Effective followership is an essential component of effective leadership in that, without good followers, the leader’s work is difficult and cumbersome. The role of the follower is many times understated. As illustrated by Kelley (1998), “effective followers are thinkers; energetic and assertive, self-starters, independent problem solvers, and carry out their tasks with these characteristics (p. 143). John Wooden says,” the most powerful leadership tool you have is you’re own personal example.” Personally, a leader is one who serves others and in fact, I fit this position as I have led over 150 kids from my church to a charity event and organized them into 36 groups in 3 different locations during the Harvey trauma. This encounter has taught me a lot of problem solving skills as many of the locations did not have the required supplies to do the job. With my engineering skills, I was able to construct replacement tools to do the same job. For example, a chisel was not present at the site and we had to take out the soggy flood-water filled laminate, so I bent a pipe and was able to create a chisel out of it so that the work would go on. I also learned through this experience to have a positive attitude even when things don’t go as planned, as a negative attitude slows down the efficiency of the work. I was able to practice this lesson in my daily life and thus, create a charismatic personality. Last year, I was chosen to represent my church and attend the National Orthodox leadership conference and I learned very unique and strong leadership methods. I was one of the 20 kids nationally who were able to attend this conference because of my strong leadership skills. Through this conference, I was able to strengthen my leadership skills. Also, I was one of the representatives who got the privilege to go to the American Red Cross Leadership Conference from our Elkins High School Red Cross Club. There, I was able to strengthen my teamwork and leadership skills and transform into a strong leader that affects the society positively. I volunteer and serve in various community services like the Houston Food Bank to the American Red Cross with over 600 volunteer hours. I was also chosen last year to take part in the Houston Methodist Internship program where I was called to respond to the needs of the patients and act accordingly. I felt the need to try my best and work as hard as I can in this internship program as excellence in everything I do is one of my many morals. Leaders motivate, challenge, and influence others to achieve goals. Great leaders have the necessary skills and attributes which allow them to connect with the team and organization. Being a leader is not the same as managing an organization. Leader’s posses the interpersonal skills needed to influence others to achieve a goal willingly. Leading is a major part of a manager’s job. Leaders do not need to be a manager to lead people, but managers must know how to lead as well as manage.
The idea of leadership and what qualifies some individuals as leaders is often shadowed by the harrowing misconceptions of its false reality. Yet, these misconceptions are taught and suggested so often in society that we all have come to believe them… Leaders are born; Leaders are charismatic; Leaders don’t work, they delegate; Leadership is an ability only given to a few; Leadership is about power, prestige, and status… Those are just a few of the many.
While followership is a relatively new field of study, it is still not as clearly understood as other more established fields and is often approached with hesitation. The term follower has a negative connotation, especially in the U.S., but they are not “passive recipients of the leader’s influence” they have an active role in the give and take relationship (Leroy, Aneseel, Gardener & Sels, 2015, p. 1681). It is observed that leaders’ strategic roles frequently reflect a high status with control over resources that cross boundaries while followers have lower status, less control over resources, and fill a narrow operational role (Manning & Robertson, 2016). Leaders cannot exist without followers and vice versa.
