What defines a martyr? Why is it that only few people are bestowed the honor of becoming a martyr? A martyr is not only a person who suffers for a cause but who also loves that cause and dies fighting for it. In the novel In the Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez uses the character of Minerva Mirabal to show what martyrdom is and that becoming a martyr is more difficult than most think. Because of Minerva’s involvement with the revolution, she has suffered the repercussions of disobeying Trujillo and his infamous SIM; emotionally she is torn up. Then after she suffers through as much as a person can bear, she is delivered the most severe punishment of all, death. Minerva Mirabal proves what it is to be a martyr because …show more content…
She is well on her way, thanks to Trujillo, who allowed her to go to university, but then is stripped of that opportunity when Trujillo does not allow her to receive her practitioner’s license. Instead of fighting for it, Minerva lets it go, and although she is furious, she knows that this will leave more time for the blossoming revolt. Minerva also gives up her potential love for Lío when he announces he must leave the country. Minerva states that “I was relieved that circumstances would be resolving things between us, (Alvarez 86)” saying that even thought she liked Lío very much, and more could possibly happen between them, she knew it was a good thing that he was leaving, so she could focus more on the impending revolution.
Because of the nearness of the revolution, Minvera knows that if she makes one wrong move or cowards in the face of danger, her support from the people will weaken. No, Minerva must prove to the whole of the Dominican Republic that she not is afraid of Trujillo. And she does prove this; even in right up in the face of danger, Minerva stays brave for herself, her family and for her country. Once the sisters have been released, they make a point of visiting their husbands in prison regularly. Then, there is one day they plan to go visit, November 25, 1960, when all day Minvera is advised against leaving the house. Minvera decides she must, for the people to know that she is not afraid of

As Tim Burton, a famous director and producer once said, ¨one person's craziness is another person's reality¨ This directly applies to the Dominican Republic during the time of Rafael Trujillo's rule. Minerva Mirabal, is a woman who risks her life rebelling against her powerful dictator and his regime. Her ultimate goal is freedom and her rights. However, Minerva has not always shown disdain and hate towards Trujillo. Minerva's views on Trujillo and the regime change throughout the book. All four sisters reject their stereotypical role as women in the society by standing up for their beliefs and the revolution. When Minerva said,” It’s about time we women had a voice in running our country,”(Alvarez ?Chapter 1?) shows how outspoken she is about her country. The way Minerva demands equality shows the influence that men have over women in the Dominican culture. During the 1960s, the men expected women to be housewives, and to just cook and clean. In the book when Jaimito says,” The Mirabal sisters like to run their men, that was the problem. In his house, we was the one to wear the pants.”(Alvarez, 176-177) That shows that men expect women to be below them.
Julia Alvarez’s novel In the Time of the Butterflies shows the lack of fairness in society and the importance of maintaining a strong family bond. Trujillo was not fair between men and women and granting men the rights to do whatever they want. The Mirabal sisters’ revolutionary against president Trujillo and fighting for freedom of the country and its people. In Saudi Arabia women are now granted to drive, but there some other things that men can do but women cannot. The Mirabal family has a strong maintain of a family bond. Minerva is one of the four sisters who is brave and had the courage to stand for others and started the revolution against the president.
Minvera Mirabal stood as a symbol of revolution to those who wanted to see the downfall of Rafael Trujillo. Her and two of her three sisters were advocates of the revolution until the sad ending of the story in which the three sisters were killed in a car crash. But before the ending of the Mirabal sisters can be discussed, the life of Minerva and the point she developed her political principles must be addressed.
Minerva was not afraid of Trujillo like everyone else. She had her own opinion of him and wasn't afraid to express that opinion in her own actions. Minerva thought to herself, "Under the tablecloth, a hand is exploring the inner folds of a woman's thigh. I

Trujillo invades Minerva's personal space and she slaps him because she knows who he truly is.
There are several events that lead the Mirabal sisters to oppose the “Trujillo regime”. The first event is at their high school play when Sanita almost shot Trujillo with the arch. After that day Minerva never saw Sanita again. Also, Trujillo’s party play a big role in the events that lead the Mirabal sisters to oppose to his regime. Trujillo invite the Mirabal family to his party, where he asked Minerva to dance with him. Trujillo was inappropriate with Minerva, and Minerva act with an instinct response (with a slap). That respond was really scandalous because everyone sees Trujillo as the God of the Dominican Republic. That lead Trujillo taking Minerva’s father into jail, where after his release die because he was tortured by the military.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the Terror as an instrument of the French Revolution.
This section of chapters was exciting because I sympathized with Patria not knowing whether she wants to be a nun or if she wants to marry her boyfriend. For me, the book starts to gain momentum because while in the first three chapters, Minerva comes to the realization of their dictatorial government; in these chapters she becomes more involved with a man who is leading part of the revolution to end President Trujillo’s regime, so it’s showing more commitment from her. These chapters display Minerva’s strength as a woman, from her slapping the president after he made advances on her and her standing up to her father after finding his other family. It’s empowering to see a woman in the 1950’s to not be oppressed by a man. The romance and the
