She finds out that the man presumed to have been burned alive was a black man, and he ended up getting out. No one that Macey asks remembers anything about the fire, so they say. They want to keep it secret because he was black and the fire was like arson. After digging into it more Macey is turned to believe that the person who started the fire lived on Shell Road. The only problem with this was that Macey’s grandparents and Austin’s grandparents are the only ones who live here. Now Macey is more determined to find out what happened. Everyone tries to get her to research something different for her history project but, because of the fire that burned her hair, she is stuck on it. Venita, who is also black, is shot during a gang fight. All this proves to Macey that no matter how hard her town tries to hide it they are very prejudice. Her family won’t let her go the funeral. Which upsets her greatly. Finally Macey gets Austin to help her find out how the fire started and who was all responsible. These two end up falling for eachother but don’t want to admit it.

The citizens of Boston know that Hester is married and her husband isn 't living with her. Therefore, when she becomes pregnant, she is arrested for adultery, a grave sin in their Puritan society. Consequently Hester is punished with jail time and made to wear a scarlet letter A for the rest of her life, meaning adulterer. These punishments make her life as a single mother even more difficult. Suddenly, Hester is disliked and ridiculed by everyone in the town. People look down on Hester to make themselves seem better than her. In chapter two, several women gossip about Hester. "This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die; Is there not law for it? Truly there is, both in the Scripture and the statute- book" (Hawthorne 78). The women are calling for an even harsher punishment than the scarlet letter. They want Hester to be executed. As well as being ostracized by the entire community, Hester must endure living in a patriarchal society. Hester has no choice but to adapt to the adversity she faces. To avoid some of the daily persecution she faces, Hester moves to the outskirts of town, where she learns to tend a garden to grow food for her daughter Pearl and herself. This is a clear example of acquiring a skill, because talent and hard work are needed to grow a garden. Alexis tries to stop Lydia by destroying the book. She took the book and ran to a store to burn it. Lydia gets ahold of the book and says the spell that joins her with Aralt. Alexis tries to stop her but it is too late. A dark shadow, Aralt, covered Lydia’s entire body, even seeping into her mouth to stop her from breathing. He sucked the life out of Lydia; she was dead. Pat went to dinner with one of his good friend who goes by the name of Ronnie and his wife who is named Veronica, that is when Pat becomes connected with Tiffany who is Veronicas sister. Pat and Tiffany had many things in common which caused immediate sparks between the two. Pat still finds himself having his eyes set on Niki, even after everything that occurred, that is when Tiffany offered to write Niki a note if Pat agreed to help her dance. After many more things occurring Tiffany, Pat, and other show up to the competition which happens to be the same night as a big football game. Pat and Tiffany perform their long-practiced dance routine on the dance floor for the crowd who is watching.
