1. What are the causes of the communication breakdown in the case study? Assess the flows of communication in the organization. There was a lack of communication on everyone’s part involved in the situation. There were several causes of the breakdown due to communication barriers. There was the perceptual barrier that Harry brought to the situation. Harry already had perceived the situation a certain way before he had talked to anyone. The experiences he had with getting the position filled had altered the way he perceived the event with Christina before he ever got the necessary information. The organization’s managerial philosophy, levels of hierarchy and relationships between the senders and receivers were also contributory factors. …show more content…
Why or Why not? Yes, and No. I did not approve the way he handled the situation with Christina. As, the leader, I think he should have called her into the office to have a face-to- face meeting. He should have mentioned to her that he noticed there was something different about her demeanor and ask was there something wrong. This would have opened up the lines for communication and allowed for feedback. Yes, I agreed with how he handled the situation with Ellen and Mary, instead of confronting them about the situation, he took the time to cool down. Harry also took the time to look at the situation from the other person point of view and tried to come up with a solution that worked for everyone involved.
3. What would have been the proper procedure for Mary to recruit Harry’s employee? Mary should have set up a meeting with Harry to discuss her interest in hiring Christina. Mary should have been open and forthcoming about the transfer. This could have given Mary and Harry the opportunity to negotiate the terms of the transfer. It is in your best interest to foster a cooperative atmosphere to increase the chances of a win-win outcome (Stark & Flaherty, 2004). Each person has different needs therefore, everyone could have benefitted from the transfer if they had been able to work together.
