Personal Narrative: A Career In Border Patrol

In 1924, the U.S. Border Patrol started its service for our nation. Although changes have affected nearly every aspect of its operations from its earliest days, the values; professionalism, honor, integrity, respect for human life, and a shared effort, helped shape the Border Patrol from the early years and they still remain the same today.

The Border Patrol has existed in the United States since 1924, working to keep our country a safer place. There were some methods of Border Patrol that existed before 1924 but they were not professional or continuous. “Mounted watchmen of the U.S. Immigration Service patrolled the border in an effort to prevent illegal crossings as early as 1904, but their efforts were irregular and undertaken only when resources permitted” (Border, 2015). The Border Patrol and their agents border the boundaries of America so we can be safe in our homes. The United States Border Patrol is a federal law enforcement agency and is one of the largest in the world. The purpose of the Border Patrol is to keep terrorists and the weapons terrorists use out of the nation’s borders. In addition, the Border Patrol also serves to ensure that international and trade is conducted in a lawful way (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2014). As a federal agency, the Border Patrol is under high public scrutiny. A federal agent that is accused of unethical behavior will be in the national spotlight, and it will discredit the entire agency, no matter how isolated the incident may have been. United States Border Patrol has been around since 1904 enforcing and regulating laws under the immigration and Nationality Act. U.S. border patrol is now under the Department of Homeland Security, which was created as a response to the attacks of September 11, 2001. Over the years, their jurisdiction and missions have changed to better protect the safety of nation. Although border patrol is a need for any nation, their extensive acceptations to constitutional laws can often be taken advantage of. The mission of the U.S. border patrol should be to prevent illegal aliens, which are a threat to American society, from reaching their purpose. Frequently, their purpose can be confused or executed in a bias manner.

The Border Patrol became more effective as the duties continued to be executed over the years and much of its efforts as seen during the war years (Wallechinsky, n.d.). It expanded more after the Immigration Service was shifted to the Department of Justice from the Department of Labor in 1940. The number of officers in Border Patrol rose to 1531 and after World War II, more personnel joined the force (U.S. Customs and Border Protection, n.d). The Border Patrol’s effectiveness during the war was seen in its ability to manage detention camps, to exercise strong control at the border, to assist U.S.

Border security it’s been a problem as early as 1904. Since the inception of the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) in 1924, enormous changes have affected almost every aspect of its operation, thus, their main mission remain the same “To Protect our Borders”. Despite a big increase on the amount of money, manpower, and new strategies the security of our country by the U.S. Border Patrol has proven to be a difficult task. Weakness in our borders allows terrorist and smugglers, as well as thousands of illegal immigrants, easy entrance to the United States. New strong immigration laws are in dire need of changing, as well as stricter punishments and fines for all immigrants caught crossing our borders illegally.

The Border Patrol were military men. The Border Patrol agents are "plain-spoken and politically incorrect" officers who police the borders, and that they are deeply affected by the suffering of the immigrants. The agents feel that the worse deaths are those of women and children, of young pregnant mothers, and nursing mothers with babies still attached to their breasts. However, the agents are most angry with coyotes who betray their human trust and abandon their charges to the merciless desert and to certain death. Urrea relates to us that agents who have worked at least ten years in the border world are able to provide the most accurate picture of the border crisis. These courses sparked my interest and showed me a way that I could help children on a larger scale: through the criminal justice system. Two years later I began my first year of college at the University of New Haven. The education I received during my undergrad was highly valuable and irreplaceable. I spent the first two years of my undergrad as a criminal justice major with a concentration in forensic psychology.

There are, for example, some very specialized jobs, such as: K9 Units, Mounted Patrol, Bike Patrol, Sign-cutting (or otherwise known as tracking), Snowmobile Units, Infrared Scope Units, Intelligence, Anti-smuggling Investigations Unit, Border Criminal Alien Program, Multi-agency Anti-Gang Task Force, and Mobile Surveillance Unit. During the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Border Patrol and other federal agencies merged were called into a new U.S. Agency Customs and Border Protection.
