This activity helped the whole class get out of their seats and start to really connect with each other and spend time getting to know one another on another level. One of the lessons I took away was to be open in asking for help when I need it. I often find it difficult to ask for help because I feel I am bothering others and I should figure it out on my own. I possibly need to let go of my own will power and determination and let another give me suggestions. Another aspect I would like to take with me is all the activities that are so simple in organizing team work and opportunities to open up to others. Steven was very prepared with games that would help us work as a unit, as well as opening up to others about our lives. I would also …show more content…
When Steven first said that we could ask for help I immediately pushed that notion aside and put full faith in my ability to find it myself. I know that after we graduate it will only become that much harder to ask for help in our career life, so before I leave Western I want to be comfortable in asking for support without feeling like I let myself down in some way. I believe this would be a problem that could be overcome by anyone just by being open about it, and realizing you might have this problem. When in meetings you could give the floor over to others and ask questions that might have them open up. Whether you are asking if anyone doesn’t understand, have any ideas or feel concerned about anything, this could help open up others to the option of needing to ask for assistance. You can also have open discussions about asking for help and what it means to the group. In our phase 5 careers I want to be able to build a culture with my employee where asking for help is encouraged. To accomplish this I will attempt to ask SMARTly, not assume what others know or don’t know, and try to ask the right questions. When asking for help you also want to make sure they are not busy and you have their full attention to really convey the need that you would like to make clear. Overall I am glad that we took the time to participate in the ropes course to pick up all these lessons that can be brought into phase 5 with us. I have never really thought of how
As well, another activity that I thought was interesting and I would use in my future classroom was called the Fallout Shelter. This project made you think personally about your views and what you consider as important. This project asked each person to pick ten survivors from a list to put in a fallout shelter to protect them from the nuclear war that has occurred. Each person had a description about themselves that would help a person decide who to pick and who not to pick. Once I picked my ten and then got into a small group to share, I realized that everyone had a different top ten. I believe this assignment was to show us that each person has their views on what they think is important, and it also showed us how we could judge someone
I liked that we each had partners. We could work with them in case we needed any help. I also liked how the steps were set up. They would carefully direct us to success. The last thing I liked was how each of the students subconsciously made the project into a contest and we all started to do our best. This gave us motivation to have the best paper airplane in the class.
Through completing this activity, I learned more than I have with any other activity I have done thus far while earning my Education Specialist degree. I had to observe a teacher and provide constructive feedback using the Framework for Teaching. This observation included a pre-conference where the teacher told me what she wanted me to pay particular attention to. It required that I observe in real-time, rather than simply using a video where I can pause frequently. I then had to analyze the data I collected during the observation, in order to determine strengths and areas for improvement that I shared during the post-conference. The teacher was a master teacher and thought the lesson went very well. She was shocked when I had some ideas for how to improve her instruction. I mentioned that students seemed fidgety, and she could incorporate more cooperative structures to get students more active in their learning. I also thought she needed cooperative roles for students when they completed their group work, that way everyone was accountable for the work.
Write a brief reflection on the activity (no more than 3 pages). What did you learn about yourself and others? What implications might this have on your own classroom practice?
The Learning Beyond the Classroom event I attended was called Community Plunge. When I attended this event we were all put into small groups to volunteer around the Ypsilanti Community. The group I was put into went to Fuller Park to volunteer at a community pool, at an organization called Give 365. At the community pool my group and I helped the organization close down their pool for the summer. We did things such as; move chairs, picnic tables, trash cans, and take down their large signs. This was a lot of work and I was glad we could help this amazing organization take less time focusing on clean up so they could focus more on working in the community. In this essay I will explain what I learned during this event, how it relates to
I think what I enjoyed the most about this course was the fact that I got to learn about all of the different factors that impact or are relevant in order to really understand diversity. I also founded interesting how much understanding this concept really affects your life and those that surround you. I really also enjoyed how we were able to comment on each other’s post, and give our own opinion or feedback on the discussion of the week. I think that this was a great idea because we saw who had similar points of views, who agreed or disagree and some even gave us some words of encouragement. It was just good to communicate with others on the topics of discussion for the week, and after all it was necessary since the main focus of this course
I found this workshop to be beneficial because I learned different strategies to teach and to make a difference in the way students learn particularly in reading. I also learned how to make a lesson plan using the elements of Metacognition. We also did a lot of cooperative learning and how to make the lessons engaging and interesting to students. I also
I really like the one-on-one times I had with the senior citizens there. In addition, I learned more about senior citizen’s social habits from participating in this project. In class we talked about some of their social issues on how they may become disconnected to the society, and I notice most of them know what’s going on in the world since they watch the news. On the other hand, there are some that don't and always talk about the past. In addition, those senior citizens just would talk to you about events in the past, and never mention what going on in society
This week in class something that stood out to me was the “pageant”. I think that this activity was a really good way to get us out of out comfort zones. I would never be presenting or talking to my class by choice. We also finished watching Poverty Inc. I really enjoy learning more about the topic of poverty because I feel like we are only given the basics of the topic normally. I think the activities that get us out of our comfort zones are teaching me some life skills for my future.
I have learned a lot from the service learning project, I think that I can be used in my classes in the future. I have learned a lot about looking at individual’s strengths and adapting the process to fit their needs instead of hoping that the individual will change. I think that I could still improve upon this for the future, because it can be such a complicated task to do. From watching how upfront Melissa was about her expectations for the project, I learned how I need to be in future group projects if I were going to be the leader. To become a high performing team, I need to say my own expectations from the start.
My experience of going to the ropes course was very enjoyable because it was a change of scenery from the college life and I got to be with the people who I first met here when I got to Elon. Since the ropes course adventure was later in the year, compared to others, we sort of already had a strong bond as a group. For me, it was amazing to see how far we have come as a group and as individuals since we have arrived at Elon. I remember when we all first met and barely knew each other’s names and now we were able to trust one another while being blindfolded at the ropes course.
Prior to completing Skip Downing’s “On Course Self Assessment,” I was starting to realize one of my most sabotaging behaviors. I find it incredibly difficult to say a three-word phrase. When it comes to assisting others, I have no problem lending a helping hand, but I cannot tell anyone that “I need help.” In writing this paper I hope to recognize the roots of my problem and adopt a plan to aid me in overcoming this negative behavior.
The Challenge work was a great opportunity to get to know each and everyone of my classmates. It involved activities that I never knew even existed like the jump rope challenge and the marble challenge. Each activity required the class to work as a team and to come up with different strategies so that we could move onto the next activity. Even though these lessons were made for fun they each had a purpose. The first few activities like stretches were so that we could get to know our classmates. Then we went onto doing the egg, chicken, and hawk activity, which was also so that we could get to know each other. After that we split into two different groups and got to know them. We started with stories that occurred in our lives. Then moved onto
I felt like having the focus of a day be on class and social structures is important. Often times we see things on the news and in our community, and it can be hard to make sense of them. Having a discussion and several activities that pertain to these issues can help young people understand the background behind it. For example,
There have always been organizations that provide help for the needy. Now the economy is going through a downward spiral giving these institutions a greater importance in helping the lives of those who need it. Miami County residents have seen firsthand that some people who live in this area really need the help. The statistical evidence shows that Miami County, Indiana is being affected by the economy. The average salary of a resident in Peru, Indiana ends up being $28,487. (Indiana) That number may not seem profound, but when you have a family to support, the budget gets tight. The normal wage annually for a resident in the state of Indiana is $45,434. (Indiana) That makes it roughly 38% more money than what Miami
