Since always, music has been an important aspect in human culture because it has many applications and uses in human life. It is consider that music plays an important role to human beings, and it is reflect in many different ways. In medicine, music takes a significant part because it can be used to improve human health and life quality; for example, music can helps to reduce stress, cure illness, or produce happiness. Also, it is known that music can have great impact during pregnancy, or it can benefit premature babies. During the gestational period, the baby is exposed to different sounds and noises, which will affect his behavior and skills. The first sounds that a baby hears are the sound of the womb, and those that come from his mother; such as, her beating heart, her gurgling stomach and her breathing. Also, the voice of the mother is an important sound, which the baby listen to very carefully because it differs from what he usually hears. “Some researchers have discovered that newborns become calmer and more self-regulated when exposed to intrauterine sound,” (Whitwell, 2) this is the reason why we found the sound of the ocean and water so relaxing. It is also consider that all these first sound would later develop our sense of rhythm. During pregnancy, it is vital for the mother to stay calm and stress free. In our modern world, life is surrounding by many factors that can trigger a mother to be anxious and tense; however music therapy can provide a cool off
Music Therapy is used for many reasons and can be helpful in many ways. Music has been proven to be a therapeutic service to people because it’s helped people to contain themselves and even express themselves through the music that they listen to. This treatment is beneficial to many humans because it’s a good way to help one’s emotions without any medication (American Music Therapy Association). For example, music is used to treat pain and reduce stress. In Amy Novotney’s article about music therapy, she says, “The beep of ventilators and infusion pumps, the hiss of oxygen, the whir of carts and the murmur of voices as physicians and nurses make rounds — these are the typical noises a premature infant hears spending the first days of life in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). While the sounds of such life-saving equipment are tough to mute, a new study suggests that some sounds, such as lullabies, may soothe pre-term babies and their parents, and even improve the infants' sleeping and eating patterns, while decreasing parents' stress (Pediatrics, 2013)” (Novotney). Another example of how music is a reliable therapeutic resource is for people with autism. In Catherine Ulbricht’s article, she states that “People who have autism spectrum disorders often show a heightened interest and response to music. This may
Art has undoubtedly become a decisive aspect of our culture; embedded in the way we learn and grow on a daily basis. Art forms such as music, television and dance dominate our society as an outlet of freedom of speech for humanity. The evolution of music has rapidly exceeded its original classifications, developing new genres with greater appeal to an audience, hence its influence on society has expedited. In recent times, lyrics (specifically rap lyrics) have been introduced into the court room as a form of documented confessional evidence, evidently challenging law’s authoritative nature. This essay will closely follow the genre of rap and its relationship with law, through cases based in the United States of America (USA). In addition, the trial of Simon Bikindi in Rwanda and Smith v The Queen will be used to form an acute analysis on the influencing factors of relevance, identity, freedom of speech and current constitutional law.
One could continue to go on and on with so many historical examples of the therapeutic use of music on the human body. But from the humble beginnings of music, the art of composing has continued to grow drastically over time. Today there is much research and data proving scientifically that music is even more recognized for its benefits and even detriment on the physiological and psychological systems of the body (Cook). Research recently, after about 250 years of separation, is once again uniting medicine, health psychology and
Atlee and Matthews predecessor named Dr. Benjamin Rush, studied and proposed that music also can help treat diseases (American Music Therapy Association, 2017). Music therapy is the art of soothing or relaxing an individual or stabilizing an individual’s mood by playing or listening to certain sounds and music.
What remains to be discovered is exactly what types of music along with what qualities of sound are necessary to help maintain the body’s homeostasis. As I begin my medical career, and with the growing field of music therapy, I will be hearing more about music and its relation with medicine. Perhaps one day, I may conduct my own research on how the sound of music can influence medical
By exploring sources that address the topic of premature infants and music therapy, the author of this paper discusses about the effect of music on specific common issue that the NICU can cause to premature infants. The effect of music therapy on stabilizing premature infants’ breathing and heart rate is addressed. The author also points out that music can be a stimulus for premature infants to learning life-matter skill such as the sucking behavior.
