to be placed in jobs. Many places prefer no degree than having one. Some jobs require something even higher. There are a few limitations on having higher education. Also, by having higher education, it does not necessarily mean a person knows everything. You may have little to no education and still learn and know more things than someone with higher education can. For example, in Blue-Collar Brilliance, Mike Rose; Rose’s mother had dropped out of school to help support her family in a diner. She did not need school or a degree to develop psychological skills. She knew how things worked in a person by socially connecting to them. “Her tip depended on how well she responded to these needs, and so she became adept at reading social cues and managing feelings, both the customers’ and her own.” (Rose). That goes to show that higher education is not always needed in workplaces that use more connection to humans

I have read an article "Is a College Degree Necessary" published by Los Angeles Times, and was written by Mike Rustigan in my English class. The author wrote about the number of dropouts from the university because they feel that school is not the appropriate place for them to learn the knowledge and life. They just want to work with your hands, and learn a skill by itself after high school. By contrast, President Obama wants every student has the opportunity to attend college to obtain higher education. President Obama told Congress, "We expect all our children not only to graduate from high school but to graduate from college and get a good-paying job." (Los Angeles Times). After reading the article, there is the big question in my mind is: Is there a college degree necessary for success? Some people may think that not going to college will not have much influence on their life, because going to college or a vocational school, finally, people still go to work and earn money to support themselves and their families, should a college degree is not important and necessary; as long as we have the ability and effort, we will succeed.
