Communication is the key to growth and development of oneself, and relationships with others. Good relationships are normally forged over good communication skills. We all know of the popular saying, “No man is an island.” This means that human beings are social animals needing interaction, no man was born to be a loner. Without effective communication it would be impossible to survive in this cut-throat world. Therefore, it is a necessity to have good communication skills in order to relate well with other people.
COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY
There are two main reasons why we communicate:
• To gather relevant information from people.
• To elicit emotional support to people and in turn build mutually useful relationships.

This always tends to ruin relationships as it pushes people further and further way from them.

They often think that all failures are their fault. For instance, if a person failed to be promoted in a job he will say, “I knew I should have pitched myself harder and be more assertive. Maybe then I would have gotten the promotion.” vi) They dwell on the past
Polar thinkers find it hard to accept and let go of past mistakes, and concentrate on the future. They use words such as ‘should’ and ‘ought.’ For example, in the case of a failed job interview a polar thinker would say, “I should have spoken more clearly and with much more confidence.”
We should realize that the way we think affects how we act, in turn affecting our communication and relationships. There is no shame in recognizing that we have maxed out our potential. Our happiness cannot depend on other people, we determine our own happiness.
Steps to effective internal communication
These steps are used to help us grow. They can be summarized in the following acronym:

This being the first stage, one has to recognize their own strengths and also allow room for their shortcomings. It is important to admit your past mistakes
