I began this course with goals to significantly improve my writing. I knew there were challenges for me to overcome, because I have not written much at all since high school, which has been more than twenty four years ago. Nonetheless, I was up for the challenge and each week I made sure to do exactly as instructed in the weekly syllabus, reading each every assignment very carefully. At first I felt overwhelmed, but as I completed the homework and discussion post assignments for the weeks prior to the major papers, the overwhelming feelings subsided and I concentrated on each task at hand.
The homework and class work did not come easy for me, but completing the reading assignments really helped me to understand what I needed to accomplish. I made sure to be engaged in the discussion board posts, so that I would be able to obtain feedback from others. Keeping up with the writing assignments was a major priority for me as well, because I was hopeful to find out which areas I would really need to focus on to be able to do a good job on major papers. Likewise, peer revisions proved to be a great way to seek input for improvement, I made sure to participate in each one, and it paid off. The discussion board posts, the writing assignments, and the peer revisions all helped me to do a good job on all

I really needed to slow down and do a better job with my prewriting, especially my drafts and outlines. I needed to focus on multiple drafts, and revising my drafts to make them better. Therefore, I made sure to leave myself plenty of time to write and re-write my drafts, and make good complete outlines. I would even re-write those if needed. I think making those changes going forward, are what helped me improve on my future papers. There were many other tools that helped also, but focusing on re-writing drafts and outlines, basically experimenting, was a huge benefit for
What has helped me the most this semester is working on the papers in class so I can get feedback from the professor. Revisions for papers has also helped me a lot. I found it very beneficial rewriting papers after I was given feedback for what I did wrong. One thing that I like most about this class is that it is encouraged to rewrite papers
To effectively revise and edit my research paper, I read it carefully, as I played the reader`s role instead of that of a writer. In addition, I used a number of strategies to effectively revise and edit my research paper. First, I read my paper aloud as I listened for errors. After carefully listening, I was able to identify and correct errors in my writing, including grammar, incorrect sentence structure, incomplete ideas, and incorrect punctuation. While reading, I could stop and rectify the mistake at the point where I could note it. In addition, I read each sentence at a time so that I could digest the structure and identify any error. Prior to the reading, I noted down the common errors I usually commit while writing such as the omission
At the beginning of this course, I was convinced that success would come relatively easy. I had imagined there being few assignments with the guidelines for papers and assignments being broad. I soon came to the realization that I would have my compositional skills pushed to the limit. Although I entered the course with a adequate level of competency in writing, I significantly had my knowledge and skills in academic writing expanded as showcased in the progression of my assignments. I have learned proper procedure for MLA formatting, as well as proper rhetorical analysis, as opposed to synopsis. My writing has become more refined as well as focused. I am better able to concentrate on proper analysis, so while this is my biggest area of improvement,
When I started the class, I believed my level of writing was at a strong point, however, as the class progressed I found out how wrong I was. I learned that I needed to work on two certain things to succeed in the class. The objectives that I have always seemed to struggle in is correcting my sentences from becoming fragmented and knowing how to successfully structure them and learning to use citation throughout my papers. Knowing to successfully apply these, I believe has made me a better writer than what I started as.
My last class was not a good writing experience; therefore I was hesitant to fully embrace this session’s writing course. Because I do not believe in expectations, my goals were based on previous writing experiences. This helped to support what writing confidence I had left to give this course a chance to be different. In English106, my desire was to improve my writing skills, find weaknesses in my writing, and be a better writer at the end of the course.
After taking this course, I look back at the writer that I was at the beginning of the course compared to the end. I have changed significantly as a writer. I am able to look at different writing assignments and determine that each assignment is unique. Meaning, not all writing assignments can be composed or formatted the same. I have instilled in myself that you do not have to write the way the textbook teaches. The freedom to write in your own fashion and still successfully complete the assignment makes someone a good writer and produces good writing.
