ESSAY LEADING A TEAM INTO CHANGE SUBMITTED BY BHARATH KUMAR CIB0000243 2A, DHSM LV7 TO KAYLENE TRIBE DUE DATE – 12/12/14 I would like to start by defining the leadership, which I believe is a quality or discipline that a leader should possess in order to guide people or organisation towards goal setting, maximise their efforts and achieve the proposed goals. A leader is an ideal mentor or pioneer who leads by examples. Leader encourages, promotes and strengthens the qualities of the followers, so that they can perform with their maximum potential. . Successful leaders have the ability to set and accomplish testing objectives, to make quick and definitive move even in difficult circumstances, to outflank their competitions, to go out on a limb and to persist despite failures. Clinical leadership (Barr & Dowding, 2008) is a whole new concept which can be implied to an action by a leader which is intended towards the well being of the patient and better healthcare. This can be achieved by encouraging and educating the staff and designing quality service plan for the clients. I am the leader of a team which is the part of the Aged-care health provider
Nursing is hierarchical hence should engage in different types of leadership activities in their routine care delivery
A leader can be defined as a person who has the ability to influence people to achieve certain goals. According to Marcus & Huston (2015), it is very important to understand that a job title does not make a person a leader. Only a person’s behavior can tell us if he/she holds leadership role (p 34). To be a leader, a person must be able to be in front of everybody, taking risks, inspiring other’s actions, advocating for others. The next interview will underline how the manager on medical-surgical floor is working to achieve a better quality of work on her unit, and also, how she is leading her staff in maintaining a safety environment for the patients and for the staff, too. It is well known that teamwork brings the most satisfying results. Therefore, in order to implement a plan, a leader must have a united and dedicated team.
Effective leadership will be a vital part in organizational collaboration (NHS Five year forward view, 2014). The expected outcome from leaders is very high. The traditional leadership approach will normally focus on the specific actions which will not be appropriate in a collaborative environment. The collaborative leadership should be focusing more on processes and skills. The Collaborative Leader should have strong inter-personal skills, strategic action and thinking, networking etc. Their role should consist of mediator, convenor and driver to adopt any difficult circumstances (Williams, 2007). While the system expects more from the leaders in health care settings, the leaders in turn expect more from their colleagues and staff. The patients
All the same, a lot of nurses never realized of becoming a leader. There have been nurses who have leadership qualities in areas of designs, implementations, and evaluations, as well as advocacies” in the current transformation (Cohen, M. & Walker, A. 2010). With this quality they have restructured and reshaped their abilities to function in different areas of health system. It means nurses are using their leadership skills to perform as collaborators with other professionals. There is essence of having competent leaders in health care in other to achieve the goal of creating a change in health care. These leaders are not only at bed side but are also conspicuous at other areas such as executive level and boardrooms. Nurses work together with other experts in different disciplines of health care, and are responsible for submitting their contributions to produce high quality care.
Leadership is essential to health care. Successful leadership depends on your ability to understand and deliver what you patients and their families, the marketplace and regulators expect (Tillman, 2015). Only focusing on delivering quality is not enough, a leader must also understand the capability of their workforce, business partners and the suppliers of critical goods and services (Tillman, 2015). All these skills and attributes together work towards creating a systems thinker and good leader (Tillman, 2015).
Please tell me how do you lead your team medical member ? How would you describe yourself as a leader ?
In this essay, leadership will be defined and analysed. A detailed leader profile from my workplace will be developed and described using transformational theory, as this is the most adequate theory to describe the performance, effectiveness and styles used by the leader to achieve the objectives and goals
Leaders had been described as a person directing the activities towards a shared goal. The leaders’ key role is involving group activities and coping with change. In healthcare most of the leadership was developed within a healthcare context but were usually developed for the business setting and then applied to healthcare. Researchers had provided little evidence that such leadership initiatives are associated with improvements in patients care or even the organizational outcomes. Leadership theories are dynamic and continue to change over time (Al-Sawai,
Health professionals, including leaders and management, have many goals of providing and caring for health service users (patients) and making continuous improvements to meet all of the goals in order to be successful. Quality healthcare improvement requires not only change from within, but adaptation to the system is also necessary (Swanwick and McKimm, 2011). Making improvements and providing for the patients is what defines what kind of leadership and management are needed to better serve, overcoming the many challenges, and looking into future investments in order to improve these skills.
In the healthcare industry, there are two types of leader. First is the governing body and the second is the chief executive managers or other senior managers. Physicians are also called the leaders because they can take decisions for the patients. In a hospital, leadership group comprises the leaders of the organized medical staff. Only if these leadership groups work together, collaboratively, to exercise the organization’s leadership function, can the organization reliably achieve its goals.
Clinicians have an important role in managing patients in a way that must fit modern healthcare setting; they must have managerial skills to fulfill their responsibilities as clinical leaders. Effective knowledge of healthcare leadership will allow them to be more in control not only on patient’s health but also be aware of the healthcare facility’s policies and budgets, increase the efficiency and productivity of the healthcare system and provide quality and improved healthcare services. They will be able to translate and use data for comprehensive long and short-term goals; and encourage exceptional health care for patients and financial health for their organizations as well. A leader in general is a person who has a vision that is well communicated to their followers and can build needed trust among colleagues by doing the proper actions to fulfill their personal leadership
In creating an organization, like a cardiac rehabilitation team, a successful leader must learn the art of dealing success in their own lives. Then apply this knowledge to shape, train and guide success in his team members (Tearle, 2014). “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader” (Adams, 2014). A leader is a supervising or administering head of a group or organization. Leadership is defined in many ways and it is the basic criteria of the nurse manager in a clinical team. It is a method of shared influence, to achieve a common goal.
This final assignment, Leading a Team into Change, begins as usual with a pseudo settings that I am a leader of an inter-disciplinary team responsible for rehabilitation of clients into their respective abodes. My company is then extending its services because I got new contract from the Ministry of Health. This paper provides what kind of health service I wanted to
A team leader is the individual one which provides direction, commands and regulation within a team, he is also a part of team but plays various role for the purpose of achieving a certain goal. An effective leader will know their team members very well as strengths, weaknesses and inspirations. Actually team leader act various roles in an organization or company .Team leader always developing a strategy for the team to reach its destiny and coordinating and balancing the disagreeing interests of all members. A leader able to perform the task and to support the whole team during difficult conditions and always setup the positive attitude within the team, so without team leader any team can’t achieve success.( Burns, 1978)
The definition of leadership is commonly known as an “ability to influence a group toward the achievement of goals “(Robbins, p.156). I believe that it is necessary for leaders to posses this ability, to become as effective as possible in an organisation/workplace or even their subordinates to complete entrusted tasks and goals in a perfect manner.
