1. What is the difference between information technology and information systems? Describe some of the functions of information systems. In your answer include two examples of information technologies and two examples of information systems.
Information technology is the use of computer hardware, software and associated technologies to process data and achieve company’s business objectives. Some examples of information technologies include mobile computer devices such as PDAs as well as online banking software.
Information technology can be thought of essentially as a way of implementation and management of computer information systems.

All of these can be used to improve the service a hospital provides to the patients. It can also allow for better allocation and division of resources within a hospital.

6. Identify and discuss four major types of information systems that serve the main management groups within a business. What are the relationships among these systems?
Four main types of information systems are:
- transaction processing systems
- management information systems
- decision support systems
- executive support systems
Transaction processing systems are computerized systems that keep track of elementary routine activities and transactions undertaken by a company, ex. receipts, payroll and shipping. The main purpose of these systems is to track the flow of transactions through the company and produce information used by all the other types of systems. They generally serve the operation management of a company.
Management information systems provide middle management with reports and summaries of the company’s operations and performance using data provided by transaction processing systems.
Decision support systems also serve middle management although they focus mainly on non-routine and rapidly changing problems. To do so they combine the internal information provided by other systems with external data including competitors’
