Introduction:
In all of the stages of life, there are always positivities and negativities, a gap year between school and university it will either improve or worsen a teenagers career prospects. So as we can see a gap year is a handful of opportunities. Through the year that has past, the thinks that stigmatized all students that have had a gap year the most important are the optimistic rather than the negatives ones. However, if you do not use your year of time gracefully it might ruin your future career prospects. There are perspectives such as improving yourself, therefore liability, adulthood and learning new skills is a major part of the positives in a gap year. The disadvantages of having a gap year are losing a variety of time on the uncertain situation that might mislead the right road. In a gap year, people can improve plenty of positive skills such as liabilities, adulthood and learning new skills. Since the student is currently learning some independence, this is a great time where they can get to know themselves better. During a gap year, students have the opportunity to get to know them as well as learn what they want to do in life (Ma, 2014). Back in 2013, there were interviews given to many students at different universities, about their experience with a gap year. A student by the name of Eden Full, Princeton University, stated that since he was young, he was always on the path to success. With a gap year, it had given him time to learn some new skills and explore some new interests that he had never had before (Lazaro, 2013). Another student by the name of Tiffany Yanagida, a computer science major at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, stated that a gap year had given her some time to find out her future career path. This was something that she had no idea about at the young age of 18 (Lazaro, 2013). This is a great time to have fun, build up your social network, and go out and enjoy the world.

There is a contradiction in the mind of teenagers which has been difficult to transcend. The issue of making right decision on the activities they are to embark on and whose counsel to follow has been of high importance to teenagers. Teenagers in the present age find themselves in a tight situation with decision making in that their school psychologists made them realise that being happy is based on the ability to make friends and the development of skills. Meanwhile, teachers and parents advised that, happiness lies on competing and outperforming others.
The course was designed for students in the second year of college and is set over a period of 15 weeks with 2 hour sessions. The aim of this course is to provide students with the necessary life skills needed for life after college. This course also provides students with the skills and abilities to live independently. As many first year students at university drop out due to academic and sometimes financial issues, this course helps to tackle some of these problems. The course discusses how to find a place to live at university, remain safe, keep personal items safe and how to interact and make friends at university which leads to the summative assessment of a come dine with me theme. In addition the course covers health and fitness, the importance of a healthy diet and this will also assist in stress management.
It is time to make a decision regarding what to do after high school. The most popular decision is to go right into college. Some students say they would like to take a year off before going to college. This is called a Gap Year, meaning they have a gap in between education. Some do well, and prepare themselves for college, while others do not. Those that do take a year off have time to explore what life has to offer, and takes advantage of the deferment application, become a better person.
As one can see in the past staying in school was mandatory and people were looked down if one did not finish school. Now in days’ students are quick to drop out and more parents are allowing it to happen. The rate of students who attend school and drop- out is tremendously high. As a student who thought about dropping out due to many encounters in life, but chose to stay in school and get an education changed who I am today. After all, each individual has a different perspective of whether high school should be mandatory both know it can only better one self. Attending high school will have challenges along with, but make it worth going for.

The student is now thought of as a responsible piece of their development. This revised version also proposed a comprehensive suite of student services that represented thirty-three functional areas. It was mentioned earlier that the focus was not on the students’ development but here the shift has taken place. Why do people take a gap year? Since all of us are students, I’m pretty sure you would like to hear and know about what a gap year can do to us.
However, gap year is not as fantastic as it might seem. Gap year can make a student lose their flow of things. They will not be so willing to study as they don’t want to go back to the stress and rigor of academic life. It takes the student away from classroom experience. Gap year means that the student will lose a year of learning, of education. It makes you fall further behind your peers; this can put you at a disadvantage particularly if one is going to med school or law school. Additionally some gap years can be expensive especially if one is traveling. This could make college harder to afford. All in all gap year has its pros and cons, but it’s in the will of the student to say how fit it is for them.
This essay will examine how social skills and personal attributes help first year university students in the way to academic success. Glogowska, Young and Lockyer (as cited in Richardson, King, Garrett & Wrench, 2012, p.88) noted that many first year students decide to leave university as the consequence of health issue and academic challenges. Concern that academic skills are not enough for students to deal with the problem of transition period and students need more skills and abilities to reach their academic goals.
Though there are many advantages to taking a gap year, there are just as many disadvantages. People may find themselves unwilling to go back to school, they may lose opportunities for scholarships, or they might not have enough money to support the activities they replace school with. Even their social life could be affected. With all of these negative aspects one may ask, why would anyone risk taking a gap year?
As Greg Kristof, a gap year taker and now sophomore at Harvard University, stated in the interview that I conducted, “In America it seems that college is a huge rite of passage when actually it’s a huge investment”.
Most students are not over the pressures of being a senior in high school. That’s why the gap year should be taken to release all the stresses of high school. Most students cannot take being stressed out so decide to wait. These students are not capable of attending college due to their mental stability. Being a college student directly from high school could take a great toll on a person physical and mental state.
In this paper, emphasis has been directed on the success experienced during the semester, the hardships, outstanding findings and recommendations. Success during the semester was contributed to availability of a course syllabus, group works and an engaging professor.
