Communication for Effective Leadership
Everyday in the workplace a person must interact with others in various forms of communication to complete their day. A leader must be able to strategically communicate with their employees, as well as overcome any communication barriers, in order to achieve a high-performance rate in the workplace. An example of a scenario that requires diplomatic communication, in my case, is a loss of work ethic amongst team members.
Communication Strategies
Communication is defined as “two-way process of reaching mutual understanding, in which participants not only exchange information, news, ideas and feelings but also create and share meaning. In general, communication is a means of connecting people or places. In business, it is a key function of management--an organization cannot operate without communication between levels, departments and employees,” (What is communication? Definition and meaning, 2016). This process of exchanging thoughts and emotions can be done through both verbal and non-verbal communication.
Asking Questions
One of the first steps to solving a problem in the workplace is to ask questions. Learning the viewpoint of another team member helps to create a solution and decide what specific changes need to be made to make a more successful work environment. In communication, Jeb Blount (2012) explains the five rules to be followed when asking questions:
