Nowadays, League of Legends has impacted adolescents all over the world. By breaking down the impact of gaming, I look at how studies show gaming impacts adolescents. By doing this, we will notice League of Legends on adolescents display a negative impact while also noticing the struggles of communication with family and friends. The evolution of gaming has changed drastically over the past sixty years. From 1958’s “Tennis for Two” all the way till 2016’s newest “Oculus Rift”, there has been a significant amount of change. The “Tennis for two” was designed using an oscilloscope and played with two custom aluminum controllers. The development behind it is that American physicist, William Higinbotham, created the game after learning the computer …show more content…
Addiction in adolescents involves instant messaging, gambling, and gaming. Ph.D student of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hanyun Huang, and Director of Center and Communication Research of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Louis Leung conducted a research who the addicts are, what their symptoms are and to what extent they are addicted to texting. Their research conducted out of three hundred thirty randomly stratified adolescents in China, 95.5percent of participants used instant messaging and 9.8percent were considered instant messaging addicts. Adolescents have been communication more and more by texting. Another research done by Federal Communications Center, found that adolescents texting while driving has increased by 50% since 2013. This shows that the urge of texting causes an addiction in adolescents. Another similar problem is addiction to gambling. In a random sample of eight hundred teens done by Jeffrey L. Derevensky, author of Journal of Gambling Studies, 80.2percent reported they had gambled in 2012. Within that same group, 35.1percent gambling a minimum once per week. The reason why adolescents have addictions to gambling is because of Serotonin(Holst 77). Serotonin is a chemical nerve cells produce and sends signals between your nerve cells and helps regulate your mood. When your serotonin levels are low, your cravings increase and depression and anxiety can result. When this happens, any person …show more content…
There is a huge online amount of people watching professional gamers. In 2013, seventy one million people had watched the League of Legend Season 3 World Championships according to Superdata, a games research company. Watching other people play video games- or eSports- is a big business. 35 million watched from the US, 23 million of which were adolescents(Mironi 1). The question is why would people want to watch other gamers? SuperData’s Ceo Joost Van Dreunen responded “They want to be able to learn new moves and improve their skills”. Multiplayer games and shooter games takes a long time to master(Leo 3). The better players watch for hours and study the professional gamers to see how they can improve
The first important impact of playing violent video games is they spend their most time on it and start to live in fantasy world. Video games are ruining the life of many teenagers. There was one of the high school student who said that “I am addicted to online video games. If I am not playing, I am thinking about playing. I have, like, no real friends” (Gomez).
Videogames has been affecting teenagers the most out of all the age groups. From cell phones, to computers and gaming consoles,
Gaming has a special place in the hearts of many because the games use can vary from user to user, it could be a be a form entertainment, to stress relief or even becoming a professional gamer. Today the gaming world has hit an astronomical at 1.8 billion players worldwide and is continually growing. Many have argued that gaming has influenced negative behavior, however, through the abundant amount benefits gaming provides and the constant stream of fresh innovations gaming has proven to have a positive impact on society.
Parents have always claimed that video games corrupt a child’s well-being, but many of them don 't know what video games are actually doing to our minds and body. In fact, video games affect several different aspects of our lives, including our social lives, physical health, and behavior tendencies. With video games becoming an active member in almost everyone 's daily life, a more intrusive study is required, detailing the precise effects and what exactly their implications could be for this up-and-coming generation.
There have been studies that state that “high video game usage was associated with a 1.75 times the odds of high intellectual functioning and 1.88 times the odds of high overall school competence” (Time Spent Playing…). Today, schools are also “giving away scholarships for “League of Legends” professional gamers” (Levy). A possible concern is “gamers are less empathetic, especially after playing benign games” (Wells). Studies show that gamers who play violent and sexist games such as “Grand Theft Auto V” are less sympathetic and compassionate about females. With this being a possibility, it is indeed unhealthy, but it is because gamers are actually controlling the character and making all the decisions in the game. They are not guided by something or someone else. They are on their own and this means that it actually “affects their thoughts, feelings, and behavior, at least in short term” (Wells). As long as it’s only short term, then it will be fine in the long run.
As social media continues to expand and change, the unswerving usage of video games in children and adolescents has also augmented. These video games permits its youth to explore a new form of entertainment and communication in a way to expand their knowledge over certain interests, trend or insights. As the consistency of these video games develop, growing concerns of prospective issues such as behavior, academic performance, and their physical functioning may reflect negatively among children and adolescents (Cesarone, 2013). As the expansion of these video games occurs, and more violence is reflected upon them, many numerous disastrous results can be developed over the years that reflect the negative effects of these violent video games.
