Critical Thinking : Moral Reasoning

In my own point of view of what I think critical thinking means is a guide to make a logical decision based on a number of variables such as factual evidence and credible resources that can create valid statements behind the action of thought process including being open-mindedness and demonstrating the differences of valid evidence and assuming to make and communicate their point of view to be understood by the others in a conversation.

Critical thinking has an important role in learning and development because if properly executed it allows me to see the entire situation instead of the individual task. I plan to take the necessary actions to determine the task with open eyes and an unbiased approach. Remembering the facts about the situation can help in resolving the issue. Understanding by reiterating the problem can help me further comprehend. Applying then analyzing the tasks and or situations so I can prepare the steps to come to the evaluation. I can see if the resources are accurate and thorough. The last thing I should be able to do to assure my critical thinking skills are complete is a form of creating. I take all the information of this situation, and use it in my final resolution. These steps are crucial in the ability to think clearly and not be clouded by biased information.

Critical thinking and ethical decision making are crucial for academic success as well as career success. Both critical thinking and ethical choices allow an appreciation of diverse points of view using analytic approaches, create a tolerance for and an appreciation of ambiguity, allow for creative problem-solving, and give the ability to integrate knowledge from diverse viewpoints into unified ideas and strategies. To better understand how critical thinking and ethics impacts our success, we must analyze these skills and how they relate to us academically, and to our future careers.

Critical thinking is one of the most important traits that a person can have in their day to day lives. It involves the person to have the ability to ascertain claims and make judgments based on well-support evidence or logic rather than anecdote or emotion. There are 8 protocols that critical thinkers’ exhibit in their day to day lives in order to become better at their craft.

“In a world where critical thinking skills are almost scarce, repetition effectively advances the cognitive portion of the brain. It helps a thing get processed as truth. We used to call it unsubstantiated buy-in, or considered it a belief without proof. It only thrives in a society where thinking for one 's self is dejected. This indeed is how we lost our humanity, our traditions and most importantly our America.”

While in middle school and high school, many of our teachers use to teach us about adolescents and warn us about our hormones and sex, but they never really touch on the topic about our mental change and how moral reasoning would change in such an unnoticeable manner. I honestly believed that I still had the same mind set from high school, until I learned about moral reasoning and watch the video of the three different age groups and it showed each mind set and their moral reason for the situation that was given. After watching that video, I reflected on the memories of middle and high school and realized, that I made a lot of dumb choices that I’m not proud of.

This research focuses on the importance of moral behavior and its relations with critical thinking. In order to do this I chose to view a certain situation that occurred and had the qualities to prove and discuss my main topic. I chose to use a recent story that occurred during the 2016 NFL Draft, in which a player by the name Laremy Tunsil was publicly humiliated due to him going against his moral behavior. His agent, family, and himself all had to find a way to quickly and critically think how to fix their problem. Through social media and television Mr. Tunsil found himself defending his moral behavior and redeeming himself in order to be drafted.

Our ethical beliefs can affect our critical thinking, which should be used on a regular basis to help us grow both personally and professionally. And as we progress through our different professional fields we must not lose sight of our ethical responsibilities but this does not need to be at odds with critical thinking which is defined as; “disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded, and informed by evidence”. With a definition like that it is clear that critical thinking can be very useful resource in our professional life. Now when you add the definition of ethics which is “that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions” you can see how the two may conflict.

“More men graduating from baccalaureate and higher degree programs” is not the best answer because associate degree programs produce the most new graduates.

I think critical thinking is important because it means reasoning, evaluating, analyzing, decision-making, and problem-solving. We need critical thinking in our everyday life, for us to make any little decision we need to think about it wisely, and how it will affect us. Someone with critical thinking skills can understand the logical links between ideas. Critical thinking is an analysis or style of judgement that helps an individual make a decision or solve a problem. Critical thinking plays a significant role in the ethical process as it is the method in which we decide for ourselves whether or not something is right, wrong or morally ethical. In following, we form an opinion from our observations, facts, inferences and assumptions which in turn creates arguments to protect our opinions. Now that both sides have been established, those stakeholders who favor and those who oppose the policy in question, each of their argument 's evidence and reasoning will be analyzed. The corresponding pages which follow will provide an understanding of each side through three developed sections: a critical analysis, moral reasoning, and a tentative solution. The critical analysis will thoroughly measure to what level an argument 's authoritative, accuracy, reliability, precision, applicability, and etc. is able to represent their claims. At the same time the critical analysis includes a judgement call on whether or not a side 'wins ' or 'loses ' each of their arguments based upon the strength and weakness of the argument 's claims and evidence. The moral reasoning section will then secondary the value of each side 's evidence, and focus on analyzing each side 's moral reasoning, or rather, evaluating what "values, obligations, consequences, and normative principles" present reasonableness to their position on morality. Following these two sections of analysis, a conclusion will be made on which of the two sides makes an overall stronger, more conclusive and moral argued solution to the normative question.
