That is a true statement there are negatives and positives when working in a small or large group. I understand the idea behind having a small group as oppose to one person making all the decisions. As you mentioned in your example you feel a sense of obligation when you're working on a team project and you don’t want to be the one that let everyone down I can relate to this as well. On my own, I can fail to do something and I feel bad for not completing whatever is I am supposed to do. On the other hand, I would feel worse it was a group project because I let others down and it would hurt my confidence because they would not trust me.
Initially, I had a negative view on group working because of the challenges that I had. When I was in high school, my five other friends and I used to work together in a music competition. Although we were supposed to get together to practice
To add on to what Rachel said, groupthink can also occur if the leader is well respected or persuasive. It does have it pros and cons. If used properly the group can come to a solution with everyone contributing. It gives everyone of a sense if worth because they contributed. A con can be peer pressure as when everyone agrees on one solution. This leads mental inefficiency and decrease in moral judgement. As some patients may just go with everyone says in order to avoid conflict. If you want to avoid groupthink then you can have an outsider come in and question the views of the members or or assign the role of critical evaluator to each member of the group.
Many teachers assign group projects. Sometimes, however, an uncooperative member can affect the entire group. I think we should still work in groups because they help some people get better grades, it helps with communication skills, and it keeps they students from being bored in the class.
Debra, Groupthink is the practice of approaching problems or issues as matters that are best dealt with by consensus of a group rather than by individuals acting independently; conformity. It lacks individual creativity, or of a sense of personal responsibility, that is sometimes characteristic of group interaction. Groupthink has its’ pro and con depending on the goal being pursued. My experience has been as you describe; some people tend not to speak their opinion due to fear of not being heard. Benefits of self-managed teams: Individual team members may have the opportunity to use their skills and experience outside their specified remit (or job title) within an organization.
Wither if someone is a child, student or an adult they have been put into small groups at one point in their lives. For most students, like myself, it is for group projects or classroom activities. DeVito defines a small group as,” a collection of individuals who are connected to one another by some common purpose, are interdependent, have some degree of organization among them, and see themselves as a group (pg. 211).” Being a part of a small group involves a great amount of communication to make it successful.
Working in study groups can be beneficial, however, as much as it can help a person it can also be counterproductive. An example of a problem that can occur in study groups is the members having different opinions when writing a paper.
In many professions, it is better to solve problems by working as a group of people versus an independent approach. As a group, each individual works to achieve what he/she is specifically trained in and come together as one to share thoughts and opinions. The healthcare industry is one that does not function with the skills and thoughts of just one individual. Many people are responsible for one patient and the outcome; this is called inter-professional collaboration. Henneman et al. (1995) stated that “collaboration involves a partnership characterized by mutual goals and commitments in which participants willingly become involved in planning and decision making” (Alberto, 2009, para. 6). In order to have effective teamwork, many key components are necessary within the collaboration. A few examples include: respect for others, confidence in own knowledge, willingness to learn & negotiate, belief in a common purpose, tolerance of differing opinions, and not being threatened by conflict (Black, 2014, p. 190).
It is this small group’s belief that we are a well-rounded group. A group comprised of people with the exact same qualities will not be as productive or successful as a diversified group, and might run into more problems completing projects. We feel that because we, as a group, have strengths in all four themes of Strengths finder 2.0 that we have the potential to work well together because we all have different strengths to bring to the table. Rath and Conchie (2008) are of the opinion that teams are stronger and united when members of the team have strength in all four domains.
However, in my opinion working in groups also has some disadvantages because we all are from different
I think it is important to learn about small groups because there are many advantages to a small group. A diverse small group made up of people with individual strengths, backgrounds, and interests can help an organization use the potential at their fingertips (Tubbs, p.9) In many areas throughout our society we can see that working with a team is necessary. According to Tubbs (2012) it is projected that companies will continue to increase the use of small groups (p. 6).
This issue can delay group decisions, and they become less effective. In an individual approach, timing is not a problem. A single leader is responsible for the decision without depend in anybody else. In some cases the group have a strong personality leader who dominates the group, for some members of the group, this can create discomfort and stress in the environment which groupthink may occur. Another major disadvantages for group approach could be diffusion of responsibilities, since everyone on the group is responsible for the decision making, a wrong decision can create a lack of accountability, and blame some else for wrong decisions.
There are many things to consider when talking about working within a group. One of the major things is conflicts between the group’s members. People will always have conflicts among themselves and with others; it is just a way of life. One of the conflicts that occur within a group is Lack of Leadership, someone needs to be in charge and keep everyone else pointed in the right direction. Another conflict among groups is Group Roles; everyone needs to know where they fit into the puzzle and what is expected of them. Also everyone needs to have coinciding Schedules, that way you know the work is getting done. All of theses problems add up to one of the biggest issues in
Hello Dr. Harris, and classmates’ actions that can be considered active participants in the classroom can be grouped strategies small-group work has many advantages; this is an opportunity for students to participate in active learning. Students who are struggling or need explanations can get feedback from their classmates or teacher faster. Furthermore, students who participate and do the explaining can strengthen their own understanding as well as learn actively. Furthermore, a group discussion will allow students an opportunity to talk and discuss their beliefs and opinions about the material being taught. Yes, active, participating means all collaborative, physical, and progressive because much information is separated into group learning and students have to use their minds to critically think and problem solves as well as learns.
I am Zeeshan Ali; I am working as a Computer teacher for Classes VI-X-M in Canal Side Boys Campus. I have done Masters in Computer Science (MCS) from Punjab University College of Information and Technology (PUCIT) Lahore. The students are the main focus of every teacher and our entire teaching efforts circle round our students to achieve the set targets. Effective Teaching includes many useful teaching strategies that a teacher chooses according to the requirement of his/her respective subject and topic as well. In result of my years of experience and as a Computer teacher I find Group Work as the most effective and fruitful technique at every level.
Working in a group setting can cause strain on some individuals, but it also can be helpful to the same individual. Group projects are a major component to both negative and positive effects. There are then easy and hard components of working in a group setting, that can range from person to person. The easiest part of working in a group project was commitment, trust, and motivation. In our group everyone was committed toward getting a great grade and wanting to work for that. Group projects usually tend to have people rely on others to do the work. For this project, for example, I believe my group did not have that issue. We all worked together, splitting parts up for the presentation, including the PowerPoint, annotated bibliography, and
