Introduction Leadership is the ability of an individual to Lead or guide the other team of individuals, or an entire organization. The leader should have research skills as well as Practical skills and should have high ability of managing and executing the tasks. The qualities of an effective leadership can be use of superior mental energies and motivational powers to make their teams encouraged and determined to perform. According to some, leadership is determined by distinctive characteristic present at birth, however, accordingly there is evidence to show that leadership can be developed by hard works and by developing skills. Thus effective leadership can be the result of nature or nurture. This is also validated that groups can be succeeded when guided by effective leader. Therefore, leadership can be a powerful tool for the success of the company. In this paper, we are going to discuss about the Microsoft, it’s an American multinational technology company headquarters in Washington. It develops, licenses computer software’s and also manufactures personal computers. Its best known for its windows operating systems and Office tools which are required in day to day businesses. The company is run by a board of directors which are formed from those who have an outstanding leadership qualities of managing the company. There are various committee formed within the board for specific matters. These boards of
Leadership in an organization often plays a critical role, and is frequently, though not always, one of the major drivers of the success or failure of a company. (Bass, 1990) Effective leadership helps a company through times of peril and brings a future of brightness. It makes a corporation successful. However, what is leadership? According to Kouzes and Posner, it is the art of mobilizing others to want to struggle for shared aspirations. (1995, p.30) Leaders set a clear direction for us; they help us realize what is ahead; they support us to achieve and win; they encourage and inspire us when we feel depressed. Without leadership, an organization will degenerate into chaos and unstructured because people view things in different ways.
Leadership is a facet of management. It is just one of the many assets a successful manager must possess. The main aim of a manager is to maximize the output of the organization through administrative implementation. To achieve this managers must undertake the four functions of management: planning, organization, leading and controlling. In some cases leadership is just one important component of the leading function. Predpall (1994) said, "Leaders must let vision, strategies, goals, and values be the guide-post for action and behavior rather than attempting to control others". In some circumstances, leadership is not required. For example, self-motivated groups may not require a single leader and may find leaders dominating. The fact that a leader is not always required proves that leadership is just an asset and is not essential.
Leadership can be defined as the process of identifying a goal, motivating others, and make them to achieve the mutually goals (Giltinane, 2013). According to Humphreys (2002), successful leaders do this by applying their leadership knowledge and skills. A good leadership is not only good at management, but also use different leadership styles in different situations. A successful corporation must has a good leader who have the flexible ability which can provide a suitable leadership to make the company successful. Furthermore, there have no perfect leadership styles in the world. Different leader have different leadership styles which also have the different strengths and weaknesses (Ali & Waqar, 2013). Leaders need to consider
In order to better understand the ideals of leadership, I met with two respected and admired school leaders: the Assistant Principal/Dean of Curriculum, and the Athletic Director. I chose these two school leaders because I wanted to gain an understanding of leadership from two diverse perspectives. I am thankful for the opportunity to hear from two different types of leaders, who ultimately share a lot of the same visions for my school and for leadership in general.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
In the world we live in today the roles of power and leadership are often confused. Although they have similar meanings, they can be distinctly defined between the latter. The key difference between the two is the term of effect. Power is the exercise of leadership, and leadership is only defined if you have power. Leadership always involves attempts on a leader to affect behavior or a follower in a situation, whereas power is not equivalent with influence on another person’s behavior. Although power and leadership have similar meanings, they are certain differences that can point out what makes
In today’s competitive world, leadership skills are crucial for both personal and professional development. Leadership is an important function of management which helps an individual or a business to maximize efficiency and to achieve goals. Leadership has different meanings to various authors. Most commonly, leadership is defined as influence, that is, the art of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals. (Koontz). Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of either formal or informal group in the task of goal setting and goal achievement. A leader is one whose magnetic personality innervates people for some cause. Not by words, but by their actions is
Leadership is a process of influencing activities of a particular group of people with the aim of attaining certain stipulated goals. In defining leadership there is need to consider a particular group, the common goals and the duties that are allocated to specific members of the group depending on their abilities (Fiedler 1976). Leadership therefore cannot successfully occur unless members of the group are given different considerations in terms of personality, traits and responsibilities. In considering leadership, it is important to look at the leader, the group or organization they are leading, the members as individuals and the situation; these are
Leadership is an incremental component that centers the existence, survival and functioning of any group or organisation. Indeed, the organisations recognise that their success is highly-dependent upon the quality and effectiveness of this dimension. There are two main functions that leaders are bounded to perform. The first is central on accomplishing the task towards the attainment of goals such as initiating actions, keeping members attention on the goal, clarifying issues, helping the group develop a procedural plan, evaluating the work done and making expert information available. The second is on developing member’s feelings to maintain the strength of the organisation. Leaders are expected to keep interpersonal relations, arbitrate excuse, provide encouragement, give chance to divert, stimulate self-direction and increase interdependence among organisational members.
