Summary: This Article evaluates the violence and abuse conducted by police officers towards their intimate partners (Goodmark 1188). Studies show that there is a brief connect toward police officers public and private lives. Interpersonal violence of off-duty officers has been an issue throughout the country for many years. Due to the amount of training police officers receive they are seen to be more dangerous and violent towards their significant others than the average individual and are more likely to be abusive. Research used the National Police Misconduct Project, in which lists the number of incidents of intimate partner abuse conducted by police officers in various jurisdictions ranging from Washington to Virginia. Other research relied on self-reports of the abused. The article shows many examples of police violence and abuse where police officers physically or verbally assault their partners. Regarding two cases in Baltimore of 2013 two police officers killed their partners and then subsequently killed themselves shortly after.

In a natural survey conducted in England, women reported higher rates of intimate partner violence than men, whether the violence was physical or emotional (Jonas et al., 2014). Intimate partner violence among college students appears to be similar to research on adult married and cohabiting couples. A five-year longitudinal study of more than 2,000 college students in the United States showed that twenty-six percent of college students experienced physical intimate partner violence in their freshman year (Nabors & Jasinski, 2009). As a college student and friend of many, I believe that it is important for me become more knowledgeable about intimate partner violence and know about the characteristics of an abuser. Before taking this course about family violence, I had an idea what was Intimate Partner Violence. I have always believed that Intimate partner violence involves only married couples. I had also thought that violence between a married couple consider the only force of using physical abuse only. Fortunately after reading about partner violence, I have learned that there were more than just one type of abuses. For example, I never thought that sexual abuse could happen between a couple. In addition, I learned that intimate partner violence does not consider only married partners but also partners who have same sex genders, and are unmarried.

World wide intimate partner violence is a serious action, not only for heterosexual relationships, but also for same-sex relationships. In an article IPV was best described as abuse that occurs between two individuals in a close and intimate relationship and usually refers to romantic couples, be they are married, dating, living together, or former partners/ spouses (Samuelson, Kristin W. and Oringher, Jonathan 1). When we think about it, then why have we not heard about IPV in same-sex and even in heterosexual relationships and why isn’t it reported. Researchers have defined IPV as a pattern of behavior in which a current or former partner attempts to control the thoughts, beliefs, or actions of their partner and could include physical, sexual, or psychological harm (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008a). As I gathered information I discovered there is not much information. Why? We know that IPV can be world wide and devastate anyone but we are judgmental to our surroundings and many do not tell anyone about what is going on. Not only can that but IPV be caused by a substance, physical and mental problems.

Today’s society contains an overwhelming amount of people “stuck” in abusive relationships. Why don’t they just pack up and leave one might wonder? Is this because they want to believe that people can change? It is a very disturbing issue, when the person that you are in “Love” with is the person inflicting so much pain on you. An outsider looking in a on a relationship of this sort will question why women that are victims of Intimate Partner Violence simply do not leave their relationships?

The hypothesis/theory for the article “Emotion Regulation and Intimate Partner Violence in Newlyweds” was that the variability in negative effect is associated with IPV perpetration. This hypothesis was tested by using specific questionnaires, recruitment processes and eligibility requirements. The overall goal of the study was to examine what kind of role emotional regulation would have in regards to IPV perpetration. In this experiment they chose to operationalize emotion regulation as the variation in negative affect observed over a 7-day diary. They chose to examine these issues within a sample of newlywed couples due to the fact that newlywed couples wouldn’t be 100% adapted to the marriage lifestyle.

The prevalence of domestic violence in USA is constantly increasing from day to day. Various studies suggest that in most of the cases it frequently goes undetected. Among different types of violence, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is considered as one of the major public health issues faced by women. Around 1.3 to 5.3 million people are facing IPV each year in the United States mainly being immigrant women. The National Intimate Partner Sexual Violence Survey (NVAWS) reports that 3 in 10 women have suffered by an intimate partner. The paper mostly covers on the sources that are used by the immigrant women and the legitimate reasons behind.

Based on the critical reflection I paper this student has gained knowledge in regards to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Previously, her first thought of IPV was gathered from a video on social media depicting a man who was not disturbed by his neighbors when there were sounds of a woman being beaten coming from his home. However, when he played his drums too loudly, his neighbors were adamant in letting him know that he was disturbing the peace. This commercial reiterates why survivors and witnesses underreport IPV, due to the intimidation of the perpetrator not only on the survivor but also on the bystanders who also witness these events.

Every year 16 of every 100 husbands and wives physically attack each other. Since men are usually physically larger and stronger than woman more woman than men need medical attention after episodes of violence. If a homicide occurs six out of seven times the wife is the victim. Although violence occurs in all social classes it is not equally distributed among them. Families with low incomes, blue collar workers, families in which the husband is unemployed or there is an above average number of children, people with less education, individuals with no religious affiliation, or under 30 years of age are more likely to engage in violent behaviors. Another significant contributing factor to family violence is alcohol consumption. Couples who do not drink have the lowest rate of family violence while alcoholics have the highest rates. There also is a strong indication that children, who observe domestic violence growing up, especially during their teen years, will be violent in their own marriage.
