I Found An Issue With The Education System

Lincoln High School, which is located in a low-income neighborhood in San Diego, was a rebuilt after 50 years of failing to educate children. Rebuilding the high school was the answer the community had been looking for they were hopeful. Before the rebuild most students who attended Lincoln did not meet the standards for their grade-level, few graduated and even fewer went go on to college. After years of suffering and neglect there was little doubt That Lincoln High School deserved the $129 million it received from the city to rebuild. But was rebuilding the school the solution for Lincoln High School 's education problem? First we’ll examine, How the problem started, the decision making steps and if the plan was successful.

When watching the movie Lean On Me directed by John G. Avildsen, the characters are seen as rambunctious, illiterate delinquents, suffering from poverty. Many citizens have advised to close this school because it is a “waste of education no worth trying to improve the incompetent, poor, trashy students that attend it.” The school board saw for this and agreed that the African American, Hispanic, and a few Caucasians were nothing but troubled, rigid, uneducated kids. This may be what they have grown to be, however they were raised in a facility everyday that had no guidelines or expectations. No one but the student is to blame some may say, but the students only did what the administrator and educators allowed.

At Hazelwood High School, they do things differently than at my school. At Hazelwood, most of the people worry about themselves and nobody else. Most of the school doesn’t get good grades and the school does not do anything about it. One day in English class Andy walked out when they were reading Macbeth because it was too emotional for Andy to handle. His friends were concerned and told the school counselor. They said, “But… but… it seems like… like… he needs help or somethin’.” Then the counselor said, “Well, I probably shouldn’t tell you boys this, but he is getting some outside counseling… So you boys can relax and be assured that he is getting whatever help he needs”(100). At Harrisburg High School, if someone had an issue like that, the counselors and teachers would be concerned, even if the person was getting outside help. Another thing about education that is different than mine is the school. In Ronda’s English homework, she wrote, “Our school building must have been built about a million years ago, because it was brown and tall and raggedy-looking, but it fit right in with the rest of the day”(16). The American education system has been transforming since the founding of the country in 1776. For most of the beginning of the country’s life, education was reserved for those who could afford to send their children to England to get a proper education. When education systems started to form in America, it was still a majority of white males from wealth that were the only students.

Summit Charter Collegiate Academy is a dependent charter school under the Burton School District, and as you can tell by the name, it is a college prep school. SCCA is a middle school and high school campus serving students from 6-12th grade. It is also an International Baccalaureate world school, which is a school that has a philosophy of having a committed, challenging, and international education for students. The Burton School District and the administration of SCCA expect the high schoolers to always gain prosperity and only focus on their grades and college. It doesn’t sound bad at all to know that they expect great things from their students, but it has gotten to the point where they are expecting too much. America’s education system is a disaster and the government has over the years spent millions on fixing the education system. The government has failed in fixing the education system because they are not the real people who can fix it. The government has made many different programs to fix the education system, like the No Child left behind program. Most people blame the government for spending millions to fix the education system and failing. What our society does not understand is that the government can only fix so much. It is time for all students, parents, and teachers to take responsibly and fix the education system in the way they want. Students, parents and teachers can make the education system better by students taking control of their own education, parents who care for their kid’s education and teachers who make amazing learning environment for their students.

The school that I work in is located in Frederick, Maryland. We have nearly 800 students that attend Kindergarten through 5th grade, and with diverse backgrounds. The school is located in a very prosperous neighborhood, with several additional sections of townhomes and apartment complexes which house Section 8. All of these are within walking distance to the school. In Frederick County there are over 2,500 ELL students and more than 11,000 that are FARM (Free And Reduced Meals) students. Let’s imagine a school with small group classroom sizes, preparing students for college and careers after high school. Also with diverse AP and honor classes by creating a program to help aid students to learn about these classes and the benefits. There are many life issues and affairs people have to adapt too while maturing and growing up. These could include: learning about what kind of person they aspire to be, where they have the desire to live, or what it's like to pay bills. Yet, when and where does one learn to digest all this information? Certainly not in the American education system. Research suggests that Leon Botstein's claim- rules of high school are not the rules of life and that schools need to bring more real world into them- is true and that the American educational system needs to be revised and refined.

Is the education system flaw to many students over the years? The education system in the United States has problems over the years because it has some flaws of helping students to succeed. Students who attend community college or university will have issues that will cost them to be in debt or could not complete it. The system tried many ways to bring students accomplish their degree, but the problem is that students face issues that will affect their goal of reaching their degree. The system has changed in order to fix some problems, however, the results make the prices for most colleges so high that not many students could afford. Not many students are rich because most students are on the benefits from social security or working. There is fifty percent of students that are graduates, while the other fifty percent are undergraduate students. Most colleges are not doing the right job to solve the system; however, they did little effort as they needed the requirements form students in order to meet their standards. My claim of the education system is that many college students drop out of school due to problems such as unprepared students, lack of globalism language, and financial aid needs.

It seems the biggest problem in the CPS district, more specifically Paul Robeson High School, is funding issues. With the district and the school already in debt, classroom funding, not to mention funding for important after school activities and fine arts classes, is very limited. Not only does this make it hard for teachers to have the appropriate resources for helping children learn, but it also makes things like Teaching Union Strikes very likely. Children are constantly being put on the backburner when money is on the line, which defeats the entire purpose of the public schooling

While reading the piece, “Straight from the source: What works for fist-generation college students” I was somewhat conflicted. I applaud the state of Texas for taking steps in order to increase enrollment of first-generation students in higher education institutions, However, I feel like these steps aren’t addressing the bigger issue; that being the broken education system in America. Until this bigger issue is addressed and the problem is dealt with from the root, anything that is done will only be addressing the symptoms caused by the real problem which is America’s broken education system.

What is it that’s making our country suffer from excelling in education? Very few would argue about the importance of our education system today. Issues such as lazy teachers, lack of parent involvement, and teaching useless information in class may hinder progress in today’s education system. An education plays a crucial role and is an essential tool, unfortunately, with all the jaded judgments; our students are not able to value their education. A proper education can open the doors to many opportunities that would have never been possible if it had not been for the knowledge and preparation that one received while in school. With the growing economy and desperate times, it is more important than ever for our country’s children to receive the proper education and training that is needed to allow them to acquire a good job and produce the revenue needed to live. Today's education system is flawed in many ways, and these flaws should be eliminated to ensure a good education for our future generation.

Throughout the history of civilization, education has been an important tool in shaping an individual as well as the society that the individual is a part of. In the older civilizations, only the elite upper class had access to education. This kept these people at the top of the social ladder, and suppressed the common people who did not have access to the same education as the nobles.
