2.4 It is important to respond to a person’s reactions when communicating so they know you are listening to them and to provide the correct response. It can help to empathise with a person and share understanding. To respond may help avoid a person becoming frustrated and upset. Good eye contact cannot be underestimated as you can get a true idea of a person’s feelings. Outcome 4 Understand how to overcome barriers to communication. 3.1 People from different backgrounds may use communication methods differently these may include the language they speak or the dialect they use. They may use different gestures, touch and mannerisms’. Also the volume, speed and pitch of a person’s voice would affect communication. Somebody who comes from a society that speaks quickly with a regional dialect would have difficulty being understood somewhere where they speak more slowly. In different culture gestures can mean different things. The gesture of holding two fingers up can either mean peace if the palm is facing out or if the palm is facing in can be offensive. An aggressive gesture of waving a closed fist in western countries means one is trying to pick a fight or is showing annoyance. In Asian countries this will definitely get you into fist fight. 3.2
People communicate for different reasons, to portray their feelings, emotions, pain, opinions, etc. To work with children and young people, communication plays a very important part to make sure that the best provision is created for all. There are many different reasons why people communicate. People communicate to share information and express a need. They communicate to learn new things and develop learning. People also communicate to discuss a situation, negotiate or make a point.
Effective communication may have a positive impact on individuals lives as it will give them confidence. The more confidence they gain the more willing they will be to try new things. They will have more self-esteem and will be able to apply for work. Effective communication can give them a better social life, they will want to spend time with others and less likely to become withdrawn and depressed.

4.7 People from different backgrounds may use communication methods in different ways, for example people from different religious beliefs may find some gestures different so you should always make sure you are not doing something that may offend them, and you may also have a language barrier here. Also you may have someone who is deaf or hard of hearing they communicate in different ways, by sign language or pictures to help you understand their needs.
Within the adult social care setting communication is used to convey information, this could be with the client about what they want to wear or eat, relatives and friends of the client who might want to know if any food products need replenishing or if there has been an accident and colleagues or other members of the multi-disciplinary team who might need information on past health information or daily routine.
Communication is all about sharing, what one person says isn’t always what the other person hears or interprets. Where people from the same backgrounds with similar experiences will see and hear things in a similar way, where as one person from a certain culture entertaining a visitor from another culture or country may say something which is totally misinterpreted from the visitor. This can be down to language barriers, slang/jargon etc, an example of this would be an English man saying in

For example, it is seen as polite and respectful to make eye contact when speaking to someone in Western culture but in other cultures, for example in East Asia, it can be seen as rude and defiant.

The Oxford Dictionary defines communication as “The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium ”. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behaviour . The Collins Dictionary defines it as the imparting or exchange of information, ideas, or feelings . The Business Dictionary’s definition of communication paints a bigger picture of the act, defining it as a two-way process of reaching mutual understanding, in which participants not only exchange (encode-decode) information, news, ideas and feelings, but also create and share meaning . With these in mind, it is easy to define communication as the giving, receiving or exchanging of information, opinions or ideas so that the message is completely understood by everybody involved . In Health and Social Care, Communication is extremely important to ensure that the right message is passed on to the right person in the right manner, based on their needs and preference, to prevent misunderstanding and to maximize on the smooth operation of the organisation ultimately to foster a save environment for all the persons involved, service users and providers. To help understand the concept of communication and how it works better, various scholars have developed theories of communication.
Effective communication is the communication easy to understand quickly. Creating positive relationships is beneficial to everyone involved. Using effective communication techniques such as: talking directly to the person, using understandable language, showing positive body language, caring and friendly behaviour, setting clear and realistic boundaries, attentive listening and showing respect and being open minded towards possible replies, leads to better relationships, builds trust, self- confidence and ability to interact with others. It also works the other way. It is important to build positive relationships as it promotes better communication as generally people communicate easier with those they trust and have positive past interactions.