At the end of this course, I feel that a lot has improved with my writing. When I first started this course, I was struggling with a lot of writing mechanisms. One of the things was transition. I was just writing without thinking of how to connect my thoughts. After completing numerous writing assignments, I am fully confident with my ability to have a paper that flows. Another thing that I struggled with was organization. Although I still have a lot of improvement to make, I think this aspect of my writing has improved. One of the things that helped me immensely was creating an outline before writing my paper. Another aspect of my writing that also improved has to do with run-on sentences. I see a lot of changes in my writing and writing run-on
My writing has improved through this class because I write more professionally and resourcefully, learned about citations, and write longer papers easier. I have learned to make every sentence have valuable information within it. This has made my papers more enjoyable to read and have a purpose for writing them. I have also learned how to create correct citations. This will be useful throughout all of college because it is crucial to give credit to the rightful owner. Lastly, my papers have become easier to write more. While writing about topics I enjoy I research more and want to write more about them. Consequently, by combining all three of these things I have learned to write longer, more efficient essays that give proper credit. I have
This course was a huge leap from what I learned in high school. One of the main differences was the types of papers I wrote. In high school, most of the papers I wrote were creative or written in first person. In college, all of the papers were analytical, structured, and in third person. Another big difference is the types of sources I used. Previously I was able to use simple, trusted websites as sources, but now I am using scholarly sources like the databases provided by Loras. My high school papers were also about three pages at max, while all of my college papers are at least three pages. Overall, I think my high school should have done a better job at preparing me for college writing. Some ways in which they could have accomplished this is by giving the students more critical research papers and making us analyse text more thoroughly. Although there was some difficulty transitioning to college writing, I didn’t have too much of a problem adapting.

This course has been an awakening to me in terms of writing. I always thought that my writing was average, but when compared to others during peer editing, it is easy to see the gap. Many of my fellow classmates are around me, use a moderate amount of advanced vocabulary and have a decent style. Of course, there are the outliers; those above and below. This course has allowed me to see the writing of those above me, and it does motivate me to get to the standard that they are at. For one, my vocabulary is not where theirs are. I understand most words used, but when it comes to me writing my own paper, I often find myself using the same words over and over again. Nothing is unique or different, it is all the same being repetitive and boring.
Overall, I am enjoying the relaxing atmosphere in this class. When I entered this class, my writing was too unorganized and have many grammar problems, but I am happy to point out my mistakes, in order to improve this aspect of my writing. And the reading of this course gave me something to think about my own life, how I should engage in oral conversations with others and how to shape my thoughts and opinions. This course is a very helpful experience to improve writing skills, and I also learned some valuable tools, based on what we did read, how to form my opinion in the future.
When I first signed up for the class last year, I was expecting an extremely hard class dedicated to solely writing essays. In a sense, I was not wrong in that it was hard class and most of the assignments included writing. At that time, I had little confidence in my writing abilities. I dreaded every moment I had to spend on writing assignments. Even though I hated writing, I decided to challenge myself to take the class to improve my writing capabilities. At the
The first weeks of class were easy to me because I enjoy reading and writing my thoughts down. So the handouts such as “group minds”, and “once more to the lake” were really intriguing to me. I feel that the class became hard for me when essays started rolling into the schedule. I was terrified about writing my first college paper because I never wrote papers in my high school English class so I was not sure about how good I wrote. I remember the first essay being a descriptive essay. I had no clue what I was doing or where to start, but that did not stop me from doing it because it was a challenge that appealed to my mind. I read the paper over 10 times just to make sure it was just right, and turned it in. When it was returned I was in shock about my grade because I did really well. Yet, there is always room for improvement.
In this class, Creative Writing, we learned twelve different rules for writing. I felt that each rule, except for two, were important and could help, not only with writing, but in school, work, and life. We had writing projects due weekly and, in class, we traded papers so we could edited each others work.We also made a Google Docs and collaboratively wrote stories in groups of three to five people. My group is writing a murder mystery on a cruise ship. With this project I learned more about what it is like to work in a group. We haven’t had any issues but it’s interesting how the vision you have for your character changes when other people write your character into their section. Most of the twelve rules for writing helped improve each assignment and any writing I will be doing in the future.
