One of the most important aspects of academic development is providing studies
and research to identify and analyse learning styles and recognise how these different
learning styles could successfully support students’ successes in the different
academic environments. Burden (1994) observes that there are a number of factors
generates the differences of learning styles which significantly influence the
learners’ results in varied academic environments. This essay will discuss these
different learning approaches and how some of their effects could positively
influence students’ results in a variety of academic contexts. In particular, the
discussion will be on impacts of the deep and surface learning

To sum up, although surface learning
method and using memory positively influence Asian students’ success in some
fields, they are considered a difficult method to understand materials effectively.
Regarding effects of the intrinsic locus of control which are associated with students of deep thinking style, a lot of studies state that these factors positively
influence students’ success in most academic circumstances (Biggs 1985) although
some students do not prefer this method . Biggs’ description of deep learning style is
understanding, integrating and analysing the materials and concepts and searching for
other information and data using a variety of sources. In relation to some paradigms
of learning methods, they assert that there is a positive relationship between high
achievement and the deep method (Boyle, 2003). In addition, most studies agree that
the deep approach to learning with an intrinsic motivation is seen as a positive factor
to increase effort, study seriously and acquire high scores. In fact, most students
of the deep approach believe that the results of their deep thinking methods have
derived from their own conduct (Kishor 1983). Some studies demonstrate that
Before taking the Learning Style Inventory, I always felt I was mostly a tactile learner. I would be able to learn in a visual fashion if need be, but I would rather learn and by doing and making mistakes. After taking the Learning Style Inventory, the results definitely supported my initial thoughts. My tactile preference was 14 points higher than my auditory score, but only 2 points higher than my visual. Although I believe I will always will be a stronger tactile learner, my visual learner skills have been improving throughout my college learning experience. Plus, it’s important to note that many tactile learning situations are dependent on visual learning. This means that tactilely learning has been strengthening my visual learning skills.
Deep learners respond well to the challenge of controlling a difficult and complex issue. Intrinsic motivation often compliments this style. Strategic learners are motivated primarily by rewards. They try to make the best grade, but only if they can see a clear reward to it. Often the competition and the opportunity to beat others is all the reward need, mainly extrinsic motivated. Surface learners are often motivated by a desire to avoid failure. This learning style does just what need for each assignment and moves along to the next, never wanting to be the best but is happy with a passing grade. Most often there motivation is a mixture of intrinsic and extrinsic. This dash is often in dispute with the learner motivation is the most likely not to deliver the goods.
Aural/Auditory: People who learn better from lectures, group discussion, Q&A sessions where information is transfer through communication.
Whether you believe learning styles are a myth or fact they still can help you learn the material for class. Just because you take this test online and it says that you are one hundred percent auditory learner doesn’t mean you can’t learn other ways. Learning styles can help you discover more creative ways for you to remember a topic or specific details. How Amy made a poster it helped her present her topic but also helped her learn and remember her topic. By writing it down and being creative you will remember the topic a lot better. I’m not a firm believer in learning styles but I do think that they can help. I am an auditory learner so listening helps me learn although it isn’t the only way I can learn. One of the ken talks we had watched
A learning style is a particular way in which the mind receives and processes information. There are four types of Learning Styles: Visual (Sight), Auditory (Talk), Tactile (Hands-on),, and . I am an auditory learner which means I'm a talker. My weak learning style is
able to utilise my full potential to achieve a successful graduation of this three- year
Learning style is an individual 's unique approach to learning based on strengths, weaknesses, and, preferences. Learning styles explains the concept that every person learns differently. Assessments of learning style typically ask individuals to evaluate what sort of information presentation they prefer, and, what kind of mental activity they find most engaging, and, attractive for them. Theories about learning styles agree that all people can be classified according to their style of learning. In this paper different theories about learning styles are reviewed briefly. At the end, Gendlin experiential theory is reviewed in detail.
At the beginning of the semester an assignment was given out in regards to assessing your learning styles. Upon doing the assignment I felt that I already knew the results I would obtain due to the fact that I did the same assignment my sophomore year of college. I was totally surprised with my results because they showed that I am becoming a more balanced learner. In previous assignments the results would usually show that I am more of one type of learner than another. My learning styles reflected that I am an active, sensory, visual and global learner. Knowing this aided in my success in this class as well as others because I started to apply this information into how I prepared or retained information for classes.
Learning styles can and will reflect personalities and have a substantial impact on your professional developments. Understand which style is needed and best suited for your learning process and the ways you absorb information, it may one particular or a combination of a few. Effective learning and effective thinking will help increase the speed of success and is necessary to continue learning to have a greater understanding of the work we do to be competent and influential to you and the organisation's wealth and have a competitive edge on the rest of industry in this fluctuating market and all styles are just as important as the other. Visual style include observing in random orders of pictures, diagrams and demonstrations, displays, films
VARK Learning Styles refer to a learning theory that differentiates individuals into learning groups. This theory became well known in the 1970s. It is used in identifying individual students learning capabilities. Each learning styles depends on cognitive, emotional, environmental factors and previous experience. Educators use the different learning style in classroom activities, curriculum, and assessments. The acronym for VARK stands for the following learning style: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic/tactile. Each variable represents a distinctive preferred way of learning for an individual. Visual learners prefer the use of images, maps, and graphic organizers to access and understand new information. Auditory learners use listening, speaking such as lectures and class discussions to process data. On the other hand, some students favor the reading and writing method utilizing note taking and translating concepts. Finally, the kinesthetic or tactile style of learning depends on hands-on and the use of qualities such as gestures, body movements, and positioning in learning (Peyman et al., 2014).
Learning about my learning styles this week has not only help me learn what the best way and conditions for me to learn are, but I also learned more about myself than I could have ever imagined to learn in a whole year let alone a week. My result for the first quiz, who are you, was “The Advocate” which is commonly known as an INFJ (https://www.16personalities.com/). My specific group is –T (https://www.16personalities.com/). This means that I have an “inborn sense of idealism and morality”, however the dreams that I dream are not always ideal (https://www.16personalities.com/). Continuing deeper into the reading I learned that it is best for me to surround myself with wise and truthful individuals, for I am able to work best with them compared
Before I went to the ILC for the learning styles assessment, I had an idea of what my learning style was, but did not know what it really meant. I knew I was more of a visual or verbal learner, but I did not know how to use that in my everyday life.
Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.
The results that I received after taking What’s Your Learning Style stated that I’m a visual learning. After seeing the result, I now know how I learn best. As stated on results that I have to picture things in my head and look, and write things done to get the understanding of what I am working on. There are many things that I can do to learn better is make sure that I have more time in doing my homework, because being a visual learning I have to picture, write important things to make sure that I can remember them. I already try to color code things especially when I’m at work because I need to be very organize. What I can add to the suggestions is that the more that I write then the more that I will remember, because I know that I have to
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “learning is the activity or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught, or experiencing something.” Referring to the textbook, Life-Span Human Development, 7th edition, by Carol Sigelman, on page 244, “memory is our ability to store and later retrieve information about past events, develops and changes over the life span.” In this essay, I will be discussing how learning styles are implemented in our memory to help us later recognize information that we had processed through specific styles of learning. Through different online tests that I have recently taken, I will explain how different learning styles such as visual, auditory, and tactile learning can help improve a person’s way of remembering subjects, also defined as memory.