1.) The concept that I have acquired and would like to discuss is the next generation of leaders. Times are changing for many organizations including a diverse population and a true global mindset. With these changes taking place there is a need for a new generation of leaders. A new order is in store and that brings about different approaches to leadership for many organizations. Women now hold a large percentage of leadership positions within organizations. This change provides diversity and a different approach to leadership than in the past. According to Senge, women tend to focus on longer term issues such as sustainability which is a total different systems thinking approach than men. The next generation of leadership will not have
Power is a fascinating concept. Babies experience power related to obtaining nourishment and comfort; adults recognize how power affects their jobs, lifestyle and relationships. Sometimes, giving away power means you get more. Sometimes delineating your power boundaries is necessary for survival. That is why power is paradoxical its outcomes are counterintuitive to the inputs. The law of attraction suggests a principle of cause and effect that you influence your own reality and the responses you receive from those around you. Therefore, power begins with and is retained by knowing yourself and understanding the position of relevant others. Reflect upon your ability to listen objectively to points of view different from your
“In 2011, a civil war broke out in Syria, ISIS took advantage of the chaos and began seizing territory with its brutal tactics, including on the spot executions and public be-headings of citizens. ISIS became the most powerful of the rebel armies within society.”.In recent years, an increasing quantity of atrocities and informal government procedures have been executed across the world, many of which begin within the roots of an individual in power. In response to these catastrophes, many are searching for answers as to how these disasters were instantiated, and how the correlation between power and leadership influence the outcome of atrocities evolving around the world. Based on the evidence, power and leadership are dissimilar due to the fact that both methods of ruling wage opposing levels of intimacy to their communities, advocating converse strategies in dealing with the running of a government; decisions that revolutionize economic and political situations faced by government parties indefinitely.
“Leadership can be defined as a process by which one individual influences others toward the attainment of group or organizational goals. Three point about the definition of leadership should be emphasized. First, leadership is a social influence process. Leadership cannot exist without a leader and one or more followers. Second, leadership elicits voluntary action on the part of followers. The voluntary nature of compliance separates leadership from other types of influence based on formal authority. Finally, leadership results in followers’ behavior that is purposeful and goal-directed in some sort of organized setting. Many, although not all, studies of leadership focus on the nature of leadership in the workplace.” (referenceforbusiness) When looking at the theory behind leadership this is the true sense of leadership. In this paper we will examine further into the leadership model that deals with team performance outcomes. We will also, look a couple of examples of contemporary leadership theories and further explain how a leader who follows the leadership theory how that leader would interact with members of their team to maxim the full strength of each team member.
Facilitative leadership is dependent on quantities and outcomes – not a skill, though it takes much skill to master. The efficiency of a group is directly related to the effectiveness of its process. If the group is high operational, the facilitative leader uses a light hand on the procedure.
Leadership is an essential element in every human group because it is a fundamental component without which would be hard to adequately orient efforts towards a common goal. According to Schneider and Schröder (2012, p. 269) “leadership is the set of capabilities that a person has to influence a group of people, making this team to work with enthusiasm in the achievement of goals and objectives”. Applying this concept to the business administration area, leadership is related to the managerial or leadership skills that an executive has to influence and direct others to achieve the goals and meet the needs of the company in an efficient and effective way. A leader seeks to develop the full potential of company and workers (Chase, Connelly & Griffith 2012)
