According to Williams, 2014, “when companies look for employees who would be good managers, they look for individuals who have technical skills, human skills, conceptual skills and the motivation to manage,” (Williams, p. 14). In watching the “Camp Bow Wow video,” the three broad management skills used are conceptual skills, human skills, and technical skills. From what was stated, the managers at Camp Bow Wow utilized all three of these management skills. Candace and Sue both used conceptual skills in figuring out tough predicaments that were not manageable and then turned them into manageable situations. As well, making sure that the new hires are trained correctly with promoting and mentoring new staff. Both of managers also use human skills. The managers make sure they motivate their employees by communicating with each other.

Technical Skills refer to be as being knowledgeable proficient in a specific type of work or activity.

It is suggested by various text books and management tutors alike, that the mastering of the four functions of management; Planning, controlling, organising and leading along with developing technical, human and conceptual skills, should go some way to allowing a manager some degree of success in the field of management. Of course, having skills is just part of being an effective manager, these skills and functions must be communicated in a way that fellow managers and workers can understand and act upon.

In order to find out the how the managers become more efficient, many researcher devoted themselves to develop theories on what exactly skills or abilities does managers need. In 1955, Robert L. Katz developed three essential managerial skills or competencies: technical, human and conceptual. He also believed that different levels of managers need different skills within the organization. More specially, Katz thought that top managers need conceptual skills, middle managers need human skills and first line managers need technical skills. This essay will argue that first line manager not only need technical skills, but also need human skills(interpersonal skills), and will compare different views from researchers who support Katz’s ideas.

During the time I worked for Javelin Technical Training Center, I had a Director of Education (DOE) who had two of the three skilled approach described by Northhouse, (2013). He had human and conceptual and needed assistance in the technical approach. As I read chapter three in Northouse, (2013) book, he discussed the importance of all three skills; however, it also depends on the management level that current person is in. The Director of Education (DOE) was part of middle management which required all three skills. However, his conceptual and human skills were effective which allowed co-workers and upper management to dismissed his lack in technical skills.

These skills are important in the workplace. Developing information, analyzing data, evaluating facts, perspectives, and formulating support point of view and conclusions. Conceptual skills involve the ability to critically analyze. Having the ability to come with a strategy to reduce patient complaints about food service. Interpersonal skills are those that a manager communicates with and work well with other individuals. A manager who communicates with subordinates and a manager counsels an employee.
