As Finkelman (2006) stated, “Mentoring, and important career development to that can be used by nurses any type of set or specialty, can be used to develop the critical leadership skills needed by nurses. All successful leaders have had mentors are our mentors” (Finkelman,2006, p. 390).

The first comment before the article starts is vastly important. Most effective leaders use a variety of leadership styles in order to achieve maximum performance from organizations, teams, and individuals. The ability to act as a chameleon as a leader has huge benefits and allows you to tackle many different types of leadership situations. In order to achieve the best results a leader must be able to use many different leadership styles to accomplish their organizations goals.

One of the challenges facing nurses today is learning how to be an effective leader. Assessing and analyzing the style of leadership the nurse possesses is the first step in facing the challenge. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and understand the characteristics of my style of leadership from an assessment performed by Gallup Strength Finders and DiSC and compare the strengths I have in common with Eleanor Roosevelt.

The belief of leadership is constantly changing, with many theories and frameworks available. Today’s organizations face ever-increasing change, which includes increased patient demands and work needs, which requires a more adaptive flexible leadership that is becoming increasingly important in the 21st century. Leadership theory and philosophy can be divided into several well-known styles. Within this paper, we will discuss the basis of autocratic, democratic, laissez faire, servant, charismatic, transformational, and situational styles of leadership within the nursing profession, then conclude the writer’s personal philosophies of leadership.

“Just as students have different personalities, they also have different ways of learing (Slavin, 107).” Learning styles are another important factor to incorporate when implementing the best learning environment. Learning styles are defined as an individual's mode of gaining knowledge. The most common learning styles addressed are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Auditory leaners understand information through hearing. Visual learners need more visual aids in the learning process, such as diagrams, webs, or pictures. Kinesthetic learners learn better by using manipulatives or by being physically involved in the learning process. Learning styles is a piece of the “backbone” of differentiated learning. Both are used to individualize instruction to help students achieve the most success.

The leadership development goal is to assist and direct personal efforts towards professional development in healthcare. To achieve this, this goal requires the use of mentorship programs and mentors to guide in increasing morale to work, achieving maximum career development, and realizing growth in the nursing profession by the end of the academic year. The goals overall aim entails developing competencies and skills that will increase the quality of care in my career.

The first book assigned to me for my capstone leadership book is Trust matters: Leadership for successful schools. This book details three principals and how each of them has different leadership styles when it comes to developing trust. This book puts trust from leadership positions in perspective from the three case studies point of views. In my years of teaching I have experienced all three types of leaders in this book. As a future administrator I want to strive to be like Brenda. I want to be a balanced leader, but at this time I find myself being more like Fred. I will have to develop my skills to not shy away from conflict all the time when I’m in my leadership role. I have to figure out how to balance the peace keeper mentality of Fred and the overzealousness of Gloria to become the balanced Brenda from the case studies. I want my staff to trust me and I want to instill trust into them so they have a sense of comfort in doing their jobs and being leaders themselves on campus.

Mentorship is an integral role played by an experienced nurse to guide and train, less experienced nurse in their clinical area (Ali & Panther, 2008). Mentors’ are required to facilitate learning in order to help nurses in developing essential skills and assess their proficiency in clinical practice (NMC, 2008). Within this portfolio I will show that I have facilitated learning and assessment in my practice area.

According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success.
