Key planning through such tools as the Greer Community Master Plan and monitoring progress through the National Citizen Survey have proven to be effective as the City of Greer works to improve not only infrastructure but also the quality of life for residents. National Research Center, Inc. (NRC) has validated the effectiveness of those planning efforts, naming the City of Greer as winner of the 2016 Voice of the People Award for Transformation in Foundations of Livability. Assistant City Administrator Mike Sell accepted the city’s award at the 102nd annual ICMA conference in Kansas City, Mo.
With hope that the document is never required, the City of Greer and All Clear Emergency Management Group of Raleigh, N.C., opened a proof of the city’s updated hazard mitigation plan for public comment. The document is important to all residents in the City of Greer because it is designed to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. As stated in the draft’s introduction: In order to minimize the impact of hazard events on the City of Greer, the city must assess its vulnerability to man-made and natural hazard events, determine what resources it has available to dedicate towards hazard mitigation, and establish and carry out the specific steps which will reduce the city’s vulnerabilities. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) cites several advantages of developing and updating an effective hazard mitigation plan:

Greenville County’s disaster preparedness plans and resources are maintained by the Emergency Operations Center. The Emergency Operations Center “is the physical location where emergency management and support personnel come together during an emergency to coordinate response and recovery efforts and allocate available resources” (“Emergency Preparedness,” 2015). Greenville County Hazards include naturally occurring events such as dam/levee failure, drought, flooding, tornados, tropical storms, and winter storms; as well as hazardous materials (HazMat) events including fixed facility accidents, nuclear accidents, pipeline accidents, and transportation accidents. Hazardous materials events are of particular concern due to the fact that “Greenville County has more than 1,400 miles of state-maintained highways, numerous railroad lines, and many industrial manufacturing plants that use hazardous materials”

Charity Productions in partnership with the College of Architecture’s Texas Target Communities Program at Texas A&M University have collaborated together to develop a set of solutions in response to the pre-existing neighborhood conditions throughout Harris County in Houston, Texas. The conditions of these particular neighborhoods have created a pattern of disparities throughout Harris County to be recognized as constraints to residents in impeding their ability to become affluent members of society. Texas Target Communities and Charity Productions have taken a step further to not only provide an analysis of evidence for these disparities but to identify the assets present in these communities to formulate feasible and cost effective solutions.
To attract new capital investments, create jobs, and revitalize the community, the City of Greer partners with the Greer Commission of Public Works, the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce, the Partnership for Tomorrow, and private sector businesses to support the Greer Development Corporation (GDC).
Thank you, Ms. Leona Graham (mayor), for the opportunity to provide an assessment report for Hazard City. This report will provide an assessment on structural damage of an Intensity IX earthquake, and emergency housing needs. It will also identify actions homeowners can use to help prevent future structural damages, and give more information on possible effects of an Intensity IX earthquake. The assessment report will identify danger of a failing dam, and provide further understanding of the elements which will include an emergency plan. The table that follows is an assessment of the number of people needing emergency housing due to an Intensity IX earthquake.
The purpose was to connect and to find common ground. The hope was that community stakeholders could work together. The motivation was to invest in the core vibrancy of our community. The ambition was that projects could develop. The priorities were smart design, the arts, and entrepreneurship.
In Tennessee, there are many wonderful communities to live in. The focus of this assessment is Hendersonville, Tennessee. This community is one I am the most familiar with since I have lived there for almost twenty years. I have seen this community change and grow throughout the years. The demographics of this community along with its infrastructure have changed a lot over the years. There are many good aspects of this community and many things that can be improved. As shown, there are multiple aspects of a community to take into consideration.

Lack of evenly distributed prosperity in Durham has been at the forefront of the mayoral election. Martin posed a question to the candidates regarding the city’s growth but inability of citizens’ to reap the benefits of its development; and how they would handle this if elected as mayor. Ali readily responded, “As we see growth in our city occurring, making sure we have policy for inclusion is important” and added an antedote about the drastic improvements his non-profit, working in conjunction with the city of Durham, had on minority and women-owned firms, underscoring his experience and enthusiasm to help all of Durham. Ali finally noted that I elected, his goal is prosperity “not just for the big people or the companies or the organizations that we are contracting with, but to make sure that we are able to spread that around so that other people can participate in this prosperity”.
I chose the same programs within different areas, both called “Greening America’s Capitals”. I chose my hometown of Jefferson City, Missouri and Little Rock, Arkansas. Both projects are geared towards improvements in surrounding areas of state capitals in the United States. Little Rock has focused on a multi-plan “facelift” for the Main Street Corridor located near their capital, and Jefferson City has focused on the restoration of Wears Creek near the capital.

After a disaster, how well a community can recover will depend largely on how well they prepared in advance. The purpose of the Topsham community Hazard Mitigation Plan is to provide a comprehensive set of guidelines for hazard response and mitigation in the community. The plan identifies potential risks with appropriate mitigation responses to significantly reduce loss of life, injuries, economic costs, and destruction of natural and cultural resources.
