Decision-making in the workforce is a process of responsibilities used by upper management to implement, enforce rules, regulations, and maintain a successful environment. Decision-making implemented more effectively by making a plan, thinking it through, accepting more than one opinion and determining what is best. However, decision-making often utilized more effectively by opening doors of opportunities for a suggestion, question, discussion, and feedback. Although, more involvement helps improve understanding, utilize behavior skills and present opportunities for better communication. Everyday life consists of decision-making, the right decision may not always be applied, but ensure room for improvement and opportunity. Individuals approached decision-making in many different ways. As stated by (Jones, Graham, & Bateman, 2006) decision making is a procedure used to recognize a problem, weigh the alternatives and evaluate a solution in which, certain situations will require different approaches to become effective.
The World Book Dictionary, Volume Two L-Z, 1980 edition, defines leadership as the condition of being a leader; the ability to lead; and guidance or direction. According to Nathan F. Iannone, author of many books on leadership, it can be defined as the art of influencing, directing, guiding, and controlling others in such a way as to obtain their willing obedience, confidence, respect and loyal cooperation in accomplishment of an objective. Leadership is a trait that is extremely valuable in any society. Leadership is known as a relational process of people attempting to make a difference in a situation. Because of this and the moral and social influence leaders have in our lives, it is very important to know more about it. Leaders must create the environment within which they and their group can succeed. They do this by sharing common values and goals, providing the resources necessary for goal attainment, and empowering their people to do the job. John Gardner tells us in his book On Leadership, "a leader must recognize the needs of the individuals, help the individuals see how those needs can be met, and give the group confidence that they can accomplish that result through their own efforts. A leader draws the best out of people, encouraging them to put forth their best effort rather than forcing them to do something. In my opinion the four strengths needed for a leadership potion are: planning, management, decision making, and encouragement.
If there is an effective process, even complex decisions can be made efficiently. Logical processes would lead to consistent and quality decision making. In order to make a decision, information has to be gathered. Plans should be made and past experiences should be considered. If past experiences show that the plan would not work, it is not good to go with that idea. When a plan is formulated after considering past experiences and with a strong sense that it would work this time, it would work. If it doesn’t work the plan is changed and a new one is formulated. Ideas and plans keep changing before a final decision is made.
When I was younger, I thought leadership was authority bestowed to people in positions of power because of their rank. To me, leadership was a word that evoked the image of a staunch and authoritarian CEO or military general inspiring large crowds with rousing speeches. Leaders were a special group of people who wielded the power of leadership with the grace and finesse to make all others stand in awe. However, as I became older and more established in my career, I saw that leadership was not always given to a person because of their rank. Programmed workflow is best practiced in computer based programs and platforms, especially in machine based manufacturing or applications such as 3-D printing. Verified or programmed decision making is decisive and predictable making it easier to measure quality. In the task environment, routine automated decision making is decisive due to the pre-programed nature or scripts. Enabling work groups to follow well established rules or guidelines. This also extends to training (walkthroughs), basic communication through the organization, product titles and even consumer based groups. Management and workgroups must use reasoning or decisive decision making in a methodical, reflective method, with consideration to many variables. Workflows take into consideration reasoning in order to create results from discerned data to well formed information and finished product.

An effective leader can be successful in all settings; it is important to develop a well-rounded skill set to combat different leadership roadblocks. When one thinks of a leader in a business organization, most likely they are thinking of formal leader. Sometimes this type of leader is referred to as a manager. It is important to note that just because an organization provides its manager with certain formal rights, there is no assurance they will lead effectively. On the other hand, non-sanctioned leadership is the ability to influence others outside the formal structure of the organization. People do not realize the importance of a leader with this capability, it is often overlooked. The fact of the matter is that this type of leader can be just as important or more important than the formal influence from a manager. Just as there are different types of leadership, there are different theories about the concept of leadership. Among these theories are Trait theories, behavioral theories, and contingent theories.

A quote that I thought would be good to share you all is quoted from a person named Vinci Lombardi. In his own words, “Leaders aren’t born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work.” From this quote, you figure out that leaders weren’t born as leaders; they worked hard to get to the level where they are now. After the reading and understanding of “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There”, I’ve come to learn I have a few of the “bad habits” the author pointed out. It’s a little too easy to look over the list of habits the author discusses and silently think to myself that at one time or another I am probably guilty of each one. A few that I am most guilty of are: Passing judgement, Starting with NO, BUT, HOWEVER, Failing to give proper recognition, Not listening, and Passing the buck (Goldsmith, 2007). Though I may not portray all of these bad habits on a daily basis, it’s the fact that I have exhibited them at some point in the past that is toxic to my leadership skills. I must not only point out and take responsibility for these habits, but it is also important to know how they negatively affect others around me and how I can easily change them with small behavior adjustments.
