Define Community Analysis

A community is a group of people who live in the same area, interact with each other, and share certain norms and values. A community is defined as a locality-based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting societal institutions, informal groups, and aggregates that are interdependent and whose function or expressed intent is to meet a wide variety of collective needs (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012).

There are different ways to define ‘community.’ The most basic and literal definition is: a group of people. However, it can also branch out into different types, it can be specific and refer to a religious community or sometimes a sense of community. The Ma Tzu pilgrimage in Taiwan fulfills all of the above. Every year, four to five million Ma Tzu followers gather to participate in the old ritual. Perhaps the reason why the practice is so extensive--not only in terms of the amount of followers but also in its depiction of community--is because the belief system is very flexible. This flexibility allows the belief to conform in a way that best fits individual people but it is also able to stretch its influence to a large number of people and as a result, ties everyone together into a closely knit community.

A community is a group of people that share a common or similar characteristic with each other. Some communities can also consist of people living together or practice worship. My essay will include the communities that I am part of which are my dance, school and church communities.

The definition of community when I google it, is “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” I would describe community as a group of people who have common goals, thoughts, or interests.

My biology lab focuses on the idea of community but first, what is community? My definition of a community is a group of people that work together, using each individual’s specific skills, for the betterment of the whole. We are all a part of a community, whether we realize it or not. One may not feel welcomed with a particular community, however, that does not mean one is not a part of it. Many may feel that they are not members of a community because of their physical features, racial background, gender, sexual orientation, culture, beliefs, etc.. Nevertheless, every human being has experienced multiple situations that distinguish what they identify themselves with. At most times, this type of individuality is shown through personal experiences within our community. Many may surround themselves with other people that give them a sense of compatibility. One should perceive that a community relates to an individual 's way of life. It can be argued that a community is more than the cliche definition that is described as a group of individuals who live in the same area. The readings: “A letter to Marty" (by N/A) and "Who gets to graduate?" by Paul Tough, prove that a community can have a strong impact on the majority of an individual’s life. From my experience, I realized that a community is not only about one’s experiences but is about what one identifies themselves with, which can expand to many aspects. My community has impacted my life in terms of my goals, aspirations, cultures, morals, values, which unfold to ways of how I identify myself.

Community for me, is feeling connected, accepted, and at home. It is where everyone is working together for a mutual cause, and having fun doing it. It is not so much a place to me, as it is a feeling. I can go to any town, city, or “community” but it does not necessarily take a place in my heart as much as the sense of community I have experienced before.

What do you think of when you hear about a community? My first thought was that a community had to be a small group of people that share a common interest, but why can’t a community be a large group of people with things in common? I understand it can be. A community can be a large or small quantity of people that have any one thing in common. When I hear the word community, I see various of images. I see numerous numbers of people with such a variety, but coming together as one with commonalities. So, when I was asked to write about a community in my life I had no idea how to choose my topic, there is so many options, however, when we were assigned to read the article “Beyond the Pleasure Principle” written by Ann Hulbert I got my inspiration to write about my generation because I do believe my generation stands out from the past generations.

Community is an elusive term, known by everyone yet somewhat difficult to get a firm grasp of, its relatively vague and many different norms and values fall under the direct distinction of community. Talcott Parsons describes community a collective of which the members share a common territorial area as their base of operations for daily activities. Every individual has their own idealised version of what a community is and what is should look like. There are many theoretical definitions of what a community is and just as many glorified versions of what a community should be. Anthony P. When thinking about a community, it doesn’t matter what forms within however on a much greater scale. A community doesn’t just consist of buildings, in fact, a community is brought together through the use of three different concepts; emotional belonging, connections within the community and thirdly relationships between one’s self. These allow an individual to make a difference and allow for others to become inspired. To me, community means coming together to ensure one feels a sense of belongingness which in turns allows individuals to be themselves. Just like the quote “small acts, when multiplied by millions of people can transform the world” (Howard Zinn) This displays that when a community comes together as one that small act turns into something much more greater which results in a positive atmosphere.

I believe a community is a group of people who live in a common location. The community is filled with people who have and share similar interests, income, ethnic backgrounds, and religious beliefs. There are many different communities throughout the United States that vary in their interest, beliefs, backgrounds, education, etc. I believe this plays a part in affecting the community’s health care, jobs, resources, etc. For example, there could be a wealthy community made up of doctors and lawyers who receive the best housing and the best health care. However, there could be a community within fifteen minutes of those same doctors and lawyers who are hard blue-collar workers that receive adequate health care and housing. This also could be the same for a community who is considered poor and has no health care and little opportunities for housing and jobs.

Community is a broad concept within the social sciences (sociology specifically) and one that is used frequently. It is one of the most vague and ambiguous terms, yet is commonplace to everyday life. The core concept of the term refers to social bonds and connections that exist between individuals in a particular geographical location. However vague the term may be, ‘Community’ as a construct is indeed of great importance when attempting to understand the impact of an era of social, political, economic, cultural and technological change.

The word community maintains an assortment of meanings for each of us. These meanings are composed from various life experiences within our communities. To me, my communities include my family, friends, schools, work, and the town I live in. My communities have had an influence on who I have become as a person and continue to influence me on a daily basis.
