The leadership competency for development I chose to work on is Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment. I chose this competency because I have very little knowledge of the healthcare environment and feel it would greatly benefit me to broaden my knowledge in this area since I would like to work with the older population as a care manager/geriatric care manager type role in the near future.
Healthcare Environment competency entails an understanding of the healthcare system and the environment in which healthcare professionals and patients function in. The value and leadership skills in healthcare are both very professions are vital skills that are needed to provide everyday care (Graber, 2008). This literature review will explore the important values and leadership in health care. The review will provide the understandings of both topics. The term value can be determined by a person's standards and principles (Gaudine & Beaton, 2002). According to Grojean, Resick & Diskson (2004) leadership, is an actual way to improve patient`s. A good leader is said to reveal certain roles and behaviors that influence others in the way of positive change and direction. Viinamäki, (2009) back these same ideas but also have confidence in that there is a difference between value and leadership. They believe that leaders are viewed as individuals who can connect through motivation, visions, and inspire positive directions to generate company and organizational change. Graber (2008) impression of leadership can be understood as the capability of one person to impact the behaviors and actions of other people.
Apart from relationship management, leadership, professionalism, human-resource management, and business expertise are few other key competencies that are required for a leader aspiring to advance in the field of healthcare. (Karen Gordon-Sosby, personal communication, September 17, 2015)

Leaders can best be described as those who are capable of having a strong influence over others. They inspire others to reach their maximum potential in order to achieve a common goal (Concept 1, Slide 11, Bullet 8). In a healthcare setting, it is essential for leaders to demonstrate certain abilities. According to the Healthcare Leadership Alliance Model, a leader must excel in five major capacities, which are business skills and knowledge, communication and relationship management, professionalism, leadership, and knowledge of the healthcare system (Concept 1, Slide 21, Bullet 1-6). Each of these components is an essential skill that a leader can use to propel an organization in the right direction.
Leadership can be defined in many different ways. Some people are saying that leadership is “the behavior of the individual…”(Hemphill & Coons, 1957, p. 7), some others may describe it as “the influential increment over and above mechanical compliance with the routine directives of the organization” (Katz & Kahn, 1978, p. 528). I have to admit that I completely agree that every one of them but I personally believe that that the leadership is “the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organization...” (House et al., 1999, p. 184). As I mention in my first paper that good leaders care not only about their personal best, they always want to get the best out
The healthcare industry is constantly and rapidly changing. With such change in the healthcare industry, strong leadership is required for a healthcare organization to reach its’ potential. Throughout my career thus far, there has been only one person that merits to be called a “true leader” according to the Health Administration Leadership Competency Model. For confidentiality, I will call her Sarah.
The final competency builds on the previous competencies and allows for organizational success through leadership, engagement, accountability, integrity and compliance. Healthcare is a complex industry that requires a compassionate, ethical, and strong leader otherwise the organization could just maintain the status quo while other healthcare organizations are pursuing higher quality care.

Leadership is essential to health care. Successful leadership depends on your ability to understand and deliver what you patients and their families, the marketplace and regulators expect (Tillman, 2015). Only focusing on delivering quality is not enough, a leader must also understand the capability of their workforce, business partners and the suppliers of critical goods and services (Tillman, 2015). All these skills and attributes together work towards creating a systems thinker and good leader (Tillman, 2015).
This essay aims to examine leadership in the healthcare setting. According to Weihrich and Koontz (2008), Sullivan and Garland (2010) leadership entails guiding others to realize, particular goals by using interpersonal skills. Therefore, leadership is the art of influencing others to readily and actively endeavour towards meeting goals set by the team. As noted by Spector (2006), there is a shared theme that leadership entails influencing others individual belief systems, behaviours and feelings. For things to run properly in any organization effective leadership is paramount. In the healthcare setting, a mention on clinical leadership ought to be made too. Clinical leadership includes all nurses irrespective of grade linking it to shared leadership. Shared leadership refers to leadership shared within multidisciplinary teams (MDT). The essay will look at the theories of leadership with examples to illustrate this using a reflective account. The author will discuss how the theories/models influence their practice and identify ways of measuring the effectiveness of the theory/model (involve others). Finally a recommendation will be offered in terms of improvement of experiences for those the author has already and yet to work with.
Competencies of health care administrations include communication and relationship management, leadership, professionalism, knowledge of the healthcare environment, and business skills and knowledge. I believe that most of the focus goes on communication and relationship management as well as leadership. In most cases people with high job roles begin to take them as just that more of a leadership skill than knowing how to be more professional and care about their workers they are training. Professionalism and knowledge of health care environment is sometimes lacked as a focus. I love witnessed it first hand that some people feel that because they have the experience to be a leader that’s it; they feel as if they do not have to maintain a certain
In today’s healthcare field, proper leadership is necessary to obtain positive results for patients. To effectively resovle problems that occur during my project, myself and the Wellness Committee (WC) will have to show effective leadership. In the case of dealing with society, the WC must be able to show many traits to motivate their class. The ideas items that they must do is to encourage achivements, enable others, and lead by example (Kouzes). By effectively doing these things, this can keep the class motivated, and keep them from dropping out or becoming not interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle anymore.
