In Survey I, 91.9% of the participants reported that they have cheated on at least one homework assignment; however, when asked why they receive answers, 13.5% of the participants stated that they do not receive answers (Appendix D). Therefore, it can be concluded that some students believe that cheating on homework assignments is not considered as immoral. This may further explain why students cheat.
Furthermore, 91.9% of students reported cheating at least once, albeit 51.4% of students stating that it's bothersome when others cheat (Appendix D). This is due to self-serving bias, which is when people blame other individuals when their action negatively affects them, while they blame the situation when their act negatively affects others (Boyes, 2013). For example, if someone gets into a car accident, one automatically assumes that person is a bad driver, while if one gets into a car accident himself, one will find excuses and say it was not their own fault. Similarly, when a student cheats in high school, they find reasons to justify that action, even when they know it is wrong, which is the case with 62.2% of students in this survey (Appendix D). However, when another student cheats in the same class, it is bothersome to some students because they see it as unfair and disrespectful on the student’s part.

Cheating has always been an issue among students. Almost everyone cheats in some fashion in classes. Whether it’s by blatantly copying another student’s answers, or working together on an assignment meant to be done on your own, cheating will remain a staple occurrence in academic life. In Rebekah Nathan’s article, “The Art of College Management: Cheating,” Nathan (2005) delves into students’ various reasons for cheating and even includes cheating as an “aspect[] of student culture,” (p. 27) from the point of view of a student. Nathan defends cheating as a whole by including it as an inevitable part of student culture. Additionally, she claims that everyone cheats, further diving into the idea that cheating is not inherently wrong. As a result of consistently defending cheating, Nathan neglects to provide worthy solutions to the issue as well as ignoring the consequences of cheating.
What reasons does Wenke suggest for the increase in cheating among students? Wenke suggests that the increase in cheating is moral decline. She that schools need to assume the responsibility of teaching kids about what are good morals, the difference of good and bad. She also express her most important reason is that students are too busy to get done the little things that need get done such as homework. These students are college bound students. Students that are trying to juggle too many activities. Restoring to compromising their integrity for a good grade.
Cheating used to be considered an unmentionable sin. However, in this day and age, it has become more common and somewhat of a daily occurrence. Cheating is more widespread today than in the past. A poll conducted by a website, CollegeHumor, revealed that 60 percent of college students had admitted to cheating on tests and assignments. Due to its popularity, society has began to accept cheating as an average tool used by students to succeed. Accepting the issue of cheating has not only decreased society’s standards, but also has led them to become less ethical. Thus, as a result of the decrease in standards, academic cheating has become a reaccuring problem that is now being accepted by society.
In Mari Pearlman’s L.A. Times article, “ Cheating In School Reflects Basic Confusion in Society” (1999), she discusses cheating and its effect on students, both, while in school and later in life. Cheating has been around for a long time and now cheating’s grip on students is worsening. With the more often occurrence of cheating in schools, schools need to put their foot down and put a stop to cheating in order to lower the occurrence of cheating in the future. However, there are some that say cheating is not common anymore and is rarely spotted.

A third reason leading to the increase in academic dishonesty is the pure and simple fact that once a student cheats on a paper or any type of homework assignment and does not get caught and reprimanded for their actions, the more that student believes that they can keep doing it without getting caught. The more and more that a student cheats and gets away with it the more the student feels that they are invisible and can continue doing it. This is a sad occasion when this happens because the student is only hurting themselves. They are not hurting their parents or their teachers because they are not the ones that are going to be getting a job from this education it is the student that is hurting the students.
Cheating has become a major problem here in the United States. It seems teachers have not figured out a way to prevent students from cheating. Academic dishonesty is a virus that has spread around the entire campus. Cheating cannot be fixed by school officials because it is too large to eradicate, and because there is no way for teachers or anyone to stop students from having the desire to cheat.
It’s obvious that students are bored in the classroom. Typical teenagers talk nonstop about wanting to be in bed, to go home, or to just be eating food. The lack of stimulation in an educational environment is a key factor to the laziness and irresponsibility found in students who cheat. But it’s for a multitude of reasons that cheating is becoming an increasing issue in the lives of students across the nation.
Schools today have a very large problem with academic dishonesty. Not only high schools, but also colleges as well have and abundance of students who cheat regularly. Although cheating is addressed in many school policies, a shocking number of students get away with it, and teachers do nothing about it. Whether its copying someone’s assignment to get theirs done, or plagiarizing an entire paper, students cheat.
We as students often use the misconception of cheating to take us into a higher level of authority, to succeed in school, or to get into a good college. Fairly enough we know that cheating can be beneficial to us, but there are consequences that come with this unjustifiable process. Is it used for survival for your own good? Cheating has come a long way, and it is been a long way into becoming a habit formed by society. It can be stopped, but it is our decision to make that choice.
