Many colleges that offer Hospitality Management may also include the option to enroll within a specific concentration, so that you may gain a “specialty”. Therefore it’s important to have a sense of what area of hospitality you are interested in, so that you enroll yourself into an appropriate program, including programs where graduates have been able to secure employment in your interested field and location. For example, if you have the desire to work as a ski lodge manager, you may want to make sure you enroll into a school that provides the focus of the hotel industry and potential internship opportunities within ski country vs. the beaches in Florida.

In relation to hospitality and catering, the non-commercial or “public” sector exists in the form of hospitals and institutes of education. Organisations in the commercial sector are privately owned and exist solely to find a niche to exploit to make money. While money-making is still a factor in the private sector, it is not the main goal. With the primary goal, demographic and expectations of the target audience, along with location and budget, all taken into account, different areas of the hospitality and catering industry begin to differ widely.
The beginning of my time at Florida State University I was not convinced I had made the right decision to pursue a major in Professional Golf Management. My studies weakened and I changed majors numerous times. Had it not been for the roadblocks, challenges, and temporary diversions at FSU, I may have never realized my passion for Hospitality Management. When I first entered FSU the PGA Golf Management major was housed in the College of Business, but at the time of my re-admittance to the program it had been switched to the Dedman School of Hospitality with a degree in Hospitality Management. During my junior year of high school, I became extremely confident in the idea that I wanted to pursue a career in the field of Event Management with a major in Hospitality Management. Due to the fact that my major of choice is somewhat general, it is offered at many different universities worldwide. I had to ask myself, where could I truly excel in this career field and what university would give me the opportunity to apply my skills in the real world? New York University was always one of my top choices on my list of colleges to apply to, but it wasn’t until I discovered the NYU School of Professional Studies Jonathan M. Tisch Center for Hospitality and Tourism that NYU became my number one school of choice. Reading about the Jonathan M.

Being a Hotel General Manager would be my ideal job in the Lodging Industry. To get the that point of being a General Manager would take years of working in the hotel industry as well as having the proper education to preform the job. My plan of action would be to start out as a check-in agent or a front desk associate at a hotel. This would give me experience in working with guests and with numbers, knowledge every General Manager needs. Working at the front desk initially would give me a good idea what each department in the hotel does, and perhaps I would move on to another job in the hotel just to gain more experience. A good General Manager needs to know how everything in the hotel functions.
