The first is the pastorally applied censure of the counselor upon the counselee, attempting to reform and restructure damaging and dangerous areas of life that have been colonized by sinful thought patterns and wrong habits. The second is the “self-discipline” of practitioners, who, after fallowing the nouthetic counseling method, learn how to handle life problems biblical, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and with their own motivation - what the Scripture calls “maturity” in the faith. Regarding doctrine, Adams says that exposing clients to biblical teaching provides them with practical implications for living.
