It did not occur to me before I learned more about conflict and negotiation how much I could be missing out on, like money for example by simply negotiating my salary. I have always had my reservations about conflict, confrontation and negotiation, but as the saying goes “you are scared of what you don’t understand”. Based off new knowledge learned in this class and the simulations I have a new way on how I will handle my negotiations moving forward which will be addressed in further detail along with my experiences. Before I stared learning about negotiation in this class I typically thought it was just bartering or getting people to see my point of my view either forcefully or gracefully. I know it is used to get good discounts and perks, as I have witnessed my Mother doing so throughout my life so far. I know it is used on a larger scale when trying to get votes in on a bill that affects some or all people. I was hesitant to get myself involved in negotiations on my accord because usually I just let the chips fall where they may and did not have confidence in articulating my wants, needs, and opinions well enough. Similar to the confrontation avoidance/accommodation cycle, I used to avoid or quickly resolve negotiations (Cahn & Abigail, 2014, p. 33) For those reasons I didn’t engage in negotiation often, only when it came to work and marriage.
