As a Naval Officer I had the opportunity to experience both leadership and management. Today's Navy operates with fewer people and resources than before. Therefore, leadership and management are more important than ever. Very early in my career I was taught leadership and as I advanced through the ranks I experienced management.

In the changing business environment, leaders of all organisations may face unprecedented uncertainty, especially the technology advancement and changes among the employees. To survive and succeed, leaders should have some necessary attributes. Meanwhile, some changes for leadership skills have to be made to confront the challenges.

To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.

Effective followership is an essential component of effective leadership in that, without good followers, the leader’s work is difficult and cumbersome. The role of the follower is many times understated. As illustrated by Kelley (1998), “effective followers are thinkers; energetic and assertive, self-starters, independent problem solvers, and carry out their tasks with these characteristics (p. 143). In corporate America the term used to describe a person in a position of power is “Manager”. A leader can be a manager, but a manager is not necessarily a leader. Leaders motivate, challenge, and influence others to achieve goals. Great leaders have the necessary skills and attributes which allow them to connect with the team and organization. Being a leader is not the same as managing an organization. Leader’s posses the interpersonal skills needed to influence others to achieve a goal willingly. Leading is a major part of a manager’s job. Leaders do not need to be a manager to lead people, but managers must know how to lead as well as manage.

The basic premise for leadership is the process of influencing other people to follow your lead in order to accomplish a goal. It is about the relationship between the leader and the followers. A good leader tries to motivate people to bring about positive changes revealing a common objective without using coercion or manipulation. Leadership is not about control, but permitting interaction and communication between the leader and the individual followers. With empowering others, leaders build a foundation of collaborative thinking and encourage an atmosphere of personal involvement; a leader can strengthen the respect and loyalty of his or her followers. John Wooden says,” the most powerful leadership tool you have is you’re own personal example.” Personally, a leader is one who serves others and in fact, I fit this position as I have led over 150 kids from my church to a charity event and organized them into 36 groups in 3 different locations during the Harvey trauma. This encounter has taught me a lot of problem solving skills as many of the locations did not have the required supplies to do the job. With my engineering skills, I was able to construct replacement tools to do the same job. For example, a chisel was not present at the site and we had to take out the soggy flood-water filled laminate, so I bent a pipe and was able to create a chisel out of it so that the work would go on. I also learned through this experience to have a positive attitude even when things don’t go as planned, as a negative attitude slows down the efficiency of the work. I was able to practice this lesson in my daily life and thus, create a charismatic personality. Last year, I was chosen to represent my church and attend the National Orthodox leadership conference and I learned very unique and strong leadership methods. I was one of the 20 kids nationally who were able to attend this conference because of my strong leadership skills. Through this conference, I was able to strengthen my leadership skills. Also, I was one of the representatives who got the privilege to go to the American Red Cross Leadership Conference from our Elkins High School Red Cross Club. There, I was able to strengthen my teamwork and leadership skills and transform into a strong leader that affects the society positively. I volunteer and serve in various community services like the Houston Food Bank to the American Red Cross with over 600 volunteer hours. I was also chosen last year to take part in the Houston Methodist Internship program where I was called to respond to the needs of the patients and act accordingly. I felt the need to try my best and work as hard as I can in this internship program as excellence in everything I do is one of my many morals. An added benefit to this learning process would be to also have a stronger foundation of followership knowledge, particularly international followership.
