1. What are three things you learned about research methods in this video (100 words)? There were four research methods that were used in this video. The four methods were the scientific method, psychometric research, psychological research, and experimental research. I learned something about each method. The scientific method is a series of procedures such as hypothesis, experiment, and collecting data. The psychometric research method is a system of developing a standardized method of collecting data and assessing psychological phenomena. The psychological research method is a research that is conducted in unusual locations. The experimental research method is when many factors occur that can explain the operating visual effect. …show more content…
Daryl Bem, who works at Cornell University, shows an example of a card trick. He stated that he and Lisa have psychic communication. After Lisa picks a card and Dr. Daryl Bem confirms that the Jack of Diamonds was the card, he explains how his experiment was flawed. As a result, he began to analyze the experiment like a psychologist. First, the psychologist would have to make sure that the experiment was solely by chance. The chance in Dr. Bem's experiment was 1 out of 6. If the experiment is proven to have chance as a factor, then the second thing a psychologist would analyze is the procedural controls. If this was a psychologist's experiment, they would have separated Dr. Bem and Lisa. Psychologists do this to rule out other possible hypotheses.
4. Do polygraph tests work? Explain why or why not (50 words) No, polygraph tests do not work. Even though the people who are taking the polygraph test are asked controlled questions, the polygraph test can still be manipulated. The polygraph tests only measure heart rate, breathing and sweating. The problem with this is that a racing heart or heavy breathing may constitute a liar, but also it may be the traits of a concerned citizen and vice versa.
5. Explain why knowing about research methods and being able to complete a research project will be beneficial to you in your education and career (50
As you review the basic steps of research, describe difficulties you have had in conducting basic research and presenting your conclusions.
The article "Is A Polygraph Test Admissible as Evidence" states, "some polygraph administrators, particularly in law enforcement, are given training on how to induce a false positive response," which implies that even the police have ways to trick the exams ("Is A"). The test can be tricked by the way examiners ask or the way they word questions. Honest people fail because they are more nervous about the real questions that the 'control' questions. There are even websites that teach how to beat the test, for instance "Polygraph FAQ" states, "the key to beating a polygraph exam is 1) to make no damaging admissions and 2) to subtly augment one's physiological responses to the 'control' questions ("Polygraph FAQ"). There are multiple places that you can find ways to pass. Some places even have full out, in person classes on tricking and passing polygraph tests. Someone could be lying through their teeth, but if they can stay calm during the test, they can pass because of the tricks that can be
List three things from your research that you feel are important to share about your topic:
Research can be a very scary topic when it is first introduced to a class, and I was that scary student. Research to me was like learning how to swim for the first time with a life vest on, and my heart beating 100 miles per hour because I’m so afraid. Taking off my life vest and diving into this research course has been very rewarding for me. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time. It has open my eyes up to a variety of ways I can start and conduct my research. Research is not so scary anymore. In this paper, I’m going to tell you about the things that I have learned and perfected while taking this course.
To begin with, this class has helped me understand more about carrying out my own research. Initially, I thought carrying out research was all about getting ideas from google and making conclusions. However, now I am aware that research involves understanding the topic given, analyzing various sources that relates to the topic and critiquing the sources. This also entails
Share your approach to synthesizing the evidence. What were the variables of interest you identified?
Describe how you have felt about the topic of research and any changes in viewpoint you are experiencing.
The majority of the research regarding polygraphs conclude that while they are better than chance, they simply aren’t anywhere near as precise as many people claim. The primary issue is that polygraphs really measure arousal, not “lies”. There are many different reasons for the subject to be aroused outside of lying, such as anxiety, PTSD, nervousness, confusion, and withdrawal. There is no evidence that physiological reactions exist that are unique to deception. In fact, Dr. Saxe and Israeli psychologist Gershon Ben-Shahar (1999) note that, "it may, in fact, be impossible to conduct a proper validity study." In addition to the questionable scientific foundation of polygraph tests, there are a great many variables that can affect results as well. Tests are done in many different ways, purposes, and procedures, not to mention the influence that examiners, examinees, and situational factors have on the validity of the
In short, chapter 1 was about learning how research methodology can be useful in everyday life. Through the scientific method, the methods of tenacity, intuition, authority, rationalism, and empiricism we can develop a better understanding of information obtained. The scientific method, however, is the most acceptable way to answer questions because it allows us to find the most accurate answer. Through the scientific method our study is shown to be empirical, public and objective. When researching qualitative studies, you can expect narrative reports while quantitative studies will show numerical data.
It’s true that polygraph equipment can detect and measure the physiological reactions accurately but this does not imply that they can measure the lies accurately. Though a normal person lying, may show these reactions most of the time but it can’t be conclusive. It is not always true representation as they may be influenced by some conditional factors and also be controlled by some countermeasures. Most of the studies done on polygraph for lie detection is analog, i.e., they have been done in lab and these are not field based. Since, it is not possible to create the real field situation accurately in lab, accurate conclusion cannot be made from these and these can be treated only as an indication.
Primary research methodologies are important in developing an informed study. Through these methods, a researcher is able to get the information that is needed to draw informed conclusions. Interviews were used in this primary research. Also there are conversations that were used in order to understand how the service is and how they manage various issues. This was carried out in the current and the retired police officers. The primary research was effectively executed because there was a likelihood of getting unbiased information. Comparing what the current officers gave and what the retired officers stated was important because there can be instances in which the officers may not be willing to give details about
Polygraphs have been featured in pop culture and used in real life situations for many years to see if the subject is telling the truth. The problem with them is that unlike in the movies they fail every so often in real life. The best criminals and liars can pass them without a hitch while normal everyday humans are subject to the tests will. The question here is if polygraph tests are the most reliable form of getting someone to tell the truth. The answer to this question is that even though people have been wrongly accused of failing a polygraph and they aren’t 100%, they are the best form we have today.
Qualitative and quantitative research methods are two most common approaches used when conducting a research task on a criminological issue. Some studies use both approaches together to further enhance and support their research and information, while others choose to use just one. The decision to use one
Being in this business as a researcher, you must stay focus at all times, and at this time we must concentrate on the design strategies for each of the research methodologies. It must include everything that can help to produce a positive research, elements of inquiry, research approaches, and overall design of the research being conducted. We have to determine all the different types of research methodologies that are used in doing research. We must realize the importance of integrating the different method types so that we can continue to construct precise, decisive, and fitting data. As we get into the
The type of research used in this exploration is qualitative data, Qualitative data utilizes the idea of multiple realities, this is that it rejects the positivist idea of one “real” certainty. To reflect the ideas of my research I will review several instances in which a Trump Presidency will impact the United States and the morale of the American people. As cases of President Trump’s, verbiage either reflects divisive language that is harmful to culture and the well-being of America or if his language reflects the progression of America for all, in spite of individual differences.
