“Counseling’s focus on development, prevention, wellness, and treatment makes it attractive to those seeking healthy life-stage transitions and productive lives” (pearson). In the early 1900’s, there was a movement within the counseling profession that centered on promoting the prevention and the objects that provided purpose in a person’s life. The idea was to help individuals avoid problems and “focus on wellness, development, mindfulness, meaningfulness, and remediation of mental disorders” (pearson). This was the beginning of one of the three philosophies that comprises the key philosophies of counseling.
Section I focuses on resolving ethical issues with other counselors. This section promotes seeking consultation when necessary and to solve ethical problems with all parties involved in the matter. In conclusion, sections D, F and I provide a framework for counselors to refer to when they are facing ethical
As a counselor learns and practices the code of ethics, he or she will grow and mature as a professional. In my experience, it is not uncommon for ethical situations to arise in session; however, counselors must keep in perspective their role and responsibility as not to project onto clients or allow for countertransference. When faced with ethical decision making; a counselor is not required to make an independent or isolated decision. Ethical challenges are a part of the profession for counselors; therefore it is common practice to consult with colleagues or supervisors. An ethical counseling professional demonstrates sound judgement and determines the best outcomes for clients in complex
The counseling profession has a broad spectrum of possibilities when it comes to choosing which psychological approach to take. The field of counseling takes many forms and offers many career options, from school counseling to marriage and family therapy. As there are numerous styles in existence, it is important to be aware of the many approaches available to take. For my research two psychological approaches, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Person-Centered Psychology, will be critically analyzed and discussed in depth in order to compare the techniques as well as effectiveness of each.
There are a number of historical theories in counseling which have been used to assist clients during the counseling process. This week’s readings provided quite a few concepts from counseling theories which were valuable and interesting to me. Many coincided with my views on the reasons for people’s behavior and human nature. These concepts are also meaningful to me for various reasons. Each of these psychological concepts might be useful when having a counseling relationship with a client in a variety of ways.
This semester has brought about many presentations when it comes to the multiple counseling therapist can use in our society, with the many counseling theories for therapist to use, the effectiveness for of treating many different conditions varies with everyone. This paper will be a reflection on what I have learned over the course of this semester for this class. I will explore one psychological condition that a counselor would typically encounter and discusses how it ties into many theories to help that specific one. I will also expire many other counseling theories that can relate to assisting that phycological condition. The last thing I will discuss in this paper is what therapies do I feel the most comfortable using in a professional
In the counseling profession, situations may be come about in the areas of ethical, professional, or legal concerns. New Counselors can become frustrated by the lack of dilemmas they can face in the field of mental health. Counselors must take into consideration the ethical, professional, and legal considerations they can or may encounter. Counselors use the ACA guide as rule book of professional standards of moral duty and obligation. The Ethics guide provides a frame work that centers on the counselor’s conduct in their work, accountability, and professionalism. The codes are written in broad terms to serve as starting point for making decisions in the professional field.

I’m aware of my own bias and assumptions. I will ensure that apply ethical decision-making in all my decisions with a client. As a counselor, I must ensure that I am health and mentally well to help my client. If am not I can do more hurt than help. I will never take my work home with me. If I randomly do self-actualizion of myself, I think I would be find.
Ethical concerns among the field of psychology aren’t taboo, especially dating back before the 1980’s. The Stanford Prison Experiment, conducted in 1971, is considered one of the most notorious experiments conducted at Stanford University as well as in the realm of social psychology as a whole. The superintendent of the experiment, Dr. Phillip Zimbardo, has faced an ethical confliction after the experiment was terminated. The purpose of the experiment was to evaluate how innocent individuals would react in a mock-jail scenario, both Zimbardo and his colleagues claimed they never expected such an outcome that occurred. Though many appraise the scandalous experiment, some view it as unprincipled and disreputable.
For over the last sixty years according to our text, Ethics in Counseling and Psychotherapy, it has been evident that participation in counseling and psychotherapy proves to be an effective intervention for relieving emotional distress, improving interpersonal relationships, and increasing overall general satisfaction with life (Welfel, 2016). However, when a patient feels their life is coming to an end, whether because of detrimental physiological or geriatric concerns, clinical counseling professionals will have to face personal moral and ethical issues that will arise. Personally, working in clinical counseling, I will inevitably be faced with clients that might have suicidal tendencies or have thought out rational suicide while being
Whilst working in a remote area I observed a year nine indigenous student (Lorena Bannard) and a teacher (Bill James), alone together after school hours. I considered this could be an unprofessional situation. I spoke to Bill later regarding the situation and he replied, “I’m helping her with some family problems, and I’m concerned about the effect it’s having on her school work”. I suggested he refer Lorena to the Guidance Officer.

Overall, this class affirmed what has been learned thus far in almost five years of Psychology. Granted, this was the foundation of the field of Clinical Mental Health Counseling, however, almost every section recapped a knowledge that might not have been as secure mentally as it is presently. It allowed for review, maintenance, and even a more in-depth take on all subjects related to our field, yet, did it in a concise and compact fashion. The knowledge gained was greatly appreciated as this class and the subjects gave me a confidence that I really might know what I am doing.