The types of emotions that are developed in the womb differ. Babies in the womb are supposed to be able to recognize love, happiness, sadness and stress. Talking or playing music is believed to comfort a baby in the womb, and help the baby
Although some may suggest music can only serve for entertainment, music imposes a direct impact on the ideals and actions of today’s culture. In the past, the music of a culture greatly impacts the people and speaks what the people felt afraid to express. Different types of music reach different areas of the human brain, thus affecting the way people act in various ways. Music possesses such a deep impact on human brains it affects the way we act and process different situations we go through. Although music can serve entertainment purposes it affects our brains and actions deeply.
Reviews show that music therapy for premature infants has the potential to improve feeding behaviors and sucking patterns as noise can significantly impact the maturation of the premature neonate. “Recorded music, parent voices, and sung lullabies have been shown to increase oxygen saturation, nonnutritive sucking, and weight gain in premature infants” (Loewy, Stewart, Dassler, Telsey, Homel, 2013). However, there is a caution against potential danger of over stimulating the
Crowe (2004) has explained that in the past, there were two ideas about music for healing. First, the sound of music can effect to human body and internal organs. An important part of the healing process is to repair the problem with song. They believed that illness can be healed by a medicine song. Medicine songs all over the world have a similar melody such as a strong melody to attract listeners, and a slow tempo to make them feel relaxed. Also, the sound combination has a positive effect on patients, which can reduce illness. Second, music is used for general wellness (p.7). Melody and rhythm can make people feel relaxed and balanced in their emotion. These two basic ideas were used with the belief that it can help people of every
Music has affected every person in some form or way. It has a way of squeezing creativity out of the blandest of personalities. Starting as a freshman, I did not look forward to English 1101 because I thought it would take away my creativity. My biggest fear was that there would be limits to the amount of individuality that I would be allowed to let surface in my writing. Imagine being inside of a box. Your thoughts are refined and you hope for at least one tiny hole to be punched into that box. You want to bring a new perspective and individuality to the box. If you have to be in the box, you want to make the box your own. I expected English 1101 to give me very little creative ability; therefore, I did not look forward to my English 1101 class.
Music is part of most of our everyday lives. Adults and Children value music for entertainment purposes, though many of us may not consider what it has to offer us beyond this use. From very early on, children learn nursery rhymes and explore the world of rhythm using pots and pans and wooden spoons. Many individuals acknowledge the importance of music in our lives for enrichment and culture. Research is beginning to uncover the far reaching benefits of music, not just for enjoyment, but also for the social, linguistic, cultural and even psychological benefits it has to offer.
The first section covers a study about how music reduces the anxiety in patients with coronary heart disease, mechanically ventilated patients, cancer patients, and patients awaiting surgical procedures. Secondly, they found that music is becoming more commonly used as an alternative to anti-anxiety drugs. In addition, they also found a study on how blood pressure is affected by music. results show that music only made small reductions in blood pressure when it was used in hypertensive patients to help guide slow and regular breathing. The next study mentioned, shows that music also helps to reduce pain in patients, because music affects the brain's opioid and oxytocin mechanisms, but similar to blood pressure the results show that it only made small reductions. Furthermore, the authors found more studies that show that music helped to improve sleep quality due to muscle-assisted relaxation; and also found studies that showed that pleasant music can activate the reward system to help treat depression that can lead to cardiovascular
Rachelle, you gave such a good example for cultural preservation. Many cultures believing that listening music can help patients with a wide range of medical problems including sleep disturbances, stroke and coma. When we listening to music our brain and blood vessels are relaxing. It helps to reduce heart rates, anxiety and pain resulting physical chills and pleasure.
Media takes all forms of shapes, from video games to music it influences people daily because we are always surrounded by it. Music especially impacts individuals because in a lot of ways it can say what we want to say in times when we as individuals cannot say it. In those times we lean on music to help us understand the hardship we are going through, or as a mechanism to face our feelings or to block them out. Interpersonal violence which is defined as an individual using power over another in the form of violence whether that be emotional, physical, or sexual. With the many forms of interpersonal violence it’s apparent that it has been expressed in the form of music for quite a while, and sometimes not always in a preventative way. By
