They help us to understand children, how they react to things/situations, their behaviour and the ways they learn. The purpose of this assignment is to closely observe the development of a child through an interview and apply the theories and concept of child development in his particular cultural and educational context. I selected the child who lives in my neighborhood for the interview and began with seeking the permission from his parents. The child’s name is ‘Abdullah’ and he is seven years old. He lives with his family in Terre Haute and his family consists of parents and two sisters. Abdullah goes to Sugar Grove Elementary School in the Terre Haute city along with his two sisters and he is in grade 2. The interview was conducted at his home and I ensured his convenience. He was cooperative and provided insightful responses to the questions and he provided significant detail in the interview. I was able to track his development stages and connect it to different theories of Developmental Psychology including psychoanalytical perspectives and Piaget’s stages of development. In the following paragraphs, I will explain my observations about Abdullah’s development in the light of developmental theories with special focus on cognitive, social, linguistic, and emotional development followed by making connections between his socioeconomic and cultural background and development. Lastly, I will conclude paper by highlighting that the observations during the interview can facilitate my future practice as a teacher.

For this research project, I chose to interview my very own daughter (Alaina). She is a 7-year-old first grader who lives with her mother full-time. She has one older sister who lives in another state. Alaina is an active and inquisitive young lady. She attends year-round schooling and in her free time, she participates in Tae Kwon Do and basketball.
After observing a nine month old child for this Child Observation paper, the author of this paper has taken copious notes during the session. The purpose of this paper is recognizing the biological, cognitive and psychosocial development of the child. My first method that I am going to evaluate is longitudinal studies. Longitudinal studies is a form of research or survey which is mostly done by observations, this is done usually over a period of time. The same child or group of children will be observed over a period of time doing a variety of things. When children are being observed they are not allowed to be interrupted by adults at any time. Longitudinal studies help look at a child’s development during their whole life from being babies to adulthood. It can tell us how they are developing and are they reaching their mile stones for their age group as well as how they are learning. How they are progressing in different areas of development, different parts in a child’s health and wellbeing.

Everyday we are developing no matter our age, but it is how we develop children that will tell a tremendous amount an individual. How a child developments is fundamentally important at a young age as it affects all aspect of their lives once the child matures. Developmental aspects can be assessed by technology. Technology is growing everyday in our society, it is becoming a big factor in the use of early childhood education.
The Child engages in active and rapid change in development, thus different aspects and stages are studied using different techniques and methods, depending on the depth and aims of study. There are many methods applied to studying children, the methodology is selected specific to the researchers purpose and aims. The most common methods are observations, in particular, naturalistic observation, interviews, correlation study, case study/single case design, longitudinal study. Cross cross-cultural studies are often incorporated, which offers a critical analysis and a ethnocentric view. All methodology must be ethically approved of, and follow the BPS guidelines, there is often ethical issues in developmental research.
