Mission and Vision
A mission statement communicates the organization’s reason for being, and how it aims to serve its key stakeholders, customers, suppliers. It defines the purpose and values of the organization. A mission statement talks about the present leading to its future. It helps in tactical planning.
A vision statement is sometimes called a “picture of your company in the future” but it is so much more than that. Vision statement is the inspiration, the framework for all strategic planning of the organization.

Tesco’s management recognize the key role that its mission, vision and strategies play in its success and use a range of key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor and evaluate its performance. Tesco is one of the largest retailers in the world. This success has not come about by chance but is the result of effective leadership and management. The setting of a clear vision is central to Tesco’s success, supported by a commitment to establishing and monitoring specific objectives and devising strategies to ensure these are achieved.
According to some researches, since vision and mission statement effect strategic management of the organization, the firms that have a formalized mission statement have twice the average return on shareholders’ equity than those firms without a formalized mission statement. Another report show that there are 30 percent higher return on certain financial measures between the firms use mission statement than those firm do not have it. Therefore, we can see the necessary of vision and mission statement for a company in model business.
In this article I will be writing about two types of businesses one which makes a profit and the other which does not make a profit. I will inform and explain the purpose of the business so why it is there, also the type of business it is and the ownerships and also what it provides and who’s interests it serves.
The Mission Statement is a vital component in the strategic planning of a business organization. Creating a mission is one of the first actions an organization should take. This can be a building block for an overall strategy and development of more specific functional strategies (Abrahams, 1995). By defining a mission an organization is making a statement of organizational purpose.
An aim is a long-term goal of which takes short – term goals to achieve this which are called objectives.

Most organization have develop an element called a mission statement. A mission statement describes and helps focus the attention of organizational members and external constituents on the organization's core purpose. Mission statements for any organization are today a foundation stone for defining its activities, attitudes and culture. Thus the mission statement influences the organization to a very great extent. Thus the mission statement shows the degree of internalization and the general principles of governance adopted by the institution, and its core values and responsibilities and the area of interest. (Yopp, 2008)
According to Pearce and Robinson, “A vision statement presents the firm’s strategic intent that focuses the energies and resources of the company on achieving a desirable future,” (2009, p. 37). To put it simply the vision will paint a picture of what it will be in the future. The vision statement is going to be where the owners or board of directors, see the business going, and will change as the business grows. In order to achieve that goal it is good to have it in writing to help all those who are in the business visualize where the business is going and helping make that vision a reality in the future.
An organizations existence is based on its mission statement. The mission statement of an organization identifies the people who it serves and states the standards of practice, ethics, and principles for which it believes in. An organization’s vision statement looks into the future and states goals the organization wishes to accomplish (Marquis & Huston, 2012). The mission and vision statement are important for driving the climate and culture of the organization.

Basically, it should include what you will provide, who you will serve and also highlight your key attributes that should distinguish your organization from your competitors. There are no specific rules to develop a mission statement, what really matters is that should be a reflection and a helpful synopsis of the organization as well as it should speak to your stakeholders. Some characteristics that makes a mission statement successful is when it is succinct and can be printed in the back of a business card, when it is memorable and unique. Lastly it ought to be realistic and current, for instance, the mission should be a description of the present and not the future as well as it can not change constantly, in this case, when the firm changes its priorities, it is necessary to think if the new directions will affect its mission.
