Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to work toward a common goal. In dealing with a diverse group of people it can be a challenge to get everyone on the same wavelength in order to work together to create the best outcome for success. In the role of leadership, you are confronted with internal and external challenges as well as the challenges that are inherently part of being a leader. Identifying these challenges and overcoming them define the difference between a good leader and a great leader. The internal challenges of leadership deal with a person’s abilities. Leadership underlines a person’s true abilities or lack thereof. It emphasizes a person’s limitations, strengths and weaknesses. (Rabinowitz) The difference between a good leader and a great leader is a person’s ability to identify these traits and overcome them. This is called Self-regulation and is a big part of leadership. Being able to analyze oneself and make the necessary changes in order to reach a successful outcome is just one of the many challenges a leader may have to face. Internal challenges can also very much depend on the task at hand. For example, the fact that a leader may be very strong at building relationships at work. This can be a double-edged sword because, though they are extremely approachable it may be hard for them to discipline people their employees or tell them they need to change their way of doing their job. Most people think being a leader is mostly about being the boss, having people work under you and just becoming successful, but it boils down to more than that. Leaders are those individuals that actually utilize their many abilities in leadership and administration to help make a better change for themselves, the people around them and the goal that needs to be achieved. Leadership is not an expertise that can essentially be grabbed from a book or article based on leadership but instead it is one of those initiative abilities that are increased through experience and understanding those real life situations.
