In the past years, there has been a major paradigm shift in the management of non-small cell lung cancer also known as (NSCLC). NSCLC should now be further sub-classified by histology and driver mutation if one is known or present. Translational research results now allow such mutations to be inhibited by either receptor monoclonal antibodies (mAb) or small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI). Whilst empirical chemotherapy with a platinum-doublet remains the gold standard for advanced NSCLC without a known driver mutation, targeted therapy is pushing the boundary to significantly improve patient outcomes and quality of life. Uncle on father’s side, Reynaldo Vinzon, developed diabetes at age 55; patient is unknown of type of diabetes. The purpose of cancer is to attach to a blood cell in your body and cause a plague within itself, causing the body to initially shut down and die. This disease contains many forms and have many causes to it. However its main goal is to destroy the human body.

The leading cause of cancer death for both men and women in the United States and worldwide is lung cancer. Lung cancer is responsible for thirty percent of cancer deaths in the United States. The deaths caused by breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer combined do not add up to the deaths that lung cancer causes. In 2007, 158,683 people, 88,243 men and 70,354 women died from lung cancer in the United States (Eldridge, 2012). Out of the 158,683 people that died from lung cancer in 2007, 135,000 of them died of lung cancer caused by smoking cigarettes. The overall survival rate of those with lung cancer is at about fifteen percent.
Imagine you are running and with each step your breath becomes shorter and shorter. Your lungs are working twice as hard and you have not even gone half way. Sweat is running down your forehead as is becomes harder for you to breath. You used to be able to run with such ease but now you are out of breath. While thinking back at what has changed to make your breathing so heavy you drop your pack of cigarettes. Smoking cigarettes is a dangerous habit. Not only can it cause cancer and other health problems to yourself but it can also pose a risk to others. Many people get addicted to smoking cigarettes. They may have been pressured into trying one or have seen a commercial about smoking and wanted to try it out for himself. Some find pleasure in smoking and use it as a relaxation from their stressful lives but that is not a good enjoyment.
Lungs are a major part of the respiratory system. They are responsible for filtering carbon dioxide out of the air we inhale and sending oxygen into the bloodstream to aid in breathing. When that system is tampered with, things can go wrong. Different treatment methods have different levels of success and each target certain areas of the cancer in attempt to destroy the disease. Lung cancer is the growth of abnormal cells in one or both of the lungs. This is usually in the cells that line the air passages. The abnormal cells that do not develop into healthy lung tissues divide rapidly to form tumors. Lungs are the spongy organs in the chest that take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide when breathing. They are essential to live, so lung cancer can be very dangerous. This disease is quite common, making it important to know at least a little bit about. Lung cancer is a disease that has many causes and life-affecting symptoms; even though treatment can be long and hard, if caught early enough, there is a good chance of survival.
According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the most common type of cancer in the world and has a mortality rate higher than colon, prostate, ovarian, and breast cancers combined.1 There are 3 types of lung cancer including non-small cell lung cancer, small-cell lung cancer, and lung carcinoid tumor. Approximately 85% of lung cancer cases are non-small cell, which include subtypes of squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.2 Although less common, making up 10-15% of lung cancers, small-cell lung cancer is known for its rapid growth and spread.2 The types of lung cancer vary greatly in the prognosis and management of disease, as rate of growth, risk of metastasis, rate of recurrence, and treatment options are different with each.2 Physical therapy serves an integral role in the management of patients with lung cancer by providing interventions to optimize pulmonary and cardiovascular function.
In order to fulfill the requirements of the assigned project, our group performed research related tasks. Research is ultimately about assigning facts, figures and arguments to larger ideas for practical reasons that hopefully produce more benefits than not. Our group's topic deals with the disease of lung cancer. In our quest to learn more about this reality of life, it became necessary to implement the research process to further our knowledge and complete the necessary requirements of this project.
