The Creek Indian Tribe created art by using items they found in nature. They used it to tell a story or represent history. Each item that was made had a purpose and was put to use. Many of the items were created just before the Green Corn Festival.

This primary source, John Rolfe’s Letter to Thomas Dale about marrying Pocahontas, is from the settlement era and was written in 1614. The European settlers in this era, early 1700s, wanted land and to displace the natives not intermarrying with them. Most settlers remained separate from the Indian society. Some settlers married Native women as a way to gain access to the native societies. It was a way to gain an economic relationship. Indians were being forced off their land because they had no real claim of it. Settlers would establish their towns on sites previously cleared by the Indians. The marriage of John Rolfe and Pocahontas was a rare and unique circumstance in the 1700s. The letter to Thomas Dale is a window to a period of uncertainty between the white settlers and the Native Indians in North America. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of this letter and its effects to the society in the time period after it was written. John Rolfe’s decision to marry Pocahontas proved to be vital at the time. John Rolfe’s letter to Thomas Dale for approval on marrying the Indian Princess Pocahontas reflects on how much society in the early 1610s depended on such thing as intermarriage between a white man and an Indian woman to help keep peace between the white settlers and Native Indians in North America.

The Cherokee tribe is known as one of the earliest and largest Indian tribe in North America. They are federally recognized even today among several states(museum). While they slowly became Americanized by the Europeans who came over to America, some still practice their typical Indian rituals publicly today. Most converted to Christianity and their government in Oklahoma is based off the American government with three branches. One would believe that the Trail of Tears could have completely vanquished these Indians but many made it through the horrendous trial and kept the Indian bloodline going even present day (Conley).

The arrival of the ‘foreigners’, as referred to by the Native Americans, turned a new stone in Native American diplomacy. No longer did they have to only deal with neighboring tribes, as they were forced to endeavor into politics with strangers who were looking to take their land. The first relationship between the pilgrims and the Native Americans began with the Wampanoag tribe. The relations between the two groups paved the view that the pilgrims had towards the Indians. The decently friendly relationship that stood between the two groups was short lived as the pilgrims felt that the indians were getting in the way of their expansion; and shortly after the friendship ceased to exist (Bell, 37).

To begin with, the name “Cherokee” comes from a Muskogee word which means “speakers of another language”. The Cherokee also considered themselves as the Aniyunwiya. Also, most of all the Indians got sent to Oklahoma. Cherokee is not just a tribe name it also stands for a language. There was a writing system that was invented by a Cherokee person. The creation story of the Ojibwa beginning with nothing but absorbing dark void because in the beginning there was nothing besides that. Nothing. Not until Manitou. Before him there was a possibility that everything that we know and also everything that we didn’t know could exist. Our human mind is not able to be capable of thinking such possibility. No person can imagine such unfathomable powers to envision such foresee of creation. It is unpassable for a human to image such a phenomenon thing and bring it all into existence, that’s why people believe in a high power then them. Some call it as God, Allah, Buddha etc. God’s are all (seemingly) super natural, imaginary some would say! and are a creation of humanity to bring a sense of hope.

The Plains Cree Tribe lived in Canada, north and west of Lake Superior in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Women wore dresses made out of deerskins, Men wore animal skin leggings,a loincloth which is a small piece of cloth or skin worn between the legs and a belt to hold the loin cloth. They did not speak english, their language is called Montagnais. They lived in teepees.

The Ojibwa or known as the Chippewa in European are people of northeastern North America. The term Ojibwa is said to mean the puckered moccasin people or they say the French said the word meant pictograph. The Chippewa Indians mainly lived in the Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and Michigan. There was 35,000 Ojibwa on the continent in the mid seventeenth century. They used the word Anishinabeg to describes themselves which means “original people.” The Ojibwa has its own cultural values like honesty, generosity, endurance, wisdom, and strength of character. All these values have been instilled through education and religious practice. The tribe has had ties with the French and even helped the French fight against the British in the French and Indian war. The French traders would even wed Chippewa women. The family was of great importance to the Ojibwa tribes.

Don’t be confused when an Indian tribe is called the Chippewa or the Ojibway because they are the same tribe. There are many marriage rules and traditions that happen all around the globe. As an aboriginal couple they have different regulations as a male and as a women. As a male, he was permitted to have more than one spouse at the same time. But as a women, she can only remarry if she is a widow. Another thing that is interesting about the marriages in Aboriginal people is the “Blackfella Way”. Meaning the couple has not received an official church blessing or any other type of legal confirmation of their relationship. So in current times, if you do not have any confirmation about your marriage, your marriage would not exist. The other interesting thing about Aboriginals way in current time is the name of their extended family. Instead of calling their cousins, cousins, no matter if it is a boy or girl, they called them “Cousin Brother” or “Cousin Sister”. Even though this is something that makes total sense, I still find it really interesting to know that is what they call each other.