Good Morning, everyone, i'm going to start off with a poll of who all plays video games in this class. A lot of you/ maybe not too many in this class play video games and/but, as of 2015, 42% of Americans played video games at least 3 hours a week, which is roughly 135 million of the total population. This proves that video games play a large role in our society. Today I’m going to be speaking about the psychological effects that video games have on youth, but in order to do that, I need to inform you of the evolution of violent video games, the effects of violent video games, and the positive effects of video games.
The roar of the crowd, the rush of adrenaline as you watch your favorite team take the field, the excitement of watching your team score, and how you feel during a close game are all aspects of watching sports that people tend to identify with. Sports aretraditionally been thought of as physical activities. However, in recent years Esports, better known as competitive gaming, have begun to take the world by storm with record prize pools and viewership numbers. Fans of competitive gaming get to experience of all the same aspects that people that watch physical sports. Both sports and competitive gaming have organizations and salaries for players who are also allowed to take on sponsorships for themselves. In all sports they require some type of teamwork and coordination to make certain plays happen, but competitive gaming in a game such as League of Legends has a far different lifestyle than say, football. These two sports have many similarities like; their reliance on teamwork to win, the players training days, their type of internal structure, and the structure of their competitions and leagues; but also differ in multiple ways such as organizations and players have different opportunities to succeed or fail. Physical sports and Esports show to be very similar and vastly different.
Video games can also teach players life lessons without the players feeling like they are learning. Video games can teach players how risk taking can pay off, how to deal with challenges, how to find an alternate route to their goal, and how to manage and deal with frustration (Marcovitz 55). Video games can also “improve spatial reason and focus, memory formation, strategic planning, muscle control, and fine motor skills” (Netzley 42). One business owner has a section of time in the work day where employees can sit together and play video games, he has this to say, “When employees play together, they learn team-building concepts that they can later use in their professional roles” (Marcovitz 58). Just like in real life, video game problems grow
It’s preposterous and a dream come true, the profession of an elite gamer. In this day and age, this recreational activity is considered a career. The professional sports they had in previous generations are transitioning into eSports, one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, South Korea, and other places around the world. “To put the skyrocketing of eSport viewership into perspective, the 2013 League of Legends Season 3 World Championship’s thirty-two million viewers surpassed both the BCS National Championship and game seven of the NBA Finals by seven million, and more than doubled the viewership of the World Series.” (Kasten) With this career, however retirement comes quickly and fame dissipates gradually. The career of a famous professional gamer is very dynamic and never set in stone. Although it is theoretically an enjoyable career, professional gamers develop huge drawbacks which include persistent stress, video-game related health problems, and early retirement, which leaves the gamer living under inhumane circumstances. The negative outcomes that result from the famous gamer profession, greatly outweigh the positives.
“Teenagers today often spend a great deal of time playing video games. These games are fun and engaging and young people often feel like playing games is a great thing to do in their spare time. However, you shouldn’t spend too much time gaming and there are a number of reasons for this: it’s unhealthy, you should spend more time studying, and you need to socialize more.”
According to CNN, 90% of America’s youth ranging from eight to sixteen year olds play about thirteen hours of video games a week (Saidi and Gross). Video games have become such a prominent part of our society and have affected viewers in a negative way through the countless violent acts portrayed throughout the games, promoting violent behaviors among the youth in our society.
The future of entertainment is greatly entrenched in technology and video games are an integral part of this. Video gaming is utilized as a great pastime and leisure activity by many people across the world. The number of people who play video games is particularly high among adolescents with a recent survey showing that 97% of Americans aged between 12-17 regularly play video games (Wittek et al, 2016). However, despite the entertainment benefits of video games, overplaying violent video games negatively impacts of teenagers and adolescents. The purpose of this paper is to explore the negative impacts of excessive violent video gaming on adolescents with the sole aim of informing classmates on the disastrous effects of overplaying violent video games.
In today’s society, the vast majority of adolescents spend their free time indoors. Many of those hours are enjoyed playing video games, a habit which teenagers will never hear the end of from their parents. “These games will ruin you”, they say, “It makes you angry and violent”, they say, but does it really? Media often portrays videogames as detrimental to mental health, and this topic is especially scrutinized today because of the sudden popularity of the recent public mass shootings and gun violence; however, past and more recent studies show that this is absolutely not true. In fact, the positives of gaming seem to massively outweigh the negatives.
When the word ”sport” is brought up in conversation, people automatically think of someone sprinting toward the end zone with a football in their hands or someone shooting a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounds. Even the less recognized sports such as table tennis and archery are highlighted during the Olympic games. The last thing that people would call a sport is something that requires you to be decisive and have lightning-fast reflexes. It demands that you to put in multiple hours of practice every day, all while never moving from your chair or couch. Video gaming is an activity that is enjoyed by millions of kids, teens, and adults all around the world. However, for a slightly smaller group of people, video games are more than just a leisure activity. For some, video games are a job.
