In my development plan, I will first discuss my strengths and my growth areas. The feedback I have received from others is that I treat others with respect. I do not talk down to others but treat them as equals. Something else people tell me is that I work hard. Once I understand a task, I learn to get better at it. From there I produce a quality output. My growth areas consist of networking, communication, attention to details, listening, and relationship management. I know the basics of these growth areas but I can stand to get better. With this development plan and continuous practice I will be an expert in these areas.
Short-Term Plan It is important to use resources and seek help from others in order to become a great leader. That’s why, In my short-term plan, I plan to read more books in addition to the one I read for class, Primal Leadership. Healthcare magazines provide leadership articles I can read to stay current on how to function as a leader in today’s healthcare industry. In my plan I will read the books How to Win Friends and Influence People, Servant Leadership, What to Ask the Person in the Mirror, Leadership and Self-Deception, and Emotional Intelligence 2.0. I will begin to use the tools I learned in the Leadership course such as balancing supportive and directive behavior. I will also, add the tools that will be learned from the books above, to this plan. Furthermore, I will pursue finding a mentor to help ensure I am on the right path.
This semester, we learned specific ways to build our leadership capabilities by reading “How Remarkable Women Lead” by Joanna Barsh and Susie Cranston, researching Boston women leaders, interviewing a present day woman leader, and reading a group book. Throughout all of these resources and research, common themes of how to be a successful leader emerged. Not only did I learn more about leadership in general, but I also found ways to improve my own leadership without going too much out of my comfort zone. The important lessons of leading with perseverance, framing, and an activist's mindset thoroughly influenced my identity as a leader and gave me new tactics to grow as a person.
There are two kinds of people in this world, followers and leaders. Followers are the people that never take a leadership role in any activity. "They are more valued by followers and have higher performing teams." (Cherry 2014) However, leaders are the ones that use their leadership skills to make a difference in this world, such as presidents, teachers, or even college graduates. Leadership is not something you can learn from a book, but you have to gain this skill through experiences such as holding an office, organizing an event, speaking in front of people, or participating in a leadership program.
I believe that education; preparation and planning are keys to success. My vision is to apply those principles to my work ethic and applies my knowledge and skills to my professional performance. Therefore, better my workplace delivering excellence in results and stand out as a leader. I strongly believe that the most important part of a business is its people, and example is the best way to express an effective organizational culture.

Throughout this entire course we have learned many concepts and strategies to synthesize and use leadership as a means of working in a group setting. These concepts allowed us to learn not only how to lead other
I chose this book by John Wooden in hopes to better my efforts in terms of everyday leadership in any environment I’m put in. I feel as if I am a leader myself already as I’ve had experience in terms of playing on multiple competitive softball, baseball and ice hockey teams. I’ve also seen my leadership abilities prove themselves in every work condition I’ve been a part of and every job. I work diligently and effortlessly and hope to lead by example. I chose this book to better improve these skills I already posses and help myself become more knowledgeable on the subject.
Over the course of this semester, I have learned about the theoretical foundation of leadership and management. From various leadership styles to numerous learning tools have all aided in shaping me to become an effective leader not only in the health care profession, but everyday life as well. Through utilizing these tools, I have managed to put them into actions through working individually and in teams which has helped me to learn more about myself and the type of leader I am. Throughout this action plan I will reflect on my definition of leadership, what I’ve learned about myself in the capacity to demonstrate leadership, my leadership strengths and weaknesses and three action steps that will help me to develop my leadership in the future.
Growth (Describe the key competencies and performance factors you have developed, especially in the past year, to make yourself a more valuable and versatile member of the organization. How have you grown or what have you contributed towards the company’s growth.)
The second area, I will be focusing on will be to ask more often for feedback from others around me on how my actions are affecting the performance of others. This Leadership Practice is found under Model the Way. This feedback will make sure that how I perceive things is in fact how others feel as well. Ensuring the values that I hold are in alignment with the organization is key to success of the team that I lead. Getting this feedback will allow me to ensure that I am still in line with this. This feedback, will also ensure that my leadership philosophy is being understood and if it is not being perceived clearly by others, this will be the information I will need to make those corrections so that I myself can lead others more
One of the biggest lessons learned from this course is that to be an effective leader, you must have a diverse skillset. I’m not sure if there is any one magical component or characteristic in being a great leader. One influence during my review of the literature was that; although easier for some, I see leadership as something we must continually improve upon. This is in contrast to my belief during my first day of class, when I thought leaders just
“Leaders in health care should be upfront and leading by example to demonstrate their leadership abilities and assist with health care duties and responsibilities. A good leader says let’s go and gets things done instead of waiting for others to get them done. He must be in the front line seeing patients and managing the health care duties that makes their health care practices successful. An efficient leader must understand every-ones roles and responsibilities in order to appreciate what everyone does in the practice. Appreciating what each employee does for the practice is key to
I believe that developing leadership skills is not a rapid process, but it is a daily process. The best place people learn how to lead is from their daily experiences. Therefore, my job experience helped me to be more familiar with this topic and I gained additional worthy information from the class materials and lessons. Writing a biography was an amazing experience that helped me to look back in my life, review it in details, know what I did in the past and discover myself better. I did many of the book’s assessments and exercises and I found them totally thought-provoking and useful materials. They assisted me to think more about my leadership potentials and skills. Doing the exercises made me more aware of my strengths and weaknesses in the area of leadership. I read in the book about 10 qualities that mark a leader and help influence the leadership process. Those qualities listed as: vision,
I felt that You Don’t Need A Title To Be A Leader by Mark Sanborn was an excellent book. Not only was it easy to read and hard to put down, but it also had many valuable lessons on leadership. The principles of leadership were simple to understand and apply.
The sum of education, experiences, and observations lays a foundation upon which I will grow to become a good leader. In this plan, I will focused on those aspects of leadership that I believe are most required for personal development as well as those which will be so significant for my future leadership career. I have identified three goals which will guide me in the development process. My goals are to develop my integrity, listening skills and communications skills. I assume that this plan will change and be altered as required by life circumstances.
A personal development plan helps an individual in identifying his potential and capabilities which he can utilize to achieve his future aims (Business Ball 2013). It
